Spirit: Expanded Edition - Earth, Wind & Fire

Spirit: Expanded Edition
•    EARTH WIND & FIRE, due to Maurice White's untainted musical vision, are one of the most prominent "Pop” groups to emerge from the musical melting pot of the 1970's. Incorporating R&B, jazz, soul, funk, gospel, blues, rock and dance music into their repertoire, as well as very strong African and spiritual influences, EARTH, WIND & FIRE boast a succession of hit R&B and Pop singles and albums and are still producing high calibre music to this day. Classic tracks like "Shining Star,” "September,” "Boogie Wonderland,” "After The Love Has Gone” and "Let's Groove” have contributed to Maurice White and his cohorts stellar reputation among music fans.

•    SPIRIT, released in 1976, saw Maurice White embracing his spiritual side (hence the title) to a much greater degree. Regarded as one of the groups best albums (peaking at #2 R&B and Pop) SPIRIT gained multi-platinum sales and provided a wide range of song styles including the jazz-funk classic "Getaway” (R&B #1/Pop #12), and the funk/pop mid-tempo feel good grooves "Saturday Nite” (R&B #4/Pop #21/UK #17) and "On Your Face” (R&B #26). Throughout the album White's spiritual message and vision (part Afro-American Christianity, part Eastern philosophies) are present but never overbearing. The incredible ballad "Imagination” and the title track "Spirit,” both beautifully sung by EW&F vocalist of many years, Philip Bailey, exemplify the respectful, positive attitude and inclusiveness prevalent throughout the group’s career.

•    Having been a prominent session musician with Chess Records in the 60's White remained close with one of the labels most creative producers Charles Stepney, who became the main collaborator on many of the EW&F projects including SPIRIT. Sadly this was one of the last projects that the unique arranger/producer/session musician/multi-instrumentalist and songwriter worked on as he passed away in May of '76 aged only 45.

•    BBR is very proud to present SPIRIT, fully remastered and re-packaged complete with extensive liner notes, original artwork and extended bonus content including 2 tracks from the time that didn't appear on the original release as well as alternative versions of "Getaway,” Saturday Nite” and "Imagination.”

•    SPIRIT is essential listening for all R&B, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Gospel, Blues, Rock, Dance, Disco and Pop fans out there!

Tantalizing Colours: The Reprise Recordings
MC SQUARED—featuring folk renegades from The Back Porch Majority, as well as legendary studio musicians JIM KELTNER and RANDY STERLING—recorded four exciting singles for Reprise Records during 1967 and 1968.

Sounding like a unique hybrid of The Mamas and The Papas and Jefferson Airplane, the Los Angeles-based quintet failed to generate commercial success, and as a result their long-lost 1968 album has since been confined to the vaults...UNTIL NOW!  The CD contains their four Reprise singles—two of which were produced by LENNY WARONKER (Van Dyke Parks, Randy Newman, Beau Brummels)—as well as the material that was to comprise their debut LP, all sourced from the original master tapes!

Filled with brilliant harmonies and psychedelically experimental left turns, MC SQUARED will appeal to fans of Curt Boettcher, Eternity’s Children, and The Millennium/Ballroom.

The 16-page, full-colour booklet includes rare, previously-unpublished photos, and extensive liner notes featuring the participation of original band members.

Relight My Fire: Expanded Edition
Daniel Earl Hartman a.k.a. DAN HARTMAN was an American musician, singer, songwriter and producer who hailed from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is best known for his disco hits ‘Instant Replay,’ ‘Love Sensation’ and ‘Relight My Fire’ as well as penning the second biggest hit for the Edgar Winter Group, ‘Free Ride,’ of which he was a member. Having schooled himself playing bass and writing songs for his first band The Legends (which also included his brother Dave) Hartman joined the Edgar Winter Group and appeared on three of their albums before going solo in 1976.

After initially releasing the magnificently titled promotional album "Who Is Dan Hartman and Why is Everyone Saying Wonderful Things About Him?,” which was a retrospective on his career until that point, Hartman scored big in 1978 with the #1 Disco smash ‘Instant Replay’ (from the album of the same name) which also crossed over to the U.S. And U.K. Pop charts.

In 1979 Hartman released RELIGHT MY FIRE (R&B #67, Pop #169), and again hit the top of the Disco charts with the title track, a bonefide disco classic that featured Hartman's friend Loleatta Holloway on vocals and is preceded by the understated "Vertigo” which perfectly sets your anticipation before the main event.  ‘Relight My Fire’ was subsequently covered by U.K. boy band Take That featuring Lulu, who took their version to the top of the U.K. Pop charts in 1993.

Throughout the LP Hartman keeps the party energy in full flow and on the opener ‘Hands Down’ we are treated to Stevie Wonder and Edgar Winter trading licks on harmonica and sax respectively.  ‘Just For Fun’ has a very solid syncopated groove in contrast to the tone of the lyric and exemplifies Hartman's production style. On closer ‘Free Ride’ Hartman shows off his deft production skills by taking the hit he wrote for the Edgar Winter Group and changing the rhythmic emphasis to take the track firmly into the dance floor realm.

Hot Shot Records/BBR is proud to present RELIGHT MY FIRE. This expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with a foreword from mixer John Luongo, extensive liner notes and added bonus material.

This BBR/Hot Shot Records re-master is a must have for all Disco, Dance and Pop fans out there!
