76 Kids Forever - Sudden Sway

76 Kids Forever
Sudden Sway formed in 1980 and throughout the 80s they mixed art and science into a unique musical world which was always odd and yet politically astute. 76 Kids, the "Soap Opera Musical" by Sudden Sway was originally performed and recorded in 1988 and is best described as a seventies version of West Side Story mixed with Brookside. The storyline follows a group of teenage kids growing up in a small town in the Seventies and their attempts to break free of their uneventful lives and make it big in London in the 80s. It's a weird mix of the banal and ordinary which seems strangely familiar alongside today's reality TV. But behind this is a real political jab at the enterprise culture of the 80s, which promised such a bright new future. As Ray Mcfarlane says in the show "I will ride on windsurf to wonderland". Says it all really. 76 kids was not performed on stage but transmitted live over telephone chat lines operated by Virgin and linked to Night Network on Channel 4. The original album of 76 Kids was released by Rough Trade in 1988. This version released by Cherry Red is identical but with the addition of a 3 minute trailer for the show and is the first time it has been available on CD. Sudden Sway have now reformed and have resigned to Rough Trade.
