The Story So Far - Mo-Dettes

The Story So Far
Released 27/11/08. The Mo-dettes were NEVER a Mod band can we just clear that up? Instead, they were formed as part of the punk explosion, with former members having been part of the London squat community, numbering Joe Strummer and Sid Vicious among their housemates. Indeed, the genesis of the band came about while drummer June Miles-Kingston and guitarist Kate Corris were assisting Malcolm McLaren and Julien Temple on the set of The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle. All this and more is explored in the accompanying booklet, in which both Kate and June talk at length about their time with the Mo-dettes. So we get the inside story on encountering rednecks in the American south, facing equally patronising attitudes in the studio and finally, what to do when your roadie wants to date your singer. The band also featured Jane Crockford on bass famous for the punk cannibalism incident when she bit the ear of Shane McGowan at a Clash gig and Swiss singer Ramona.

Flying Lizards / Fourth Wall
A welcome reissue of the two key Flying Lizards albums, innovative Pop Electronica from the early 1980’s Founded in 1978 by avant-garde composer and producer David Cunningham as an experimental pop band, The Flying Lizards rode the crest of the New Wave peaking with the international hit single Money. First album players included sound stylists in their own right David Toop and Steve Beresford, with vocals from Vivien Goldman. This also included the first two singles made by Cunningham, Summertime Blues and Money with monotone vocals by his art school colleague Deborah Evans, recorded before the album. On the second album Cunningham was even more experimental and brought in contributions from Michael Nyman and Robert Fripp, plus vocals by Patti Palladin. Less successful commercially but more highly rated critically at the time. The music Cunningham created follows after Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream, helping pave the way for the employment of electronica in later UK pop music with the likes of Stereolab, St Etienne and Portishead. Pop Said
The Darling Buds were part of a strange indie phenomena in the late 1980’s – guitar bands with blonde female lead singers (along with The Primitives & Transvision Vamp).
Originally from South Wales, the band released one self-financed single and were picked up by indie label Native. After two further singles they were signed by Sony imprint Epic and in the January 1989 released their debut long-player "Pop Said” which reached No 23 in the National album charts.
The album contains the four hit singles ‘Let’s Go Round There’, ‘Burst’, ‘Hit The Ground’ and ‘You’ve Got To Choose’.
Now reissued and fully expanded by nine tracks to include all of the B-sides from the singles. The accompanying booklet includes thoughts from the band today looking back at the release, alongside sleeve images and effects from their personal archive.

If You Could Read My Mind
Viola Wills was originally a session vocalist on sides that Barry White produced for Bob Keane's Bronco/Mustang labels. In 1965, White signed Wills to Bronco as a solo artist. She recorded several sides for the label; all failed to chart. It would take another decade before Viola would chart a hit.
In 1979, while signed to the Ariola/Hansa label, Wills enjoyed her biggest hit with a disco version of Patience and Prudence's 1957 hit ‘GONNA GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU NOW.’ Recording in an up-tempo Disco/Hi-NRG style, Wills scored dancefloor hits with Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND’ and Carole King & Gerry Goffin’s ‘UP ON THE ROOF.’ IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND became her first Ariola album release in 1980.
Cherry Pop is proud to release the first ever CD version of Viola’s album IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND expertly remastered and complete with liner notes and bonus tracks. It is essential listening for all Hi-NRG, Disco and ‘80s Pop fans out there!
