Down To Love Town: Expanded Edition - Originals (The)

Down To Love Town: Expanded Edition
•    Formed in 1966, THE ORIGINALS worked as studio backup singers at Motown and featured on tracks such as ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ by Jimmy Ruffin, ‘For Once In My Life’ by Stevie Wonder and Edwin Starr’s politically fuelled jam, ‘War.’ The original Originals were made up of four singers, the group's baritone and founder Walter Gaines, tenors Hank Dixon and C.P. Spencer (an original member of The Spinners) and also bass singer, Freddie Gorman, who was one of the writers of ‘Please Mr. Postman.’ In the late 60s, under the guidance and writing expertise of Al Green, The Originals scored two of their biggest hits early in their career with ‘Baby I'm For Real’ and the Gold certified, ‘The Bells.’

•    DOWN TO LOVE TOWN was the groups eighth album for Motown and was released in 1977. Produced by Michael Sutton and the Originals The album opens with intent on the horn and wah-wah led Disco/Soul stomper ‘Hurry Up And Wait’ before making way for the title track and only single from the album. ‘Down To Love Town’ (Disco #1/Pop #47) was originally included on their 1976 album Communique and became a true Disco classic with an incredible and impassioned lead vocal from Freddy Gorman's tenor/baritone, as he demands everybody join him in ‘Love Town,’ while the interplay between the guitar, strings and percussion keep you on the crest of the wave for the full six minutes of this 12” remix.  Other standouts include the smooth up-tempo groover ‘You Are A Blessing To Me’ and the passionate ballad ‘Sunrise.’

•    Following on from their reissue of The Originals Lamont Dozier produced 1975 album "California Sunset,” (CDBBR0044) BBR are proud to present DOWN TO LOVE TOWN, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Disco fans.

My Melody- Expanded Edition
Deniece Williams first made an impression as part of Stevie Wonder's back-up trio WONDERLOVE in the early seventies.

In 1976 she released her debut album, This Is Niecy, which featured the mega-hit FREE which topped the UK chart. Her sophomore set, Song Bird followed in 1977. Deniece then enjoyed an international smash hit in the form of, Too Much, Too Little, Too Late with Johnny Mathis. When Love Comes Calling appeared in 1979 and saw Deniece embracing the Disco movement.

In 1981, Deniece Williams changed her style again when she released MY MELODY, which was to feature the production of Philly Soul legend, Thom Bell. Bell returned Deniece to the popular jazz soul settings previously heard on This Is Neicy and has been referred to by Deniece herself as one of her favourite albums.

Featured tracks include the hit single, WHAT TWO CAN DO which secured a top 20 R&B chart spot, IT‘S YOUR CONSCIENCE as well as SILLY which became a huge radio hit and a signature song for Deniece Williams and is still played constantly on Quiet Storm stations today.

Showcase / New Horizons
Los Angeles-based family group The Sylvers - four of whom had performed as The Little Angels on shows with Johnny Mathis and Ray Charles - had already experienced a measure of chart success in the U.S. with three albums and four R&B singles for MGM/Pride Records between 1972-1974 when they signed with Capitol Records in 1975.
The nine-member team consisted of Olympia, Leon, Charmaine, James, Edmund, Ricky, Angie, Pat and Foster teamed up with former Motown producer/songwriter Freddie Perren who had worked with The Jackson Five among others to work on their label debut SHOWCASE.
The result was immediate success: the first single, the now-classic ‘Boogie Fever’ reached No. 1 on the U.S. pop and R&B charts. The follow-up ‘Cotton Candy’ became another Top 20 R&B hit and with four tracks written by Leon, SHOWCASE became a Top 60 pop and Top 30 R&B best-seller.
The 1976 follow-up LP, Something Special spawned the hit single, "Hot Line”; in 1977, the group (now seven in number with the departure of Olympia and Charmaine) wrote and produced their third Capitol set, NEW HORIZONS with Leon (who would go on to have major success as a producer working with The Whispers, Shalamar and Lakeside among others) writing or co-writing most of the tracks including the Top 20 R&B hit, ‘Any Way You Want Me.’
Both albums are making their worldwide CD debut with this release which includes liner notes by renowned US writer Rico Washington.

The Buddah Years
Eighteen years after her passing in 1995, soulful songstress Phyllis Hyman remains one of most appreciated and loved singers of her time. SoulMusic Records pays tribute to the distinctive vocalist with a third release following the 2013 reissues of two of her Arista albums, 1979’s SOMEWHERE IN MY LIFETIME (SMCR-5092) and 1983’s GODDESS OF LOVE (SMCR-5095) with a collection that focuses on her recordings for Buddah Records (1977-1978).
Incorporating her self-titled 1977 LP debut (available on CD for the first time in its entirety in many years), THE BUDDAH YEARS also includes the dance-flavoured "You’re The One,” a track left off the original album, and three songs – ‘Soon Come Again,’ ‘Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)’ and ‘The Answer Is You’ - recorded for Buddah, originally released on the 1978 non-US LP, ‘Sing A Song’ and then included on her 1979 US Arista debut.
With production by Jerry Peters, John Davis and the team of Larry Alexander (her then-husband) and Sandy Torano, the "Phyllis Hyman album” showcased the songbird’s ability to fuse pop, soul and jazz. Highlights included a beautiful reinterpretation of "I Don’t Want To Lose You,” (originally recorded by The Spinners), songwriter / producer Thom Bell’s ‘Loving You, Losing You,’ (a Top 40 R&B and dance hit single) and the Hyman fan favourite, ‘The Night Bird Gets The Love.’
Liner notes by renowned U.S. writer Rashod Ollison include quotes from producer John Davis and arranger Onaje Allan Gumbs.

With the "Bird” soon dropped from the acts name ‘Save Me’ became an international Disco hit heralding the start of continued success throughout the 70's.

•    GET UP AND BOOGIE was the group’s second album released in 1976 and capitalized on the success of their debut, which is also available on BBR.
