A Fifth Of Beethoven: Expanded Edition - Walter Murphy Band

A Fifth Of Beethoven: Expanded Edition
•    WALTER MURPHY was born in 1952 in New York City and by the age of 4 attended music lessons held by renowned theatre and motion picture organist, Rosa Rio. In 1970 he enrolled in the Manhattan School Of Music where he wrote for the institutes Jazz ensemble.

•    In 1972 after a friend introduced Walter to Doc Severinsen, the musical director of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, he presented him with some of his arrangements and Severinsen liked them so much he had The Tonight Show Band play them live. Unfortunately with the relocation of The Tonight Show production to California, that connection was lost and so Murphy spent the next two years writing jingles for advertisements and the popular TV show Big Blue Marble.

•    While writing a disco song for a commercial in 1974 the producer gave him an idea to update classical music and WALTER MURPHY made a demo tape which caught the ear of Private Stock Records owner Larry Uttal who was particularly interested in his rendition of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 In C Minor.

•    Originally released under the name of WALTER MURPHY & THE BIG APPLE BAND the song became a smash hit reaching #1 on the Hot 100 chart after climbing for 19 weeks. Following the singles success A FIFTH OF BEETHOVEN was released on an album of the same name and also included a notable rendition of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight Of The Bumblebee entitled FLIGHT 76 peaking at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100.

•    HOT SHOT RECORDS is proud to present this lovingly re-mastered, fully expanded edition of WALTER MURPHY & THE BIG APPLE BAND – A FIFTH OF BEETHOVEN. Complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content this remaster is a must have for all Disco, Soul and Funk fans out there!

Teach Me Tonight
Released 16th February 2009. When Blossom Dearie first emerged as a solo artist she was already unique in many ways. Straightaway there was that voice - kittenish, intimate, coquettish and understated where so many other jazz divas were straining to belt out every song. With the fascinating 1957-58 albums Give Him the Ooh-la-la and Once Upon a Summertime Blossom finds a unique, light, refined niche on the pop side of jazz. Ray Brown remains for the 1958 set with Herb Ellis and Jo Jones replaced by Mundell Lowe and Ed Thigpen. Our Price: £9.95

Think it Over (Expanded Edition)
Cissy Houston (born Emily Drinkard) has had a long and varied career as a background vocalist, session singer and solo artist but is probably best known for being the mother of the massively successful R&B star Whitney Houston, and the aunt of both Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick. Houston began her career with the family gospel group The Drinkards before joining forces with The Group in the early 60’s. The Group, which included some time members Doris Troy and Dee Dee Warwick, sang background vocals on a number of soul, pop and rock releases, many of which were on Atlantic Records. Atlantics Jerry Wexler signed the group in their own right where they recorded some great gospel-soul in the late 60’s under the name The Sweet Inspirations.

During her time with The Sweet Inspirations Houston sang back-up vocals for Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, The Drifters, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison (Brown Eyed Girl), The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Elvis Presley (the ’69 Vegas comeback) and her niece Dionne Warwick. Having gone solo in 1969 Houston recorded the original version of "Midnight Train To Georgia” (later a #1 single for Gladys Knight and The Pips) on her only album for Janus Records.

In 1978 Houston released THINK IT OVER, her second LP on Private Stock Records under the guidance of arranger/producer Michael Zager. This album introduced Houston to the Disco world with the title track and lead single "Think It Over”
reaching a respectable #32 on the Billboard R&B charts and #5 on the Disco charts. "Think It Over” is bona-fide dance floor dynamite with its solid beat and shuffling percussive elements that propel the track forward, the beautiful marriage of piano and strings augmented with arresting, uplifting horn refrains, married to Houston’s incredible, gospel infused, soulful and impassioned vocal. The second single "Warning – Danger” is in much the same vain, again the piano, string and horn interplay is oh so satisfying. Other strong tracks are the groover "Somebody Should Have Told Me,” and the bold ballad "After You” which showcases Houston’s vocal dexterity.

BBR is very proud to present CISSY HOUSTON, expertly re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. CISSY HOUSTON is absolutely essential listening for all Soul, Disco and Pop fans out there!

Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition)
THE HUES CORPORATION was a soul trio formed in 1969 in Santa Monica, California by band mates St. Clair Lee, Fleming Williams and Hubert Ann Kelley. Their first break came in 1972 with the Blaxploitation film, Blacula, in which they made a small appearance, in addition to recording three songs for the soundtrack.  It was shortly following this that they were signed to RCA where they released their debut album, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION, now making its international CD debut on BBR!

The Allen Toussaint penned, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION - beautifully arranged by Gene Page at the height of his success with Barry White - was The Hues Corporation's first RCA single. The timely, socially conscious message in the song, with its anthemic quality, was a worthy introduction of The Hues Corporation to the American public, as it peaked at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Keen to illustrate the versatility of their new signing, RCA decided to issue the more light-hearted and pop orientated, MIRACLE MAKER (SWEET SOUL SHAKER) as the bands second single. The song was penned by legendary Brill Building songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and seemed destined to take on the top 40, however, unbeknownst to RCA it was another album cut that was creating a stir in a new bubbling underground scene that was poised to spread across the world from New York City.

Penned by Waldo T. Holmes, ROCK THE BOAT was one of the key tracks selected by underground DJs in New York’s burgeoning early disco scene and when RCA execs learned of this, promotions of the previous single were abandoned, and ROCK THE BOAT was rush released as the albums third single in February of 1974. ROCK THE BOAT rose to an impressive #3 on the R&B charts while doing even better on the Hot 100, becoming the first record of the Disco era to top the charts. Despite the popular success of the singles, the album takes inspiration from some of the best vocal groups of the time including The 5th Dimension and The Undisputed Truth, showcasing the true variation of musical styles contained within

BBR is proud to present this fully expanded edition of THE HUES CORPORATION – FREEDOM FOR THE STALION complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and added bonus content, making this a must have for all R&B, Disco, Funk and Soul fans out there!
