Platinum Hook: Expanded Edition - Platinum Hook

Platinum Hook: Expanded Edition
•    PLATINUM HOOK was a slick R&B/Funk combo who released three albums on Motown between 1978 and 1983. Having signed to the label for their debut eponymous release in 1978, PLATINUM HOOK offered up a smooth and engaging R&B/Funk sound that more than matched their label mates and other rivals of the time.

•    Produced by keyboardist, songwriter and arranger Greg Wright, a mainstay of the Motown organization through the 70's having worked with Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Thelma Houston, Switch and Jermaine Jackson, PLATINUM HOOK's debut is an album of great depth and variety proving that the polished and professional studio tricks of the time still left room for plenty of grit.

•    PLATINUM HOOK opens with the tight club groove ‘Bittersweet,’ a horn and synth led track that introduces the groups lead vocalists Tina Renee Stanford and Stephen Daniels to blistering effect. Track 2 is an excellent cover of Shotgun's mid-tempo funk jam from the previous year, "Hotline.” ‘'Til I Met You’ and ‘Lover What You've Done (To Me)’ are both smooth soul ballads that still bring the funk into the rhythms and help round out the albums overall sound. ‘Standing On The Verge (Of Getting It On),’ a cover of the Funkadelic classic, can hold its head up high to the original. Both ‘Hooked For Life’ and ‘Gotta Find A Woman’ are soulful mid-tempo grooves with an emphasis on the slick harmonies. Closing track ‘City Life’ is a full on high-tempo Disco/Soul number leaving you breathless, but gasping for more.

•    BBR is very proud to present PLATINUM HOOK, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Disco fans.

Move Closer: Expanded Edition
•    PHYLLIS NELSON was an American R&B/Dance singer and songwriter from Gary, Indiana who found fame in the UK in the 1980's after recording and performing predominantly disco and dance music with modest success since the mid 1970's. Nelson first hit the charts in 1980 when her single ‘Stop The Rain’ reached #20 on Billboard's disco chart.

•    Inspired by her relationship with her husband, Nelson made a departure from her usual dance orientated material and penned a ballad, ‘Move Closer,’ which became the opening track and title of her debut album on Carrere Records. Released in the UK and Europe the album provided an immediate change in fortune for the versatile vocalist.

•    Released in 1984, MOVE CLOSER, which peaked at #29 on the UK album charts, is a soul record of broad scope with varying styles and boasts two beautiful ballads penned by the maturing vocalist herself. Also first released as a single in 1984, the dynamic and sensitively sung opening track, describing the frustration of being apart from your lover, was championed by a London radio DJ who set the track on a slow burn up the UK singles charts. ‘Move Closer’ reached the summit after 11 weeks, spent 6 months on the chart and made history as the first UK #1 single to be both written and performed by a black female artist.

•    MOVE CLOSER also includes single ‘Stop Don't Do This To Me,’ a slick, minimal R&B groove, and the sweet soul ballad ‘Happy To See You,’ the second track written by Nelson.

•    BBR is very proud to present MOVE CLOSER, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Disco, Dance and Pop fans.

For The First Time: Expanded Edition
CLASSIC MOTOWN ON BIG BREAK RECORDS

•    Stephanie Mills was a native New Yorker having been born and brought up in the borough of Brooklyn. She first tasted success as a singer at the age of 9, winning the famed Apollo Theatre's amateur hour several weeks in a row, which opened the doors to Broadway as a cast member in "Maggie Flynn” and as opening act for The Isley Brothers. Mills big break came in 1975 when she landed the lead role of Dorothy in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical "The Wiz,” based on The Wizard Of Oz. Jermaine Jackson was suitably impressed and was instrumental in helping her get signed to Motown Records to record her second album after "Movin' In The Right Direction” on ABC records in 1974.

•    FOR THE FIRST TIME saw Mills team up with legendary song writing, arranging and production duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David, ironically for the last time they would work on the same project together. Given the medium in which she came to prominence the classic standards of Bacharach and David were perfectly suited to Mills theatrical voice as she performs the collection with effortless ease, running the full gamut of emotions alongside the understated and beautifully orchestrated contemporary arrangements. Mills talents come to the fore on tracks such as ‘I Took My Strength From You,’ ‘No One Remembers My Name’ and the single ‘This Empty Place.’

•    Alongside FOR THE FIRST TIME Mills 1982 album ‘Love Has Lifted Me,’ (recordings from later Motown sessions that were held back) appears as the bonus tracks on this release. BBR is very proud to present FOR THE FIRST TIME, expertly remastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks.  Essential listening for all R&B, Soul, Pop and Quiet Storm fans.
