Salford based singer songwriter Vinny Peculiar (aka Alan Wilkes) releases an album of out takes & remixes entitled ‘The Root Mull Affect; the fifteen track collection cherry picks across a decade and a half of recordings. Its the perfect way to make his acquaintance and will be his 10th album release and the first to include remixes and re recordings of older songs.
Vinny has worked with Bill Drummond (SOUP ART) Tom Robinson (Video Art) and Luke Haines (Outsider Art) and his various bands have included former members of The Smiths, Oasis, Aztec Camera and The Fall. He’s played all kinds of stages in poetry and song and is a former MC on the Glastonbury Acoustic Stage. He’s a respected writer of dour yet playful lyrical songs that run deeper than first impressions might suggest.
‘Confessions of a Sperm Donor’ is a tragi-comic masterpiece with its money for old rope chorus of un-be known possibilities. ‘A Vision’ recounts an hallucinogenic day in the life when John Cooper Clarke joined The Beatles. There’s a live studio acoustic recording of ‘Sometimes I Feel Like King’, and a live band version of ‘Everlasting Teenage Bedroom’ (with Smiths rhythm section Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce) and a new mix of the old favourite ‘Jesus Stole My Girlfriend’. Comparisons to Ray Davies, Neil Hannon and Jarvis Cocker are regularly cited in dispatches. ‘The Root Mull Affect’ is an engaging intriguing and accessible collection from one England’s finest outsider independents. If you enjoy rich melodic art-pop songs that are just a bit different with great lyrics that tell stories and paint pictures you wont be disappointed. Vinny writes songs that make you laugh and cry at the same time and then he makes you think some more. Investigation is highly recommended.
Assorted Press quotes
‘Wry wit, incisive observations, touching humanity, and a 60s suburban English cultural sensibility (his label's named from kitchen sink escapism drama Billy Liar), summoning comparisons to not only Ray Davies, but Babybird, Jarvis Cocker, and Morrissey’ Mike Davies
‘If Tony Hancock had made pop records they’d have sounded like this’ UNCUT MAGAZINE – Simon Goddard
‘A songwriter who deserves to be taken seriously’ Q Magazine –
‘When you listen to a Vinny Peculiar album you cannot help but think that you have come across his diary and as you sit and read it you feel both uncomfortable and wonderful all at once. His music is littered with the complex and yet everyday emotions that the masses go through and it is reassuring to know that we are not alone in our ponderings and self-analytical behaviour. ‘Songwriting’s Angel of the Odd, Vinny Peculiar is like a celestial observer of the small, unseen dramas of daily life, delicate and delightful’. MEN Reviews
‘Like Vic Chestnutt tooled up for an armed robbery’. Irish Times
‘Curiously elegant confessionals from one of the UK’s most criminally under-rated talents; make room in your heart for this peculiar, but highly likeable man’. W&H
Nostalgia’s not what it used to be...
Imagine a surreal episode of My Two Dads where said fathers are Jarvis Cocker and David Bowie, who bully their child into liking them and everything they like, like glam stomp, kitchen sink vignettes, mordantly witty lyrics, nostalgia, dreams and a sneer, and you‘re ready for Vinny Peculiar, Manchester’s premier forward thinking backward looking song smith. AMERICANA-UK
"Confessions of a Sperm Donor” begins with the wonderful couplet "I used to be a feminist, I used to be a freak. Sold my sperm for bus fare I got £15 a week” – and indeed lyrically the album is devastatingly funny and moving almost right the way through’

Nimbus, The Vertigo Years Anthology 2CD
2 CD ANTHOLOGY
BY THE CLASSIC SCOTTISH PROGRESSIVE ROCK GROUP BEGGARS OPERA
REMASTERED FROM THE ORIGINAL TAPES
DRAWN FROM THE
BAND’S FOUR ALBUMS RECORDED FOR THE LEGENDARY VERTIGO LABEL BETWEEN 1970 &
FULLY RESTORED ARTWORK & ESSAY
Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a 2CD
ANTHOLOGY by the classic Scottish Progressive Rock group BEGGARS OPERA. Drawing
on material from the band’s first four albums, recorded for the legendary Vertigo
label, "NIMBUS” features 27 of the band’s best tracks.
Formed in Glasgow in 1969 with a line-up of RICKY
GARDINER (Guitar, Vocals), ALAN PARK (Keyboards), MARTIN GRIFFITHS (Vocals),
MARSHALL ERSKINE (Bass, Flute) and RAYMOND WILSON (Drums), the band signed to
the newly established progressive arm of Philips Records, Vertigo, in 1970.
Their debut album, "ACT ONE” gained some success in Europe with tracks such as ‘Poet
and Peasant’ and ‘Passacagalia’. A successful European hit single, ‘SARABANDE’,
was followed by the album "WATERS OF CHANGE”, arguably their best and most
successful album, and a line-up change that saw GORDON SELLAR replace MARSHALL
ERSKINE on bass, and VIRGINIA SCOTT join the group on Mellotron. The record
included the classic ‘Time Machine’, along with the memorable ‘Silver Peacock’
and ‘I’ve No Idea’.
"PATHFINDER” from 1972 was another classic album
and featured a wonderful cover of Jim Webb’s ‘MacArthur Park’ along with ‘The
Witch’ and ‘Hobo’. The band’s final album for Vertigo, 1973’s "GET YOUR DOG OFF
ME” saw further line-up changes, but included a fine cover of Mason Williams’ ‘CLASSICAL
GAS’ and saw further European success for the band.
This anthology is a fine tribute to an inspiring
band and has been newly re-mastered from the original master tapes, and
features a booklet with new essay.

New York In The '70s
New York in the '70s- May 19th 2014.
A mythic re-imagining of the New York Rock n Roll scene 1972 - 1979.
Scene 1 – A Dorset Chalkhill, Britain 2014.
A gigantic mythical naked man awakens from thousand year kip. Chico, a messenger bird, is speaking in tongues and whispering a poem into the naked dude's chalky ear:
"Oh Little Johnny Jewel
He's so cool
He has no decision
He just trying to sell a vision”
Chico (something of a savant, bless) is reciting the lyrics to Television's seismic year zeroin classic Little Johnny Jewel.
"He's just trying to sell a vision,” repeats the messenger bird. With an ancient rumble, the nakeddude stands up to reveal his true height of 180 ft.
"I am Cerne Abbus Giant, and Tom Verlaine is my main man,” bellows the Chalk Giant. "I awaken from Dorset Hills as the seeker. The seeker of Mythic Muthafuckin' Rock n Roll. Show me the way to CBGBs in the 1970s Chico. We will bestride the Atlantic and I'll carry you on my fantastic 36 ft phallus. Climb aboard Chico.”
"Oh my,” says the bird.
