This Is The Day…This Is The Hour…This Is This! Expanded Edition - Pop Will Eat Itself

This Is The Day…This Is The Hour…This Is This! Expanded Edition
Following a series of independent chart successes released on Chapter 22 Records, PWEI were, in 1988, signed to BMG and produced this, arguably their most iconic album. Boasting indie dance-floor classics ‘Def Con One’ and ‘Can U Dig It?’, as well as a number of other standout tracks and fan favourites (‘Wise Up! Sucker’, ‘Preaching To The Perverted’ etc), this record took the band’s appeal beyond the UK and into America and Australia, as well as furthering interest throughout Europe. A furious blend of dance, hip-hop, rock and techno, "This Is This” was truly ahead of it’s time, and blazed a trail that would eventually lead to The Prodigy and several other rock-techno acts who thrived during the early 1990s.

Expanded here into a 2CD edition, and produced in conjunction with the band themselves, this incredible package features a plethora of b-sides, rare remixes, demos (from the band’s archives) and never before heard tracks from the BMG archives, including the legendary lost ‘Very Metal Noise Pollution’ EP 12” mixes, early versions of two of the album’s singles and an early recording of a track from 1990’s follow up album "The PWEI Cure For Sanity”.

Added to this, the package features sleeve-notes by the band’s own Adam Mole, an essay on this period of their career and some fantastic archive images. All reissues should be of this standard.

A must have package for any PWEI fan, and a brilliant showcase of a remarkable album. This record has international appeal and promises to put the band’s trailblazing career under the microscope again.

Will Anything Happen
The Shop Assistants were one of the defining bands of the 80s independent boom. Formed in Edinburgh in 1984, originally as Buba & The Shop Assistants, they released the Peel-approved Indie staple ‘Something To Do’, which featured Stephen Pastel on backing vocals. With line-up changes and an abbreviated name, they released the ‘Shopping Parade’ EP a year later, which saw Morrissey describe ‘All Day Long’ (included on this collection) as his favourite track of the year. The band’s David Keegan (who would subsequently join the Pastels) then formed 53rd & 3rd Records, which housed the band’s ‘Safety Net’, one of two songs, along with ‘I Don’t Want To Be Friends With You’ (again, included here) to be voted part of John Peel’s Festive Fifty of 1986. The Shop Assistants, aka Will Anything Happen, is their sole album release, and is accompanied here by two bonus tracks; ‘Looking Back’ and the ‘slow version’ of ‘All Day Long’. Although reissued in 2001, it has long been out of print, fetching scary prices on a well known auction site in acknowledgement of its status as one of the indispensable articles of the C86/shambling/independent scene.

Now For A Feast : EXPANDED 25th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
In 1986, Pop Will Eat Itself burst onto the UK and European independent scene with a flurry of energetic, punk infused singles, including their self pressed and distributed debut, Poppies Say GRRrrr! and others released by Chapter 22. During that year they became mainstays of the UK music press and blazed a trail towards the hip-hop tinged direction they would take with their second album, Box Frenzy . This set charts this first year of the band's career, including seven previously unheard demos and live cuts from the band's own archives and a number of later b-sides. Including a previously unreleased song ( Summer Girl ), early incarnations of tracks re-recorded and released in later years and demos of the impossible to find debut EP by Wild and Wandering (the name the band operated under before becoming PWEI), this really is a treasure trove for fans and collectors.

Produced with full co-operation and support from the band members, and including both an essay and sleeve-notes from keyboardist/guitarist Adam Mole, as well as never before seen archive shots and press clippings, this package is the first in a series of Cherry Red Pop Will Eat Itself reissues which will take in the band's entire catalogue, tell their story and see the release of dozens of unreleased, rare and never before on CD tracks. This unique band, whose influence touched the careers of acts such as The Prodigy and Nine Inch Nails, still has a large, strong following worldwide, and there is an active online community who have shown great interest in these titles thus far. A new PWEI album will be released this year, and the current incarnation of the group will be touring in support of this release, no doubt including plenty of their back catalogue in their set. Seven previously unheard recordings, Two rare B-sides Sleeve-notes from keyboardist/guitarist Adam Mole Archive photographs and press clippings Packaged with reversible US/UK original artwork.

Press:-

"Their earliest indie rock scuzz is collected on ‘88’s Now For A Feast!, by which time ‘87’s Box Frenzy had incorporated sampling and other hip hop moves into proto-indie dance off daffy joie de vivre. Both come engorged with bonuses, some of which seem to have been mastered off old cassettes.”
