Eventide 2CD - Faith Brothers

Eventide 2CD
Fronted by talented songwriter Billy Franks and his lifelong friend from Fulham Court, Lee Hirons, the Faith Brothers were one of the most hotly-tipped bands of 1985. Their impassioned brand of blue-eyed soul attracted comparisons with The Style Council and the Spencer Davis Group while their socialist views linked them in the media with the likes of Billy Bragg and the Redskins.
Eventide was the Faith Brothers’ debut album, issued on Siren Records in 1985. It reached the Top 75 and included the singles ‘Eventide’ and ‘Whistling In The Dark’ but omitted by their popular radio hits from earlier that year, ‘Country Of The Blind’ and ‘A Stranger On Home Ground’.
Amazingly, Eventide has never before been issued on CD!
This deluxe 2-CD set expands the original 11-track album with a bonus disc of 15 further tracks, adding those missing singles as well as their pre-Siren indie debut ‘A Tradesman’s Entrance’ and a demo version of ‘Newtown’ which graced a flexidisc free with Jamming! magazine.
The Faith brothers were championed by Jamming!’s editor Tony Fletcher, who eventually became their manager. Now a successful author (Keith Moon, The Smiths, REM), Tony has written a heartfelt foreword for this long-overdue reissue.
Compiled with the help of Billy and Lee (and remastered with TLC by Lee), this 2-CD expanded edition boasts re-mastered music as well as a splendid, annotated booklet boasting rare photos and extracts from Billy’s hilarious yet touching autobiography A Far Cry From Sunset.

Mass In F Minor / Release Of An Oath
Released in 1967 and 1968 these Electric Prunes albums were certainly something different ie progressive, psychedelic, religious rock.
The "Mass In F Minor” is best known for the song ‘Kyrie Eleison’ which was featured in the movie soundtrack of Easy Rider. Instrumentally the Prunes only appeared on the first three tracks. Jim Lowe, whose vocals were double-tracked for effect, later commented "David Axelrod was so far above what we as a garage band were able to deliver that outside musicians were used to complete the recording, including members of Canadian band The Collectors (later to become Chilliwack)”.
"Release Of An Oath” is based on one of the most sacred Jewish prayers, the Kol Nidre which is recited on the eve of Yom Kippur.
Both albums feature orchestra and top Los Angeles studio musicians. They were written and arranged by David Axelrod.
The ideal coupling of two classic albums.

Love Your Enemies
Microdisney began recordingin their native town of Cork,Ireland. Their first few singles, including 1983's "Pink Skinned Man", wereproducedby Dave Feeley, and released onindielabelKabuki records After relocating to London, they signed to Rough Trade, and utilised John Porter(producer ofThe Smiths) to produce their debut album, Everybody is Fantastic. At this time, the band became acquainted withJohn Peel, who championed their music, and gave them the first of several celebrated Peel Sessions Originally released in 1984 with the titleWe Hate You South African Bastards,Love Your Enemies is a fascinating collection of Microdisney's early work. At this stage, the balance between the impeccable west coast pop pastiches of Sean O'Hagan and the lyrical ferocity of Cathal Coughlan was erratic but workable enough to signify that Microdisney were going to be something special, Love Your Enemieshas all the hallmarks of pop juvenilia: tinny production, occasional over-elaboration and, in Coughlan's case, a rich Cork accent still unsullied by the duo's relocation. Even now, however, Coughlan--who deserves to be measured among the very finest pop lyricists--was displaying a rare facility for language and an unerring instinct for absurdity. "Helicopter of the Holy Ghost" and "Michael Murphy" both deploy their words with a gleeful violence, and there can be little doubt whose idea it was to title O'Hagan's polite instrumentals "Patrick Moore Says You Can't Sleep Here" and "Pretoria Quickstep".Love Your Enemiesalso contains Microdisney's first truly realised moment: "Loftholdingswood", something like a Steely Dan radio hit with words by Jonathan Swift. Coughlan's taunt of "Aren't you glad you were born in England?" remains a benchmark for sarcasm in music This re-issue - made in conjunction with the band - contains rare single B-sides and the complete Peel session recorded at the time. With notes in collaboration with the band by Terry Staunton and a book packed with memorabilia this release serves as a great re-introduction to this finest of Irish bands.
