Desert Orchid 2CD - Crazyhead

Desert Orchid 2CD
With band members called Porkbeast (bass), Fast Transatlantic Dick and Reverb (guitars), Vom (drums) and plain ol’ Anderson (vocals), Crazyhead were never going to be a band one could easily ignore. Formed in Leicester in 1986, they emerged through the contrived UK Grebo scene – a music press catch-all term for a loose collection of bands generating 60s garage & alternative rock, electronica, hip hop and pop – of the late 80s and early 90s.
Singed to Food Records who in-turn operated under the umbrella of EMI, Crazyhead gained instant indie chart success with their debut and follow-up singles, ‘What Gives You The Idea That You’re So Amazing Baby?’ and ‘Baby Turpentine’ which reached number 2 and 4 respectively. Their debut album ‘Desert Orchid’ was so named following a successful flutter by the band from a day at the races when the steeplechase legend of the same name was first past the post at one of his many meetings.
Crazyhead’s outwardly lackadaisical image belied the aptitude and vigour of the album’s song writing. Tracks such as, ‘Time Has Taken Its Toll On You’ and ‘Rags’ (both also released as singles), along with ‘Buy A Gun’ and ‘I Don’t Want That Kind Of Love’ display an innate ability to instantly latch onto ones cerebral cortex and forever remain. Their cover of Richard Berry’s, ‘Have Love Will Travel’ is arguably one of the definitive versions of this 50s hit, a version of which can be heard in the current LV= car insurance TV ad. campaign.
This long overdue Re-mastered Collector’s edition of the album gathers all the single b-sides, alternative mixes and live performances from the era onto a second disc, plus a cover of label mates Diesel Park West’s, ‘Like Princes Do’, which appeared on the Food Records Christmas EP in 1989.

Now For A Feast : EXPANDED 25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
In 1986, Pop Will Eat Itself burst onto the UK and European independent scene with a flurry of energetic, punk infused singles, including their self pressed and distributed debut, Poppies Say GRRrrr! and others released by Chapter 22. During that year they became mainstays of the UK music press and blazed a trail towards the hip-hop tinged direction they would take with their second album, Box Frenzy . This set charts this first year of the band's career, including seven previously unheard demos and live cuts from the band's own archives and a number of later b-sides. Including a previously unreleased song ( Summer Girl ), early incarnations of tracks re-recorded and released in later years and demos of the impossible to find debut EP by Wild and Wandering (the name the band operated under before becoming PWEI), this really is a treasure trove for fans and collectors.

Produced with full co-operation and support from the band members, and including both an essay and sleeve-notes from keyboardist/guitarist Adam Mole, as well as never before seen archive shots and press clippings, this package is the first in a series of Cherry Red Pop Will Eat Itself reissues which will take in the band's entire catalogue, tell their story and see the release of dozens of unreleased, rare and never before on CD tracks. This unique band, whose influence touched the careers of acts such as The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, still has a large, strong following worldwide, and there is an active online community who have shown great interest in these titles thus far. A new PWEI album will be released this year, and the current incarnation of the group will be touring in support of this release, no doubt including plenty of their back catalogue in their set. Seven previously unheard recordings, Two rare B-sides Sleeve-notes from keyboardist/guitarist Adam Mole Archive photographs and press clippings Packaged with reversible US/UK original artwork.

Press:-

"Their earliest indie rock scuzz is collected on ‘88’s Now For A Feast!, by which time ‘87’s Box Frenzy had incorporated sampling and other hip hop moves into proto-indie dance off daffy joie de vivre. Both come engorged with bonuses, some of which seem to have been mastered off old cassettes.”
