Me Too! - R. Stevie Moore

Me Too!

UNFORTUNATELY THIS TITLE IS CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK. Cherry Red Records apologises for the unavailability of this album, however if you would like to be notified when it is on sale again then please email matti@cherryred.co.uk. Thanks.

Over the last 40 years, the legendary R Stevie Moore (son of Nashville'sveteran bass session man Bob) has dedicated his life to the crafting of hundreds of home recorded albums and sound diaries, most of which have been released on his own self-run label. His mastery of song craft, combined with an impressive ear for production and an unmatchable work rate, have resulted in a good degree of underground recognition, although mainstream success has managed to consistently elude him until now. Covering everything from Psych-Pop to Hip Hop, Spoken Word to Found Sound, his oeuvre is as beguiling as it is intriguing, making him both a much loved Lo-Fi figurehead (receiving high praise from artists and press alike) and a significant contributor to the untold history of recorded music. This comprehensive release, compiled in collaboration with Stevie himself, provides a fascinating introduction to the most accessible areas of his early work, covering material recorded between 1974 and 1986. Far from a complete overview or Best Of (an impossible task given the size of his repertoire), it'sbest viewed as a gateway into a vast, freeform world of music for music's sake a place where freedom roams, one man is king and just about anything can happen, provided it can be caught on tape. Press Quotes "R Stevie Moore is probably the world's most prolific unknown singer-songwriter, his colossal output representing a victory for creativity over indifference. A sort of bedroom Brian Wilson, for 40 years RSM has crafted elegant and complex pop in a vast array of styles, playing everything himself and releasing the results on an estimated 400 albums, of which 1986's Gold Music is the most accessible. It’s the source of several tracks, including the cute but complex Why Should I Love You? and the psychedelic doowop prog-pop masterpiece Don't Let Me Go To The Dogs. The serpentine melodies and falsetto vocals betray the influence not just of Wilson but also Zappa, whose comedic cynicism informs Moore's own fiercely independent attitude." 4/5 The Independent "R Stevie Moore is 56. His father, Bob, played bass for Elvis. He has home-recorded more than 400 albums, mainly self-released in cassette and CD-R format. While Guided by Voices’ Robert Pollard and Jandek, similar lo-fi American auteurs, have found relative fame and acclaim, Moore still awaits discovery, perhaps via this compilation of his golden period (1974-86). Hidden among self-consciously strange experimental pieces are the likes of Cool Daddio, Oh Pat, Answers, Why Should I Love You? and Adult Tree, twitchily neurotic art-pop nuggets that compare with the finest work of XTC’s Andy Partridge and GameTheory’s Scott Miller." The View from the Edge
Released 18/05/09. The View from the Edge is about the rolke of percussion in modern music and is a sequel to el's previous Varese edition, The Complete Works of Edgard Varese Volume 1 (ACMEM125CD). An important restoration of the composer's earliest recordings, the edition was greeted by great critical enthusiasm and sold especially healthily on export.

Varese also has a strong base in America, mostly by virtue of the association with Frank Zappa, who for years championed the work of this genius who today is regarded now as "The Father Of Electronic Music”; a man that has been described as the Leonardo da Vinci of modern music

‘Arcana’ and ‘Ionisation’ are the composer's key works; two of the most important of the twentieth century. Leonard Bernstein's historic seventeen minute Arcana with The New York Philharmonic is amongst the rarest Varese recordings The American Percussion Society's vigorous recording of ‘Ionisation’ has been inexplicably out of print for five decades

The Oliver Messiaen pieces are his first official recordings ever, dating from 1946 & 1947, and orginally released on 78 by Pathe. Both are beautifully performed by a young Yvonne Loriod.

Songs On Page One
Released 16/03/09. There are many standard-issue personae to which an aspiring rock star might be drawn, but one has always been cooler, darker and sexier than all the rest. It is that of the artist who single-mindedly pursues his creative muse while embracing the full panoply of self-destructive, decadent, badboy behaviour: heavy drinking, frequent drug use, committed womanising, a general fuck-you attitude to both public and media, a casual disregard for society's sacred cows and taboos, and a self-belief bordering on the messianic. For three turbulent decades Serge Gainsbourg heroically exemplified all of the above - and much more.

He wrote and directed four controversial movies, he published a scurrilous novel, his records were often denounced as obscene and he was perpetually embroiled in scandal, whether for turning up drunk on a TV show and offering to f**k fellow guest Whitney Houston, recording a reggae version of Le Marseillaise, burning a 500 franc banknote on prime-time TV, or making a decidedly queasy video with his 13-year-old daughter Charlotte to promote their single, Lemon Incest. Summarising his approach to life and art, he said: "Without controversy it would all be very boring" and "For me, provocation is oxygen."

The EL edition comprises his shockingly brilliant debut album, a live track from the same period transmitted on Radio France and fine versions of songs from this momentous first album recorded with commercial success by Parisian comtemporaries Michèle Arnaud and Jean Claude Pascal Serge Gainsbourg has been one of, if not the, major single international influence on British and American independent pop music; Portishead, Franz Ferdinand, Tricky, Jarvis Cocker, Beck, Arcade Fire, Placebo, PJ Harvey, Brett Anderson, Mick Harvey, Momus and Belle and Sebastian have all claimed him as mentor In France, Gainsbourg is nothing less than an institution. As Jane Birkin put it recently: "Now French culture is talked of as before and after Serge."

Stella: Expanded Edition
Stella was the anti-yé-yé girl. France had never heard anything like her. A Parisian schoolgirl, she was an agent provocateur who lampooned jolly pop girl Sheila, lamented that France was in thrall to American archetypes, reconfigured Bob Dylan and satirised weekend trendies.

This expanded edition, first-ever reissue of the only album France’s Stella issued in the Sixties irresistibly captures all facets of who she was before she abandoned pop and began working with the jazz-influenced band Magma in the 1970s, whose Christian Vander she would marry. Without Stella, it is impossible to understand who Stella Vander is.

She laid the table for the raspberry-blowing musical cheek of Jacques Dutronc and echoed Serge Gainsbourg’s raised eyebrows. Her records were fantastic – pop art-style cut-ups, inside-out psychedelia, wonky soul and rough-edged garage rock. Stella took on French pop and made it her own.

RPM International’s latest journey to France, the expanded edition of Stella, follows definitive releases by Antoine, Jacques Dutronc, Emily, France Gall, Chantal Goya, Johnny Hallyday, Pussy Cat and Sylvie Vartan. RPM International is the authoritative home of the greatest music from France’s past.

Please Note: This title is released 19th January 2015 and will not be dispatched until this date.
