Reel Life: Deluxe Edition - Boy Meets Girl

Reel Life: Deluxe Edition
Boy Meets Girl is an American pop-music duo consisting of keyboardist and vocalist George Merrill and singer Shannon Rubicam. They are perhaps best known for their hit song ‘Waiting for a Star to Fall’  and for writing two number one hits ‘How Will I Know’ and ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ performed by Whitney Houston.

The group released their second album, Reel Life, which featured the single ‘Waiting for a Star to Fall’in 1988.  With this selection, after years of writing and composing songs for other artists, the duo earned mainstream success in their own right. In the United States, ‘Waiting For a Star to Fall’ peaked at #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song reached #9 in the UK and was also a top ten Australian hit in April 1989. It was featured in the movie Three Men and a Little Lady.

Reportedly, the song was inspired by an actual falling star that Merrill and Rubicam had seen at one of Whitney Houston's concerts at the Greek Theatre. The duo submitted the song to Houston for consideration on her next album, but her producer at the time, Clive Davis, rejected it. The song was also recorded by Belinda Carlisle for her 1987 release Heaven On Earth at the insistence of her label. But Carlisle disliked the song, and she ultimately refused to include it on the album,

Flying Again / Airborne
To many people, the mere mention of West Coast country rockers The Flying Burrito Brothers evokes memories of the talismanic Gram Parsons, continuing to live out hisAmerican cosmic music dream. True, Parson’s brief tenure with the band fell in between his even shorter time with The Byrds and his sadly equally short-lived solo career. But as these two Flying Burrito Brothers albums, along with a career that lasted even into the new Millennium, there’s a lot more to the Flying Burritos than Gram Parsons. When Gram Parsons died in September 1973, the legend surrounding his death led to increased interest in his musical legacy. A&M, keen to cashin, released the compilation album Close Up The Honky Tonks in 1974. This in turn prompted band members Ethridge and Kleinow to revive The Flying Burrito Brothers, this time with ex-Byrds guitarist Gene Parsons and country musicians Floyd Gib Guilbeau and Joel Scott Hill. The new-look band signed to Columbia Records, and released Flying Again , the first of these two albums in 1975. It ‘s a perfect example of the way country rock music had developed since The Byrds broke new ground with Sweetheart Of The Rodeo through to the manner in which the likes of the Eagles and Jackson Browne were now beginning to command American airwaves. Megaton
A thrilling, no-holds-barred, heavy rock treatment
of a clutch of riff-based but fairly commercial pop tunes,
Megaton'ssole album has plenty of admirers these days. Perhaps
this should be a rock label staple, but the LPs origins are more pop
than that with more akin to those ranks of over looked production
library classics recorded for one purpose and taking on a different
guise and importance to collectors years later. For Megaton is
the creative inspiration of vocal harmony leader Les Humphries (as in
The Les Humphries Singers, big hit makers in early 70'sGermany) and his
writing partner/right hand LHS man, Jimmy Bilsbury. Perhaps
having the likes of future Uriah Heep vocalist John Lawton in the midst
of the LHS was an inspiration, but whatever, Humphries nose for a
commercial opportunity sniffed out the Free, Led Zep hard rock/ blues
rock market and he duly delivered. A 1971 Deram release, first in
Germany, other territories later inc. South America, and the UK -where
today such a pressing can set you back over £700 ! RPM presents
it'sfirst legitimate reissue on CD.

Hollywood Party Tonight (Expanded Edition)
ODYSSEY started life as The Lopez Singers, a female vocal group from Connecticut, in 1968. The original line up was the three Lopez sisters Carmen, Lillian and Louise, however Carmen left soon after and was replaced by Filipino singer and bassist Tony Reynolds. It was this line-up which went on to have worldwide success with the hit single ‘Native New Yorker’ in 1977, taken from their debut self-titled LP "Odyssey," which was the first of their albums to be re-issued by BBR.

HOLLYWOOD PARTY TONIGHT was the follow up to their successful debut and was originally released in 1978. By this point Tony Reynolds had left the fold to be replaced by Billy McEachern, who helped the group take their sophomore LP to #72 on the US R&B album chart and #123 on the Billboard 200. Despite this line-up change the group maintained their soft, laid back style of soul-pop with inflections of jazz and Caribbean sounds to greater depths than on their debut LP.

Stand out tracks on HOLLYWOOD PARTY TONIGHT are the singles ‘Single Again/What Time Does The Balloon Go Up,’ and ‘Lucky Star,’ of which both are represented here in their single mixes as bonus tracks. Other great tracks that show the depth of styles on the LP are ‘Hey Bill,’ ‘You Wouldn't Know A Real Love If It Walked Right Up, Kissed You On The Cheek And Said Hello Baby’ and ‘Pride.’

BBR is very proud to bring you the first ever CD release anywhere in the world of HOLLYWOOD PARTY TONIGHT, completely remastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and bonus content. HOLLYWOOD PARTY TONIGHT is an essential purchase for all R&B, Soul, Pop and Disco fans out there!
