Turnin' On: Expanded Edition - High Inergy

Turnin' On: Expanded Edition
•    HIGH INERGY were an R&B and Soul girl group from Pasadena, Ca. who signed with Berry Gordy's legendary Motown Records on his self-named Gordy subsidiary in 1977 and went on to have a strong career chalking up nine R&B hits and recording eight albums.

•    Discovered by Berry Gordy's sister Gwen Gordy Fuqua the group consisted of singing sisters Vernessa and Barbara Mitchell, both blessed with stunning soul voices, alongside Linda Howard and Michelle Martin who were primarily dancers. Modelled on Motown's successful girl groups they were named after The Supremes 1976 album "High Energy.”

•    TURNIN' ON was the group’s debut album released in 1977 and they hit the ground running with immediate chart success reaching #6 R&B and #28 Pop. The album was bolstered by the success of the first single ‘You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On),’ a lush, mid-tempo, beautifully sung and orchestrated, sensual groove which ticks all the boxes of classic mid-seventies smooth soul, peaked at #2 R&B and #12 Pop. Follow up single and opening track ‘Love Is All You Need,’ a dynamic funky work out which adds arresting harmonies and chopping clavinet to the group’s soundscape, returned them to the R&B Top 20.

•    Stand out album cuts on this impressive debut are the feel good dance floor numbers ‘Some Kinda Magic’ and ‘Could This Be Love,’ tougher R&B cuts like ‘Searchin' (I've Got To Find My Love)’ and ‘High School,’ and the breezy ballad ‘Let Me Get Close To You.’

•    BBR is very proud to present the international CD debut of TURNIN' ON, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. TURNIN' ON is essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Pop and Disco fans.

Discotheque
HERBIE MANN (born Herbert Jay Solomon) was one of Jazz music’s most prolific performers and innovators excelling predominantly on flute, but also tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet. Throughout the 50’s and 60’s Mann played in many groups exploring the boundaries of Jazz by absorbing Afro-Latin themes and recording and touring throughout the world. During this time he was able to nurture some of the greatest Jazz musicians as his sidemen, most notably Willie Bobo, Chick Corea, Roy Ayers and David Newman.
In the 70’s Mann extended his repertoire further by incorporating rock, pop, reggae and disco into his sound, which included this 1975 offering on Atlantic Records, DISCOTHEQUE. The album boasts a number of great jazzy grooves that show off Mann’s incredible dexterity on the flute and employs his vast experience to its full extent. DISCOTHEQUE was received very well in Jazz, R&B, Pop and Disco markets on its release achieving #5, #19 and #27 on the Billboard Jazz, R&B and Pop album charts respectively.
The albums one and only single was an instrumental cover of ‘Hi-Jack,’ which was originally recorded by Latin influenced Funk group Barrabas in 1974, and again confirmed the wide appeal that Mann enjoyed as it charted at #14 Pop, #24 R&B and an incredible #1 on Billboards Disco Action chart as the track lit up dance floors across the USA. Other notable tracks are the self-penned ‘High Above The Andes,’ showing off Mann’s love of the Latin groove, and a gorgeous rendition of Stevie Wonders ‘Bird Of Beauty.’ This edition also features the non-album B-side ‘Orient Express’ and the original unedited version of ‘Hi-Jack’.
BBR is very proud to bring you DISCOTHEQUE, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content. DISCOTHEQUE is a must have for all (Latin) Jazz, Funk and Dance/Disco fans out there!

Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition)
THE HUES CORPORATION was a soul trio formed in 1969 in Santa Monica, California by band mates St. Clair Lee, Fleming Williams and Hubert Ann Kelley. Their first break came in 1972 with the Blaxploitation film, Blacula, in which they made a small appearance, in addition to recording three songs for the soundtrack.  It was shortly following this that they were signed to RCA where they released their debut album, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION, now making its international CD debut on BBR!

The Allen Toussaint penned, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION - beautifully arranged by Gene Page at the height of his success with Barry White - was The Hues Corporation's first RCA single. The timely, socially conscious message in the song, with its anthemic quality, was a worthy introduction of The Hues Corporation to the American public, as it peaked at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Keen to illustrate the versatility of their new signing, RCA decided to issue the more light-hearted and pop orientated, MIRACLE MAKER (SWEET SOUL SHAKER) as the bands second single. The song was penned by legendary Brill Building songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and seemed destined to take on the top 40, however, unbeknownst to RCA it was another album cut that was creating a stir in a new bubbling underground scene that was poised to spread across the world from New York City.

Penned by Waldo T. Holmes, ROCK THE BOAT was one of the key tracks selected by underground DJs in New York’s burgeoning early disco scene and when RCA execs learned of this, promotions of the previous single were abandoned, and ROCK THE BOAT was rush released as the albums third single in February of 1974. ROCK THE BOAT rose to an impressive #3 on the R&B charts while doing even better on the Hot 100, becoming the first record of the Disco era to top the charts. Despite the popular success of the singles, the album takes inspiration from some of the best vocal groups of the time including The 5th Dimension and The Undisputed Truth, showcasing the true variation of musical styles contained within

BBR is proud to present this fully expanded edition of THE HUES CORPORATION – FREEDOM FOR THE STALION complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and added bonus content, making this a must have for all R&B, Disco, Funk and Soul fans out there!
