Slow Music - Morgan Fisher & Lol Coxhill

Slow Music
Recorded in 1980, this collaboration between master tape manipulator Morgan Fisher and legendary improvisational saxophonist Lol Coxhill sees the two explore a mutual interest in treating their work as mere raw material for further experimentation and re-modeling.
Working in Fisher’s Notting Hill home studio, Coxhill’s performances (including Handel’s ‘Largo’ and his own ‘Pretty Little Girl’) were recorded and reworked using a number of innovative studio techniques to create entirely new material, some of which was used as a background for further performances by the pair, the rest treated to further manipulation via tape delays, synthesiser filters and other electronic equipment, resulting in multi layered tape loop pieces, drones and sound collages.
Originally released on Pipe Records (funded by Cherry Red founder Iain McNay), this reissued edition has been remastered by Morgan himself, and is accompanied by a bonus track, ‘Play Quiet’. Originally available only on a cassette given away with the UK’s ‘ZG Magazine’, this piece features music performed by John White, Gavin Bryars and Dave Smith at the launch party for Fisher’s ‘Miniatures’ album and collaged with remixed material from "Slow Music”. A fantastic rarity available here on CD for the first time.
With sleeve-notes and reprographics by Fisher, including a timeline of both artists’ careers and their original texts from the 1980 release, this edition is a must have for fans of either artist, enthusiasts of home studio techniques and lovers of experimental recordings of any kind.

Discovery! & Nirvana

Released on 27/09/10. Memphis, Tennessee. Was the place where Charles Lloyd, one of the great jazz saxophonists, was born. And where music got right into his soul.

Lloyd’s credentials are impressive on all counts. Shortly after graduating from the University of Southern California in 1960, he joined the Chicago Hamilton Quintet. In late 1961, Chico broke up the group and reorganised it with Charles as musical director in charge of repertoire and personnel. As an instrumentalist, Charles Lloyd is forceful and imaginative improviser with a warmly rich tone and a technical command enabling him to cut loose with an emotional abandon that nevertheless remains in control. As a composer, he combines the gift for melodic development and structural form with that invaluable quality of identifiability. Once you have heard a few Lloyd compositions, you will recognize his personal stamp, just as one can spot a new composition by, say, Thelonious Monk.

'Nirvana', is perhaps the finest album from the Charles Lloyd Quartet following on from 'Discovery! His band at the time was a spread of true giants. On piano there was Keith Jarrett, on bass there was Ron McClure and drums one Jack De Johnette. It was an impressive conglomeration and counterbalance of ability. But it was most decidedly led by Lloyd.

While the Charles Lloyd Quartet had more significant commercial success with other albums, there is a strong case to be made that they were never better than here. This is inventive, accessible, yet also has a depth and range that proved it could appeal to the traditionalists while at the same time attracting a younger audience, one that didn't want to hear old school jazz, but wanted something that allowed them to get 'high' on the music. This was it.

Miniatures One + Two Edited by Morgan Fisher
Featuring artists as diverse as The Residents, Robert Fripp, XTC'sAndy Partridge, Pete Seeger, Robert Wyatt and The Pretenders Martin Chambers, as well as cover artwork contributed by Ralph Steadman, Morgan Fisher's1980 release Miniatures truly was a first. Overwhelmed with concepts for potential releases, Fisher decided to see how many of these ideas he might be able to squeeze onto just one album. Rather than performing everything himself, he invited 50 musicians he admired to send in tracks of up to one minute in length. They responded with unanimous enthusiasm, and Miniatures was born out of Morgan’s’ precise editing and sequencing of these tracks, providing a unique snapshot of the cutting-edge music of the period and achieving legendary status amongst those who cherish such creativity and individuality in the process. Fast forward 15 years, several projects and the development of new realms of communication and data transfer afforded by the Internet, and Morgan decided the time was right for a sequel. Little did he know that this project would take six years to complete and involve an international cast of players (taking in 18 countries across five continents), but it proved truly worth both the effort and the wait. The astounding Miniatures 2 brings together over 60 musicians and artists of all genres - the bizarre, the eccentric, the contemplative, the rebel-rousers, the pioneers and the philosophers and no stone was left unturned in its creation. As with the original album, one minute creations were composed, then sequenced and edited by Morgan, again meeting with rave reviews and an acknowledgement that Fisher had produced something both original and vital to those with any interest in music existing outside the mainstream. Comprising both legendary tiny masterpiece collections, this new set brings together all one hundred and thirteen tracks (yes, 113!) in one two-disc collection for the first time, freshly boosted and tweaked for 2008. Os Afro-Sambas / A Vontade
Vinicius de Moraes was the principal lyricist of Bossa Nova, (Girl from Ipanema, Chega de Saudade and Insensatez are amongst the famous international hit songs he wrote with Tom Jobim), and Os Afro-Sambas is his response to the commercialisation of the movement by the mid-sixties. Co-written with the brilliant Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell and eventually released in 1966, these eight songs combine Powell'smelodic gifts with Bahian folk traditions and Gregorian chant. With the joyous vocalisations of Quarteto Em Cy, the atmosphere is at once haunting and spontaneous. The music hasn’t even begun to date. Recorded at a time when musicians around the world were looking to break down barriers - between classical and pop, East and West - but the Afro-sambas appear to recognise no such barriers in the first place. Os Afro-Sambas is an absolute stunner. One of the most exquisite pieces of Brazilian music ever recorded, it is combined on this edition with the intimate, irresistible, A Vontade, Baden'smost successful solo LP of the period and one of his finest achievements.

At Cranbrook And Elsewhere
Released on 21/09/09. A virtuoso of the tenor sax, flue and oboe, Lateef worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Cannonball Adderley, Miles Davis and Grant Green and is today best known for his innovative blending of eastern music with American jazz, paving the way for the likes of John Coltrane who would open up this musical territory in the sixties. At Cranbrook is Lateef’srarest album, and one of the few that has never previously been re-issued on CD. Our edition comprises the original album, recorded live at Cranbrook Academy of Art on April 9 1958 and is augmented by brilliantly adventurous repertoire from sessions recorded in - for Yusef, the hectic pivotal year - of 1957. These selections are those that founded his reputation as a pioneer for World Music. Compositions involving such exotic instrumentation as the one-stringed instrument, the rebab, finger cymbals, the scraped gourd, castanets and the argool, the unusual timbres and colours of which would have come as a huge shock to the listener back in the Fifties. Today, Yusef Lateef is held in international esteem and his work, so far ahead of it’s time half a century ago, has never seemed more essential. Strong export potential to America and all specialist jazz and world music outlets everywhere. Our Price: £9.95

Pavanne For Ahmad
The Ahmad Jamal Trio is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of jazz. Jamal was highly regarded by Miles Davis and John Coltrane who both mimicked his minimalistic style and publicly acknowledged his genius. Like his contemporaries John Lewis (modern jazz quartet) and Dave Brubeck, Jamal's music is timeless and is only now coming into real vintage. It crosses over very convincingly between jazz and lounge. These recordings are both rare and historically important. Our Price: £9.95
