Britain's most successful-ever homegrown reggae band, formed in Birmingham in 1978, and named after the unemployment benefit form with which most of its members were familiar. Initial line-up was Ali Campbell (vocals & guitar), Robin Campbell (guitar), Mickey Virtue (keyboards), Brian Travers (sax), Earl Falconer (bass), Norman Hassan (percussion), Jim Brown (drums) and Astro (reggae toaster).

THE UK SUBS

London-based rowdy, boozy punk band formed in 1976 by former R&B singer Charlie Harper, with Nicky Garrett (guitar), Paul Slack (bass) and Pete Davies (drums). Signed to the Gem label in the late 70s, they had several national chart entries. Later, the line-up changed frequently, but the band endured - Harper still leads a working, touring version.

THE UNDERTONES

Derry-based punk/pop quintet formed in 1977, distinguished by their melodic, commercial songs, and the distinctive vocals of lead singer Feargal Sharkey. Other members were John O'Neill (guitar), Damian O'Neill (guitar), Michael Bradley (bass) and Billy Doherty (drums). They split in 1983, the O'Neill brothers forming That Petrol Emotion and Sharkey going solo (he also later became an A&R man for Polydor.)
