The Clock Comes Down The Stairs - Microdisney

The Clock Comes Down The Stairs
Microdisney began recording in their native town of Cork, Ireland. Their first few singles, including 1983's "Pink Skinned Man", were producedby Dave Feeley, and released on indie label Kabuki records After relocating toLondon, they signed toRough Trade, and utilised John Porter(producer ofThe Smiths) to produce their debut album,Everybody is Fantastic. At this time, the band became acquainted withJohn Peel, who championed their music, and gave them the first of several celebrated Peel Sessions Originally released in 1985,The Clock Comes down the Stairs was the first of three albums--the other two are the ensuing releases Crooked Mileand39 Minutes--on which this superb band finally got it right. It was never an easy equation for Microdisney to balance--the musical prettiness of Sean O'Hagan and the lyrical savagery of Cathal Coughlan--but it all adds up here rather wondrously. The Clock Comes down the Stairs seems to be Coughlan meticulously chronicling his own decline. As is invariably the case with Coughlan, however, the decline of everyone and everything else also gets a mention. In the mid-1980s, bands were either in the charts, which meant they sounded like Wham!, or they were alternative, in which case they sounded like The Jesus & Mary Chain. Nobody really knew what to do with a collection of recalcitrant Irishmen whose music evoked Jimmy Webb, Steely Dan and The Walker Brothers, and whose words were consumed with paranoia and disgust. On "Goodbye It's 1987"--a startlingly unconcerned-sounding prediction of Armageddon--Cathal introduces one of O'Hagan's impeccable guitar solos with the muttered exhortation "Let's tax the wages of sin". In the summer of Live Aid, it was never likely to be a big radio favourite. This re-issue – made in conjunction with the band - contains rare single B-sides and the complete Peel session recorded at the time. With notes in collaboration with the band by Terry Staunton and a book packed with memorabilia this release serves as a great re-introduction to this finest of Irish bands

Bow Wow Wow
Bow Wow Wow was Malcolm McLaren's (RIP Bless him) first big project after the Sex Pistols imploded, and the erstwhile media manipulator made sure his new band bounded onto the scene with a whole gaggle of gimmicks. The first was Annabella Lwin, a 14-year-old Burmese immigrant McLaren found working in a laundry and decided to remake into a post punk goddess. Then there was what used to be Adam's Ants, the trio of Matthew Ashman (guitar), Leroy Gorman (bass), and Dave Barbarossa (drums), whom McLaren introduced to African music -- specifically, the sound of Burundi tribal drumming – then induced to dump Adam and follow him. But it was the product that ultimately pulled the package together. Bow Wow Wow's cassette-only first single, a home-taping anthem called C-30, C-60, C-90 Go! , Much the same can be said for the impossibly titled See Jungle! See Jungle! (etc.) which introduced the group to this country.

Pleasure
Released 18/05/09. Girls At Our Best were one of the finest, most life-affirming of a new breed of independent bands who cropped up at the turn of the 80s – long-standing fan John Peel once referred to them as one of the few groups that made the period bearable. Formed in Leeds from the ashes of legendary original punk band SOS, the group were fronted by distinctive female vocalist Jude ‘Jo’ Evans, forming a songwriting team with guitarist James Alan and bass player Gerard Swift after they met at art college. All four of their singles for their own Record Records, Rough Trade and Happy Birthday Records are included here as bonus tracks – including the wonderful ‘Getting Nowhere Fast’ (later covered by The Wedding Present), its coruscating b-side ‘Warm Girls’, ‘Politics!’, ‘Go For Gold’ and ‘Fast Boyfriends’. Also included is a previously unreleased session for BBC DJ Richard Skinner. As a final bonus, there’s also a completely unheard, virgin demo from the band’s very final recording session. All tracks have been digitally re-mastered from source tapes where possible. Our Price: £9.95

Queen of Siam
Queen of Siam was Lydia Lunch first solo outing, and many would say her best. After displaying an unrepeatable angst with Teenage Jesus and The Jerks (cdmred367) Lydia decided to challenge the world and use her art in another way and in doing so coming across as a psychotic sex-kitten sing along to a warped and jazz-like sound-track. The result is astounding, melodic and seductive yet dark and morbid. A noir-musical. Lydia’s magnificent delivery of words is put to full use here, as the lyrics fall from her mouth like liquid yet still retaining the bite and attitude from her former years. With liner notes from none other than lady herself, Lydia writes a memoir of the Queen of Siam period, using thesame acid wit that is apparent in her cult book, Paradoxia. The original cover is used on this release which has never been on CD before, and included in the liner notes are many rare and unseen pictures.
