Blame It On The Night - Kevin Coyne

Blame It On The Night
Cherry Red is delighted to announce the latest release for the rejuvenated Turpentine Records, the label founded by the late singer-songwriter, author and artist KEVIN COYNE.
Originally issued in 1974, BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT was Kevin’s third solo LP and his second for Virgin, as the follow-up to the acclaimed Marjory Razor Blade.
Long unavailable on vinyl, despite demand the LP has never been released on CD!
This deluxe 2-CD edition has been re-mastered by Tony Cousins, who played bass on both the original album and Marjory Razor Blade.
In addition to the original album, Disc 1 adds the single B-side ‘Queenie Queenie Caroline’, an alternative studio version of ‘Poor Swine’ from the Benelux-only LP ‘Let’s Have A Party’ and the soundtrack to the promotional film ‘Kevin Coyne at Hyde Park’, featuring live versions of ‘Poor Swine’ and ‘Marjory Razorblade Suite’.
Disc 2 boasts an entire, hitherto unheard early rendition of the album that includes between song chatter, alternate vocals and a different version of ‘Poor Swine’, along with the added bonus of three songs from the sessions which didn’t make the final cut.
The booklet features extensive sleeve-notes, including an exclusive interview with Tony Cousins, a piece on Kevin by producer Steve Verroca, track-by-track analysis by Kevin in interview in 1974, a fly-on-the-wall look at recording the album, and detailed notes from Kevin’s son Eugene Coyne.
Includes rare and previously unseen photos and cuttings of Kevin Coyne from the period.

Pavanne For Ahmad
The Ahmad Jamal Trio is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of jazz. Jamal was highly regarded by Miles Davis and John Coltrane who both mimicked his minimalistic style and publicly acknowledged his genius. Like his contemporaries John Lewis (modern jazz quartet) and Dave Brubeck, Jamal's music is timeless and is only now coming into real vintage. It crosses over very convincingly between jazz and lounge. These recordings are both rare and historically important. Our Price: £9.95

Beautiful Flowers
Flowers, beautiful flowers, children, humanity, lovely, love, life, embrace all - please! Yusef Lateef

Yusef Lateef is a Grammy award-winning composer, performer, recording artist, author, educator and philosopher who has been a major force on the international musical scene for more than six decades. He is universally acknowledged as one of the great living masters and innovators in the African-American tradition of autophysiopsychic music (that which comes from one’s spiritual, physical and emotional self).

As a virtuoso on a broad spectrum of reed instruments-tenor saxophone, flute, oboe, bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, argol, sarewa, and taiwan koto- Yusef Lateef has introduced delightful new sounds and blends of tone colours to audiences all over the world. Yusef Lateef is known for his innovative blending of eastern music with American jazz, paving the way for the likes of John Coltrane who would open up this musical territory in the sixties.

An exciting and adventurous addition to any jazz collection, this compilation features selections from the startlingly original Savoy albums Jazz Moods and Prayer To The East that established Yusef Lateef's reputation. This is music decades ahead of his time. Light, melodic, eclectic, this style is very much for the modern ear and remains full of possibility.

Duffy
60's blues fusion musician, writer and singer Duffy Power finally achieved a stand alone LP release in 1973 when an eponymous album hit the racks on the GSF label.

Produced by Adrian Millar, as one of several on going projects in a Production deal set up with partner Andrew Loog Oldham, the Duffy Power LP became to date the only purpose recorded album Duffy has had released in his career.

For this fine collection of Duffy originals Millar brought in a stellar cast of musicians, plus backing singers Dana Gillespie, Pam McKenna, Alexis Korner, and Del Newman for string arrangements, to help bring the songs to life.

The album was well received and Millar continued to be a fan of Duffy's songs, offering a second LP. Sessions were begun with a regular backing band called CWT ( see also the RATS (RPM 322) where they backed singer / songwriter David Kubinec). Sadly only three tracks survive today as yet again another Duffy album project remained on the shelf.

As a follow up to the two successful Anthologies of Duffy's 60's recordings RPM is proud to make available again for the first time in 30 years, and for the first time on CD, the 1973 LP Duffy Power, plus the three recordings from the aborted follow up album. The package includes very personal song by song annotation from Duffy, and more unseen photos from Duffy's archive.

A Life In Music 2CD
Ravi Shankar, who died aged 92, in December 2012, was the musical visionary who thanks to the cultural influences of his family, the advantages of a disciplined classical background and a heady sixties association with George Harrison and The Beatles, established the sitar and the raga into western consciousness. He was thus the first performer and composer to bridge the musical gap between India and the west.
Ravi Shankar is already considered to have been one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century.
Ravi's first musical ventures were as a child, appearing in his brother Uday's dance company in America and France. In his teens he was apprenticed to the sarod master, Allauddin Khan under who's demanding tutelage he would inherit the great tradition of Indian classical music.
By the time his first met George Harrison and Paul McCartney in 1966, Shankar had given recitals with Khan's son, the sarodist, Ali Akbar Khan, served as musical director of All India Radio's first National Orchestra, and been sent to all points on cultural tours by the Indian government. He had composed elegant film themes for Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, and taught and befriended the jazz musicians John Coltrane and Don Ellis.
Ravi met the Beatles at a point when the Fab Four were looking to expand their musical language and to make deeper artistic statements. Legend has it that they had already been introduced to Ravi's music by Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn at an LSD party in Los Angeles and indeed they dabbled with the sitar on the 1965 hit, Norwegian Wood. On meeting Ravi Shankar, George Harrison determined to take the instrument seriously, soon journeying to meet Ravi in India for a period of intensive tuition. There by the banks of the Dal Lake in Srinagar, the guitarist was inspired to write Within You Without You for the album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles' tribute to Ravi Shankar.
The flower-power generation were beguiled by Ravi. He appeared at the
Monterey and Woodstock Festivals, and at the Concert for Bangledesh in New York in 1971 and made no attempt attempt to conceal his appreciation of the adulation, "Though I had been performing all over the world since 1954, my association with George attracted a whole young generation to sitar and to me from the mid-1960s. Even though I didn't make any record jamming with him or any other pop or rock star, I was treated like a superstar, being the Beatle George's guru.”
The recordings featured here are likely those that turned the The Beatles
on to Ravi. They were made between 1956 and 1962 and for all the success that followed they are arguably the pinnacle of his recorded artistry.
