Nobody Dies in Dreamland: Home Recordings 1972 - Kevin Coyne

Nobody Dies in Dreamland: Home Recordings 1972
Cherry Red is delighted to announce the first release for the rejuvenated Turpentine Records, the label founded by the late singer-songwriter/author/artist Kevin Coyne.

Nobody Dies In Dreamland is a collection of songs recorded in 1972, prior to the release of Case History, Kevin’s solo debut album for John Peel’s Dandelion Records, in his flat in Clapham. Stark yet soulful, naked and insightful, these previously unissued performances feature Kevin on acoustic guitar and harmonica.

They offer a fascinating glimpse into an artist in his prime, who would inspire John Lydon, Sting, Ben Watt and Will Oldham and would collaborate with Robert Wyatt, Andy Summers, Dagmar Krause, Brendan Croker, Gary Lucas and The Mekons’ Jon Langford.

‘Uggy’s Song’, ‘Need Somebody’, ‘Evil Island Home’, ‘Araby’ and ‘Mad Boy’ were later re-recorded for Case History while ‘Marlene’ appeared on its follow-up, Marjory Razor Blade, and ‘Bitch’ (re-titled ‘Witch’) on Blame It On The Night in 1974. ‘Black Cloud’ surfaced on Legless In Manila in 1984, while ‘One More Drink’ exists as an out-take from Blame It On The Night.

Nobody Dies In Dreamland will enjoy widespread critical acclaim across the UK music media, with reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Record Collector, etc.

Press:-

"God bless the ones who don’t fit anywhere. Kevin Coyne’s son Eugene puts it best when describing the uniquely quixotic allure of his late father ‘drawing on the Delta blues and Derby, George Formby and John Lee Hooker”.

"…but all showcase Coyne as an authentic British bluesman, his idiosyncratic music a synthesis of the likes of John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and his beloved George Formby .” – Mike Barnes, MOJO, JULY 2012

Record Collector May 2012

"Coyne is the quintessential cult artist. Many albums would follow this, but few would be as stark, intimate or revealing as this.” – Classic Prog, May 2012

"Doubtlessly created on a whim, it exemplifies the instinctive emotional potency that made Coyne so remarkable.” - Rychard Carrington / R2 Rock ‘n’ Reel - July/August 2012
