Blame It On The Night - Kevin Coyne

Blame It On The Night
Cherry Red is delighted to announce the latest release for the rejuvenated Turpentine Records, the label founded by the late singer-songwriter, author and artist KEVIN COYNE.
Originally issued in 1974, BLAME IT ON THE NIGHT was Kevin’s third solo LP and his second for Virgin, as the follow-up to the acclaimed Marjory Razor Blade.
Long unavailable on vinyl, despite demand the LP has never been released on CD!
This deluxe 2-CD edition has been re-mastered by Tony Cousins, who played bass on both the original album and Marjory Razor Blade.
In addition to the original album, Disc 1 adds the single B-side ‘Queenie Queenie Caroline’, an alternative studio version of ‘Poor Swine’ from the Benelux-only LP ‘Let’s Have A Party’ and the soundtrack to the promotional film ‘Kevin Coyne at Hyde Park’, featuring live versions of ‘Poor Swine’ and ‘Marjory Razorblade Suite’.
Disc 2 boasts an entire, hitherto unheard early rendition of the album that includes between song chatter, alternate vocals and a different version of ‘Poor Swine’, along with the added bonus of three songs from the sessions which didn’t make the final cut.
The booklet features extensive sleeve-notes, including an exclusive interview with Tony Cousins, a piece on Kevin by producer Steve Verroca, track-by-track analysis by Kevin in interview in 1974, a fly-on-the-wall look at recording the album, and detailed notes from Kevin’s son Eugene Coyne.
Includes rare and previously unseen photos and cuttings of Kevin Coyne from the period.

Discovery! & Nirvana

Released on 27/09/10. Memphis, Tennessee. Was the place where Charles Lloyd, one of the great jazz saxophonists, was born. And where music got right into his soul.

Lloyd’s credentials are impressive on all counts. Shortly after graduating from the University of Southern California in 1960, he joined the Chicago Hamilton Quintet. In late 1961, Chico broke up the group and reorganised it with Charles as musical director in charge of repertoire and personnel. As an instrumentalist, Charles Lloyd is forceful and imaginative improviser with a warmly rich tone and a technical command enabling him to cut loose with an emotional abandon that nevertheless remains in control. As a composer, he combines the gift for melodic development and structural form with that invaluable quality of identifiability. Once you have heard a few Lloyd compositions, you will recognize his personal stamp, just as one can spot a new composition by, say, Thelonious Monk.

'Nirvana', is perhaps the finest album from the Charles Lloyd Quartet following on from 'Discovery! His band at the time was a spread of true giants. On piano there was Keith Jarrett, on bass there was Ron McClure and drums one Jack De Johnette. It was an impressive conglomeration and counterbalance of ability. But it was most decidedly led by Lloyd.

While the Charles Lloyd Quartet had more significant commercial success with other albums, there is a strong case to be made that they were never better than here. This is inventive, accessible, yet also has a depth and range that proved it could appeal to the traditionalists while at the same time attracting a younger audience, one that didn't want to hear old school jazz, but wanted something that allowed them to get 'high' on the music. This was it.

Os Afro-Sambas / A Vontade
Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, (Girl from Ipanema, Chega de Saudade and Insensatez are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialisation of the movement by the mid-sixties. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell'smelodic gifts with Bahian folk traditions and Gregorian chant. With the joyous vocalisations of Quarteto Em Cy, the atmosphere is at once haunting and spontaneous. The music hasn’t even begun to date. Recorded at a time when musicians around the world were looking to break down barriers - between classical and pop, East and West - but the Afro-sambas appear to recognise no such barriers in the first place. Os Afro-Sambas is an absolute stunner. One of the most exquisite pieces of Brazilian music ever recorded, it is combined on this edition with the intimate, irresistible, A Vontade, Baden'smost successful solo LP of the period and one of his finest achievements.

Gun
Race With The Devil, reached the UK Top Ten in December 1968, it catapulted power trio the Gun from the bowels of the London underground club circuit to the forefront of the British pop scene. Released a couple of months later, the group s self-titled debut album boasted an equally dazzling, idiosyncratic combination of hard rock ferocity and striking orchestral arrangements, and it can now be seen as a major stepping stone in the gradual metamorphosis of late 60s psychedelic rock into what would become known as heavy metal. This newly re-mastered reissue features contemporaneous single releases, rare photos and fresh quotes from founder member Paul Gurvitz.
