New Wave - Expanded 2 CD edition - Auteurs (The)

New Wave - Expanded 2 CD edition
"With their 1993 debut album, New Wave, The Auteurs established themselves as one of England's best guitar bands of the early '90s” Allmusic.com

Fronted by Luke Haines, The Auteurs arrived on the cusp of shifting musical scenes. Madchester was dead, Britpop was about to be born. · Originally released in February 1993 on Hut Records, New Wave was the debut album by The Auteurs. Produced by Phil Vinall and Haines, the album featured the singles Showgirl and How I Could Be Wrong. The album was well received on release, perceived as being part of a nascent Brit-Pop scene, and was nominated in the second Mercury Music Prize in 1993 (won by Suede) and was in Q magazine’s Top 10 Albums of 1993.

This re-issue, featuring 34 tracks across 2CDs compiled by Haines, includes key b-sides, acoustic tracks, the band’s BBC Radio 1 session from 1993 and 6 previously unreleased 4 track demos straight from Haines’s archive.

The 2CD set comes in lavish packaging and includes brand new sleevenotes by Luke Haines.

What if computers finally began getting more Africa in them? What if folk artists started emerging who sounded more post-modern than Cornelius or Pole? What would Click Folk or Glitch Folk sound like? What would Alan Lomax have said if, in 1965, the Newport Folk Festival had been invaded by boffins and geeks playing modular Moogs? What if you could hear, today, the Country Music of the year 2049? What about the Japanese country music of 2049? What would that sound like? What if electronics had appeared in 18th Century Scotland just at the moment of the Highland Clearances? How many mountains can you fit on a Minidisc? It's what Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack or Gary Numan might have sounded like if they'd jammed their way through the back catalogue of Steeleye Span. Small Time / Hey Hey We’re The Manqués 2CD

Formed in the mid ‘80s, The Servants was a vehicle for songwriter David Westlake. The band was included on the NME's C86 compilation, and by 1987 future Auteur Luke Haines had joined on guitar. Their debut album, "Disinterest”, was released in 1989, and they began to work on a follow-up, "Small Time”, before disbanding in the early 1990s.
Previously unreleased, and unheard by anyone outside of the band, ‘Small Time’ is the Servants' lost second album – "the best album… a strange and wonderful thing,” according to Haines in his sleeve-notes. In his book ‘Bad Vibes’, Haines describes the band’s first album, "Disinterest”, as 'existential art rock , ten years too late and fifteen years too early’. The songs on ‘Small Time’, he says are 'more mysterious, strange and beautiful, transcending their influence and sounding like nothing else.'
CD TWO of this set – "Hey Hey We’re The Manqués” – includes rehearsal versions of songs from "Disinterest”, taped before the album was recorded. "Disinterest” was recently included in MOJO magazine's list of 'the greatest British indie records of all time.'
Compiled and mastered by David Westlake, with sleeve-notes by Luke Haines, this set has been produced with the full involvement and approval of the artists and is a must-hear for anybody with an interest in adventurous, ethereal alternative pop.

Everything’s Shining Bright, the Lazy Recordings 1985-87 2CD
*** WE HAVE A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE, PLEASE ORDER NOW TO GET YOUR COPY!! ***

(PLEASE NOTE ALL SIGNED COPIES ARE NOW SOLD OUT!!)

Back in the mid-80s, The Primitives combined the fuzz guitars of The Jesus & Mary Chain with the pop sensibilities of Blondie and a nod to cult heroes The Velvet Underground. They swiftly rose from being a popular Indie guitar outfit to charting worldwide with "Crash”, kickstarting a craze in bands fronted by blonde female singers (Transvision Vamp, The Darling Buds et al).
Between 1985 and 1987, the band issued five singles/EP’s on independent label Lazy Records (also home to My Bloody Valentine and later Birdland) before signing with RCA.
Everything’s Shining Bright is named after their planned Lazy Records album, which was abandoned when the band left the label – indeed, seven of the ten previously unissued tracks here stem from those scotched LP sessions. Also unearthed is the band’s very first demo from 1985, consisting of three tracks including a dry-run through their eventual hit "Crash”.
This 2-CD set also boasts their promo-only live album at the ICA; as such, it offers their entire Lazy output from that period.
Those Lazy singles in full:
Thru The Flowers (May 1986) Indie No.20
Really Stupid (October 1986) Indie No.3
Stop Killing Me (February 1987) Indie No.2
Thru The Flowers (New Version - August 1987) Indie No.3
Ocean Blue (gig freebie 7”)
Compiled with guitarist PJ Court, this 2-CD compilation boasts re-mastered music as well as a beautifully annotated booklet boasting rare photos and personal memories from the band.

Quality Street: Vinyl

· World Of Twist are a deeply revered, respected band and one of the greatest ‘lost’ bands from Manchester. Genius is a moniker often given too easily but in World Of Twist’s case, not nearly enough. They cut through the hazy end of Madchester with a suaveness, a wit and an knowingness showcased by their collection of psychedeliic, soulful, madcap indie pop. It set them apart from anything else at the time – "a Roxy Music for the space age” as Louder Than War put it.

· Quality Street, their only album, was released in 1991. It features the singles The Storm, the ecstatic cover of the Stones She’s A Rainbow, Sweets and the legendary Sons Of The Stage.

· The band left a mark on many people who have achieved greatness - Jeremy Deller, one of the finest artists the UK has ever produced, included a "We Miss The World Of Twist” float in his work ‘Procession’ at the Manchester International Festival. Noel Gallagher nearly called Oasis Sons Of The Stage and Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye have covered that track in tribute to a band who influenced them so much. Noel even personally insisted that Jamie Fry, whose photographs grace the album artwork, was used for Oasis shoots.

· Now after many years of being unavailable, this legendary album is now available as a limited LP.Now after many years of being unavailable, this legendary album is now available on CD and LP.

We miss the World Of Twist. Do you?

Leave the Straight Life Behind: Expanded Edition
Legend has it that a chance meeting with John Peel in the Rough Trade record shop set Bob on the road to becoming a true indie favourite in the late 80s and early 90s, with Peel championing the band throughout their career.

Starting life in 1986, the band released a series of acclaimed singles, and with each single release, they toured and promised an album.  Eventually they got enough money together to release Leave The Straight Life Behind on their own House Of Teeth label in 1991.

The album met with rave reviews but due to the collapse of Rough Trade Distribution it was frustratingly difficult to find.  Now available again for the first time in many years, the album has been expanded to 2CDs, with a second disc including all four of their Radio 1 sessions, 3 for John Peel and 1 for Simon Mayo.

·       Unavailable for many years
·       Second disc includes all their BBC sessions, including 3 Peel Sessions
·       16 previously unreleased tracks
·       Extensive packaging includes sleevenotes by the band, rare photos and memorabilia from the band’s archive

Bob was formed in 1986 by Richard Blackborow (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Simon Armstrong (guitar, vocals), Jem Morris and a drum machine.  Gary Connors replaced the drum machine only to be replaced himself in 1988 by Dean Leggett, who had drummed for Jamie Wednesday, the outfit that spawned Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.  Morris was replaced by Stephen Hersom prior to Leave The Straight Life Behind.  Following the various pieces of bad luck that befell the band, they became disillusioned with the industry and finally split in 1995, leaving a legacy of eight singles, one compilation of early singles, the album and a legion of happy fans who had been lucky enough to see them live.  The single ‘Convenience’ graced the John Peel Festive Fifty in 1989.
