Ferment - Catherine Wheel

Ferment
Released on 22/03/10. Their epic debut single for Font Black Metallic brought them attention and praise from the press and fans alike. It also became their biggest hit in the States making the top ten in the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and is still name checked now as indie classic of the early 90's. The band followed this with two more singles, Balloon and I Want To Touch You before releasing their debut album Ferment in mid-1992. The album was produced by Talk Talk's Tim Friese-Greene who continued to produce and help them before they split in 2000. This long overdue and welcome reissue includes newly written sleeve notes by journalist and early champion of the band, Jack Rabid from Big Takeover magazine and 6 additional bonus tracks chosen by the band. These being the limited edition 2,000 only pressing of the 30 Century Man E.P., the non-album single Balloon and live fan favourite Intravenous which fans have been trying to get hold of for years. The band went on to release four more albums before calling it a day. Rob Dickinson has since released a solo album for Universal, Fresh Wine For The Horse, while Neil Sims and Brian Futter went on to form 50ft Monster.

More Songs About Love & Hate
I think possibly we’ve got higher standards than most groups. If you can t add two or three new songs to the set every month, then it s not worth carrying on. Peter Coyne, NME 1987 When people reminisce now on Brand 80s, they are presented with a glitzy, money-pumped Club Tropicana. Well, think again. The Godfathers, who were indeed signed to the same label, Epic, as Club Tropicana author George Michael himself, presented hard, crunching, socially-conscious pop with a fierce R&B/mod sensibility. Their three albums for Epic, Birth, School, Work, Death, More Songs About Love and Hate and Unreal World, all offered a powerful antidote to the puffed-up importance of the music scene.

By the time the Godfathers released More Songs About Love and Hate, they were making waves in America while still seeking chart action back in their home country. They had become the name to drop. Formed from the ashes of the Sid Presley Experience in 1985, the band brothers vocalist Peter and bassist Chris Coyne, guitarists Kris Dollimore and Mike Gibson and drummer George Mazur, had enjoyed considerable success with the compilation of their indie hits, Hit By Hit (on their Corporate Image label) and their first Epic album More Songs About Love & Hate was released on 9 May 1989. The cover of the album had a stunning drawing of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on it that had to be withdrawn for the American market, amidst fears that the actress would sue. Peter Coyne explained: It wasn’t meant to denigrate Elizabeth Taylor or Richard Burton’s memory.

Birth, School, Work, Death
Released in February 1988, Birth, School, Work, Death jarred with both the indie movement which was obsessed with getting over the demise of the Smiths and the Housemartins, and the mainstream pop charts.

A tie-in gig at London s Town And Country Club in Kentish Town on Valentine sNight 1988 marked The Godfathers step into the big time. The album made No. 80 on the UK albums chart, where it remained for two weeks. However, in the states, the title track was pushed heavily by college radio, and it became an USTop 40 hit. Birth, School, Work, Death has got to be a bit of a high point, cause that took off instantly all over the world and it s turned into a little franchise of its own really, Peter Coyne was to say later.

Pop Said
The Darling Buds were part of a strange indie phenomena in the late 1980’s – guitar bands with blonde female lead singers (along with The Primitives & Transvision Vamp).
Originally from South Wales, the band released one self-financed single and were picked up by indie label Native. After two further singles they were signed by Sony imprint Epic and in the January 1989 released their debut long-player "Pop Said” which reached No 23 in the National album charts.
The album contains the four hit singles ‘Let’s Go Round There’, ‘Burst’, ‘Hit The Ground’ and ‘You’ve Got To Choose’.
Now reissued and fully expanded by nine tracks to include all of the B-sides from the singles. The accompanying booklet includes thoughts from the band today looking back at the release, alongside sleeve images and effects from their personal archive.

Sue
At long last, the debut Frazier Chorus album, ‘Sue’, returns. Frazier Chorus hailed from Brighton and consisted of Tim Freeman, Michelle Allardyce, Kate Holmes and Chris Taplin (Holmes is now one half of electro/pop outfit Client along with ex-Dubstar singer Sarah Blackwood). Their finest hour, ‘Sue’ is now expanded with all of the accompanying b-sides from the singles ‘Sloppy Heart’, ‘Dream Kitchen’ and ‘Typical!’ The release also includes their unique take on the Sex Pistols anthem ‘Anarchy In The UK’, along with ‘Spoonhead’, which is available for the first time on CD, plus extended mixes of ‘Dream Kitchen’, ‘Typical!’ and ‘Forty Winks’. The accompanying booklet includes lyrics to all of the songs, along with new liner notes from singer/songwriter Tim Freeman. Freeman is the brother of acclaimed comedy actor Martin Freeman, whose character Tim in The Office was based on his sibling… a fact of which he is actually quite proud!

Press:-

"With his articulate, witty lyrics-delivered in a mannered whisper and full of rainy days, cups of tea and Little Chefs-the four-piece refined a carefully orchestrated, colourful contrast to The Smiths’ recent monochrome take on the English condtion.”

Postcard C.V.
Released on 24/05/10. A reissue of Senseless Things' seminal and debut album Postcard C.V. This 17 track CD, features the ten original tracks of the album plus seven bonus tracks. Originally released in November 1989 on Way Cool Records, a music hack noted "As hectic and reckless as one of their insomnia-defying tours, Senseless Things' debut album vibrates with almost insane enthusiasm." Senseless Things hail from South West London, who via a performance at the now demolished Clarendon in Hammersmith, an appearance on a 7" giveaway by Sniffin' Rock fanzine and two John Peel sessions found themselves recording 3 albums on Epic Records. The band's initial speedy modern punk was to give way to more varied and thoughtful (with an edge) material. Our Price: £9.95
