Girls Fiesta - Ranking Dread

Girls Fiesta
•    Ranking Dread was as much of a myth and enigma as he was a music man and badman. But today he remains the connoisseur’s Dee Jay, admired for his slick style and delivery and compared to other noteworthy DJ’s of the time, can be seen as crucially under-recorded, having only released 4 albums and a handful of singles in his recording career.

•    Born in 1956 in the Kingston slum of Rema, Dread spent his early career divided between being an enforcer for the JLP as well as learning his trade as a toaster on local sound systems. Trouble with the law instigated his move to London where his recording career began.

•    Girls Fiesta is Ranking Dread’s first album, originally released in 1978 and contains some tough Linval Thompson rhythms taken from various Linval productions, most notably his "Love Is The Question” album.

•    This album stands at the crossroads of the Dee Jay phenomenon linking the eras between the might of I Roy and U Roy and the Dancehalls ruled by the Roots Radics rhythms. This is Rub A Dub at its finest.

•    After the early 80’s Dread’s recording career faded away as he got swept away into a serious life of crime, see the sleeve notes for an eye opening account of Dread’s life.

•    This is the first ever reissue of Girls Fiesta and is licensed direct from Linval Thompson.

•    Rhythms laid down at Channel One Studios by Sly & Robbie (amongst others) and Dread’s material voiced at Chalk Farm Studios Camden, engineered by Sid Bucknor.

The Thompson Sound 1979-82
•    Following the likes of Johnny Clarke and Linval Thompson, Barry Brown (born c. 1962) was one of those Jamaican singers whose career came to the fore in the era when roots reggae morphed into the early dancehall period in late 70’s and early 80’s.

•    Barry Brown paid his dues running errands and being a constant presence around the West Kingston recording studios before getting his break under the guidance of Bunny Lee. Brown would go on to release a string of singles and albums with Lee throughout the late 70’s, before going on to work with other producers such as Sugar Minott, King Jammy and Linval Thompson amongst many others.

•    Produced by Linval Thompson (whose voice was uncannily similar to Barry Brown’s), this album contains a couple of singles and versions recorded in 1979 as well as an albums worth of material from 1981-1982 that was shelved at the time due a perceived over-saturation of Barry Brown material doing the rounds.

•    Many tracks on CD for the first time ever.

•    Produced by Linval Thompson, recorded at Channel One, mixed at King Tubby’s by Scientist, rhythms by the Roots Radics.

•    This is a must have for those who like their conscious roots reggae backed with that heavy driving early 80’s Radics sound. An essential edition to the Barry Brown catalogue.

•    This CD is released 28th April and will not be shipped prior to this date.
