Legend has it that a chance
meeting with John Peel in the Rough Trade record shop set Bob on the road to
becoming a true indie favourite in the late 80s and early 90s, with Peel
championing the band throughout their career.
Starting life in 1986, the
band released a series of acclaimed singles, and with each single release, they
toured and promised an album. Eventually
they got enough money together to release Leave The Straight Life Behind on
their own House Of Teeth label in 1991.
The album met with rave
reviews but due to the collapse of Rough Trade Distribution it was
frustratingly difficult to find. Now
available again for the first time in many years, the album has been expanded
to 2CDs, with a second disc including all four of their Radio 1 sessions, 3 for
John Peel and 1 for Simon Mayo.
Unavailable for many years
Second disc includes all
their BBC sessions, including 3 Peel Sessions

Bob was formed in 1986 by
Richard Blackborow (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Simon Armstrong (guitar,
vocals), Jem Morris and a drum machine.
Gary Connors replaced the drum machine only to be replaced himself in
1988 by Dean Leggett, who had drummed for Jamie Wednesday, the outfit that
spawned Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine.
Morris was replaced by Stephen Hersom prior to Leave The Straight Life
Behind. Following the various
pieces of bad luck that befell the band, they became disillusioned with the
industry and finally split in 1995, leaving a legacy of eight singles, one
compilation of early singles, the album and a legion of happy fans who had been
lucky enough to see them live. The single ‘Convenience’
graced the John Peel Festive Fifty in 1989.

Blind EXPANDED EDITION
As early as the Icicle Works' second album, it became obvious that singer/songwriter Ian McNabb had little interest in further pursuing his career as a new wave tunesmith in the manner of his only U.K. hit, Love Is a Wonderful Colour.
Still, stylistic nods to Neil Young, Van Morrison, and Motown on post-1984 recordings could have hardly prepared the casual Icicle Works fan for the all-over-the-map musical journey that represented the original line up's fourth and final album, Blind. There's not even a hint of new wave on this record; beginning with a full-on Led Zeppelin-style rave up ( Shit Creek ), Blind then proceeds to careen wildly through several anthemic folk-rockers ( Here Comes Trouble, Starry Blue Eyed Wonder ), a Caribbean-style pop tune ( What Do You Want Me to Do ), a Prince-meets-INXS lite-funk workout ( The KissOff ), a raunchy blues-metal parody that even Zodiac Mindwarp might have found too over the top ( Two Two Three ).
Blind contains some of the Icicle Works' best individual tracks, including the singles High Time and Little Girl Lost. This 3-CD reissue-set contains 2 discs of rare and unreleased material in addition to the original album and also features updated booklets and notes by Classic Rock’s Jerry Ewing.
