New York In The '70s

Luke Haines

New York in the '70s- May 26th 2014.

A mythic re-imagining of the New York Rock n Roll scene 1972 - 1979.

Scene 1 – A Dorset Chalkhill, Britain 2014.

A gigantic mythical naked man awakens from thousand year kip. Chico, a messenger bird, is speaking in tongues and whispering a poem into the naked dude's chalky ear:

"Oh Little Johnny Jewel

He's so cool

He has no decision

He just trying to sell a vision

Chico (something of a savant, bless) is reciting the lyrics to Television's seismic year zeroin classic Little Johnny Jewel.

"He's just trying to sell a vision,” repeats the messenger bird. With an ancient rumble, the nakeddude stands up to reveal his true height of 180 ft.

"I am Cerne Abbus Giant, and Tom Verlaine is my main man,” bellows the Chalk Giant. "I awaken from Dorset Hills as the seeker. The seeker of Mythic Muthafuckin' Rock n Roll. Show me the way to CBGBs in the 1970s Chico. We will bestride the Atlantic and I'll carry you on my fantastic 36 ft phallus. Climb aboard Chico.”

"Oh my,” says the bird.

Scene 2 – New York City. One year later

The Kaballistic order of OM AKA The Real Dead Boys, comprising of Alan Ginsberg, Jim Carroll, Stiv Baters, Johnny Thunders and Sid Vicious are holding an invocation, on 213 Park Avenue South. The chanting begins at 23.23pm:

Shalom Shalom - David Johanson

Shalom Shalom - John Genzale

Shalom Shalom - Jerry Nolan

Shalom Shalom - Killer Kane

Shalom Shalom - Max's Kansas City

Shalom Shalom - The Mercer Arts Centre

Shalom Shalom - Billy Murcia

Shalom Shalom - Syl Sylvain

On it goes until dawn, Shalom Shalom... Lou Reed... Shalom Shalom... Alan Vega...

What if computers finally began getting more Africa in them? What if folk artists started emerging who sounded more post-modern than Cornelius or Pole? What would Click Folk or Glitch Folk sound like? What would Alan Lomax have said if, in 1965, the Newport Folk Festival had been invaded by boffins and geeks playing modular Moogs? What if you could hear, today, the Country Music of the year 2049? What about the Japanese country music of 2049? What would that sound like? What if electronics had appeared in 18th Century Scotland just at the moment of the Highland Clearances? How many mountains can you fit on a Minidisc? It's what Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack or Gary Numan might have sounded like if they'd jammed their way through the back catalogue of Steeleye Span. It's Shakespeare rendered in Flash 5 by a superlucid hyperactive Japanese geek. It's those prolific medieval songwriters Trad. and Anon. finding the missing link between unicorns and Unix. It's preposterous, provocative and prescient

I Give You My Sunshine
Striding into the spotlight in 1980 with cult movie "Breaking Glass”, award-winning singer-songwriter, Hazel O'Connor immediately became an iconic figure. Her latest album, "I Give You My Sunshine” is an emotional tour de force - her unique voice delivering with renewed passion and fire. The album is a introspective soulful dip into a stunning repertoire of the old, the new and everything in between. The moving title track ‘I Give You My Sunshine’ about the sunshine in her own heart which was all and everything that Hazel could give to her hospice bound dying mother.

Other highlights of the album include very personal new compositions; ‘I Would Rather (Wonderwoman)’, ‘From The Very First Hello’, ‘Rebecca’ about a close friend who died from cancer in her thirties and ‘Cinderella Moment’ - a song about enjoying the company of friends and watching the clock strike midnight and wondering whether to go home.

Two songs are from the Nina Simone songbook, ‘Feeling Good’ and ‘Do What You Gotta Do’ and there are stunning new jazz-blues inspired versions of songs from Hazel's own back catalogue ‘Decadent Days’ and ‘That's Life’ the latter with the verses emotively sung in French. ‘In These Shoes’ is Hazel's take on a song originally written by the much missed Kirsty MacColl whom Hazel remembers with fondness.

Accompanied by virtuoso saxophonist Clare Hirst (The Belle Stars, Communards, David Bowie) and the stunning Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics, Sax in the City) on keyboards, this powerful blend of voices and musicianship brings a classy touch of cabaret style energy to Hazel's vibrant performance. The trio will be performing across the country as ‘Bluja’ on a forthcoming tour to promote the new album.

"Her latest work is one of those moments of differentiation: a jazz-blues collection of covers and revisits in the company of keyboardist Sarah Fisher and The Belle Stars’ saxophonist Clare Hirst. They make a most sophisticated and sensitive trio.”

Record Collector Christmas 2011 / Ian Abrahams

"Her latest album showcases a mellower sound drawing on jazz and blues influences. Hazel’s voice has softened with time, and she is perfectly complimented by Claire Hirst on saxophone and Sarah Fisher on keyboards.”

Nimbus, The Vertigo Years Anthology 2CD

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a 2CD ANTHOLOGY by the classic Scottish Progressive Rock group BEGGARS OPERA. Drawing on material from the band’s first four albums, recorded for the legendary Vertigo label, "NIMBUS” features 27 of the band’s best tracks.
Formed in Glasgow in 1969 with a line-up of RICKY GARDINER (Guitar, Vocals), ALAN PARK (Keyboards), MARTIN GRIFFITHS (Vocals), MARSHALL ERSKINE (Bass, Flute) and RAYMOND WILSON (Drums), the band signed to the newly established progressive arm of Philips Records, Vertigo, in 1970. Their debut album, "ACT ONE” gained some success in Europe with tracks such as ‘Poet and Peasant’ and ‘Passacagalia’. A successful European hit single, ‘SARABANDE’, was followed by the album "WATERS OF CHANGE”, arguably their best and most successful album, and a line-up change that saw GORDON SELLAR replace MARSHALL ERSKINE on bass, and VIRGINIA SCOTT join the group on Mellotron. The record included the classic ‘Time Machine’, along with the memorable ‘Silver Peacock’ and ‘I’ve No Idea’.
"PATHFINDER” from 1972 was another classic album and featured a wonderful cover of Jim Webb’s ‘MacArthur Park’ along with ‘The Witch’ and ‘Hobo’. The band’s final album for Vertigo, 1973’s "GET YOUR DOG OFF ME” saw further line-up changes, but included a fine cover of Mason Williams’ ‘CLASSICAL GAS’ and saw further European success for the band.
This anthology is a fine tribute to an inspiring band and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes, and features a booklet with new essay.

Rock And Roll Animals
Cherry Red Records is delighted to release the brand new solo album from Luke Haines (The Servants, The Auteurs, Baader Meinhof& Black Box Recorder).
Rock N Roll Animals is a psychedelic story for grown-ups (and children). Jimmy Pursey is a frisky fox; Nick Lowe – a solid badger and Gene Vincent – a cat who's seen a bit more of life than most of us. Three furry freaks. Three Rock n Roll animals. The fable of our four-pawed shamen is narrated by the good folk of Magic Town.
This is a story of righteous rock n roll and how our three rock n roll animal friends, when not frolicking in the undergrowth, do battle with their most unrighteous nemesis – a fuck ugly bird (from Tyneside) made of steel and wire called The Angel Of The North.
The album will be preceded by a 7” single of the title track with two exclusive non-album B-Sides on 15th July. The album will also be released on limited edition 12” vinyl.
The album will coincide with the selected UK cinema release of the feature-length documentary film ‘Art Will Save The World’ about Luke Haines by Niall McCann.
