If You Could Read My Mind - Viola Wills

If You Could Read My Mind
Viola Wills was originally a session vocalist on sides that Barry White produced for Bob Keane's Bronco/Mustang labels. In 1965, White signed Wills to Bronco as a solo artist. She recorded several sides for the label; all failed to chart. It would take another decade before Viola would chart a hit.
In 1979, while signed to the Ariola/Hansa label, Wills enjoyed her biggest hit with a disco version of Patience and Prudence's 1957 hit ‘GONNA GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU NOW.’ Recording in an up-tempo Disco/Hi-NRG style, Wills scored dancefloor hits with Gordon Lightfoot’s ‘IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND’ and Carole King & Gerry Goffin’s ‘UP ON THE ROOF.’ IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND became her first Ariola album release in 1980.
Cherry Pop is proud to release the first ever CD version of Viola’s album IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND expertly remastered and complete with liner notes and bonus tracks. It is essential listening for all Hi-NRG, Disco and ‘80s Pop fans out there!

Nona Hendryx

Released on 27/09/10. Nona Hendryx was one third of the pop/soul act LaBelle, and by far and away made the hippest solo records of any of the other members of the group, Patti LaBelle and Sarah Dash.

After LaBelle called it quits in 1976. Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock.

Wearing skin tight pants, black leather and brandishing a Bowie knife on the LP cover she announced her intentions loud and clear but neither record company or radio at that time knew what to do with this African American woman with a huge voice comfortable and capable of singing hard rock as well as soul music.

Nona worked with Talking Heads as back-up singer and fell in with a hip crowd of musicians and her association with David Byrne led to her working with Bill Laswell who helped her put together her second solo album. Entitled NONA it sparked greater interest in Nona s considerable talents and her solo career flourished.

Patti Labelle- Expanded Edition

With a career spanning more than 4 decades and numerous appearances in the charts and the music award circuit, Grammy Hall Of Fame inductee, Patti LaBelle sealed her fate as one of the great American Divas.

Patti LaBelle started singing at church and later formed Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles, later know as LaBelle. Patti and her group enjoyed many chart hits during their 15 years together including their number one, gold selling single Lady Marmalade. 1977 brought the split of LaBelle and with that Patti embarked on her solo career with Epic Records. Her self-titled, debut solo album, produced by the legendary David Rubinson, soared to #16 in the R&B charts and gained a top 100 spot in the pop charts reaching #62.

Patti LaBelle’s incredible vocal talent is easily evident on the track You Are My Friend, Cowritten by Patti and dedicated to her son, a song which she still performs to this day and is a firm fan favourite. Patti Labelle also features her top 40 R&B single, the string-laden upbeat, Joy To Have Your Love and the funk guitar driven cover of, Funky Music (Sho Nuff Turn’s Me On).

Three D
Little can be said about The Sound Of Philadelphia or Philadelphia International Records without mentioning The Three Degrees. This trio may have had more than 12 different women represent the group so far, but they remain one of the most memorable female vocal acts of the last 40+ years.

In 1979, The Three Degrees released their second album for Ariola Records, 3D, produced by Grammy Award winner Giorgio Moroder fresh from winning an Academy Award for his full movie score on Midnight Express and fellow Grammy Award and Academy Award winner Harold Faltermeyer. The album featured such hits as the fantastic driving beat of the US Dance hits JUMP THE GUN and SET ME FREE and a UK Top Ten hit, the hugely popular sweet and soulful, MY SIMPLE HEART. Other notable singles include the gorgeous funky Earth, Wind & Fire inspired ballad STARLIGHT and WITHOUT YOU.

BBR is proud to present this newly re-mastered and beautifully re-packaged expanded edition of THREE D, complete with extensive liner notes featuring interviews with group members and Ariola Records President Robin Blanchflower along with added bonus tracks. Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases, this BBR Re-Master is a must have for all Soul, Disco and Girl-Group Pop fans.

DonÆt Let It Die - Very Best Of

A legend in the industry and a performer of a number of hits in his own right. Don’t Let it Die was a massive hit and won him an Ivor Novello award, this after The Beatles may or may not have turned it down because it was a little too complicated for Ringo to sing. His style was varied, from the vaudeville of his youth to more contemporary influences of the late 60’s and early 70’s. This compilation brings together his first two albums Don’t Let it Die and Hurricane Smith and includes the singles Don t Let it Die , Oh Babe What Would You Say?, Who Was It? and My Mother Was Her Name . The Shacklefords Sing
Released 24/11/08. This phenomenon probably should be filed under forgotten enigmas of the '60s. The crudely rendered Lichtensteinesque comic strip on the album cover tries to help out by explaining that The Shacklefords consist of three men and a girl, they like to be perceived as a sound rather than a group, and they don't want to be confused with Norwegian fjords. Right. OK. The Shacklefords are kind of like The Art of Noise avant la lettre; there's a mystifying aura regarding the lineup of the band, and exactly what it's all about. Perhaps The Shacklefords would have remained forgotten if it hadn't been for the renewed appreciation of their producer, the amazing Lee Hazlewood. Helmed by Hazlewood's associate, the prolific Marty Cooper (an American pop missing link involved with everyone from Jennifer Warnes to Them!), The Shacklefords sounds is a missing link in American vocal groups. These "adventures in song with Capitol's super singing group," thankfully offer more than just another rarity for Hazlewood addicts. The marvelous Shacklefords sound is a treat for collectors of the unknown and the under-appreciated. A treat for fans of 1960's vocal groups, and a key piece in the legend and enigma of Lee Hazlewood. Our Price: £9.95
