Witch Doctor: Expanded Edition - Instant Funk

Witch Doctor: Expanded Edition
•    Instant Funk came out of New Jersey in the early seventies having started life as The Music Machine, performing as backing band for the likes of The Manhattans, Bunny Sigler and The TNJ's. The group moved to Philadelphia in 1976 to work on their own sound and released their first LP "Get Down With The Philly Jump” on the city’s famous TSOP imprint, now firmly under the wing of Bunny Sigler who produced the record. The following year Instant Funk backed Bunny Sigler on his Gold Mind/Salsoul release "Let Me Party With You” (CDBBR0249) paving the way for the groups eponymous debut on Salsoul in early 1979 (CDBBR0121) having perfected their marriage of Philly Soul/Disco and Heavy Funk.

•    WITCH DOCTOR (R&B #23/Pop #129), also released in 1979, came hot on the heels of the success of their first Salsoul offering capitalizing on tracks such as ‘I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)’ which hit the top spot on both the R&B and Disco charts. Bunny Sigler comes to the fore in the producers chair on WITCH DOCTOR, galvanizing the group to hit the heights on the full on funk tracks ‘Bodyshine’ (R&B #41/Pop #103), with Tee Scott's 12” Mix also included on this release, ‘Slap, Slap, Lickedy Lap,’ and the title track ‘Witch Doctor’ (R&B #35) which all exemplify the tightest of units at the top of their game grooving on the richest of party funk cuts. ‘Scream And Shout’ is another floor-filler while the ballad ‘I Had A Dream’ shows the band in a different light.

•    During their career Instant Funk also worked with the likes of the O’Jays, Archie Bell & the Drells, the Three Degrees, Dexter Wansell and Evelyn "Champagne” King, as well as releasing seven albums between 1976 and 1983.

•    This newly remastered edition of Instant Funk's WITCH DOCTOR comes complete with extensive liner notes and bonus content making this BBR Remaster a must have for all R&B, Funk, Soul, Disco and Philly Soul fans out there!

Between The Sea And The Sky
Imagine coming off the back of a defunct group, with no hits, but who have admittedly just released one of the best pop psych singles in the UK ever, and being thrown into George Martins Air Studios on a publishing/production deal and told there you are boys "make an album".

A slight license with the factual there but essentially this is what happened to Martin Briley and Brian Engel .In 1969, late of Mandrake Paddle Steamer and their classic 'Strange Walking Man', these late teens art students were given access to Air Studios and budgets for orchestras plus musicians to come up with hit singles. What they actually came up with was an almost concept album that exhibited all that had influenced them to that point, and let loose their humour and imagination. Sadly with the exception of one single ('Pale Green Vauxhall Driving Man') released under the name Prowler, a couple of years after the event, the recordings lay on the shelf, and are released for the first time now.

Briley played with GreAenslade and then as session guitarist with the Hunter Ronson band, Meatloaf and Ellen Foley. Three solo albums and a US top 40 hit 'Salt In My Tears' followed. He continues as a songwriter for international artists and backing vocalist.

United We Stand
In the beginning, Tony Hiller created The Brotherhood of Man. Formed in the recording studio and launched into a world at war over Vietnam, peace certainly won the day on vinyl in 1970 with the group‘s top ten single ‘United We Stand’ and accompanying album’s original sleeve notes announcing the groups arrival "with an eloquent and convincing plea to unite”.

The Brotherhood of Man would eventually win a very different war with a very different line-up in Europe at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976. A different time, place, sound. RPM’s collection, concentrates on their old testament with chief peacemakers Johnny Goodison, Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway, Hal Atkinson, Russell Stone and the brit girl sisterhood of Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie. Featuring the complete 1970 album now with corresponding non-album Asides and B-sides together with Sue and Sunny’s soulful Deram 45s from the same period. United We Stand unites the best session singers and songwriters of the late sixties and early seventies in total harmony with both their record buying public and the charts of the times.

Gravity
James Brown, also known as the Godfather of Soul and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, had a career that would put any others in the business to shame.  He worked tirelessly until his unfortunate demise on Christmas day in 2006 writing, recording and performing some of Soul and Funks true classics. He notched up an impressive seventeen R&B #1’s including It’s A Man’s Man’s World, I Got You (I Feel Good), Make It Funky and Super Bad.

GRAVITY was produced by Dan Hartman (Relight My Fire, Instant Replay, I Dream About You) in 1986 due to the phenomenal success of LIVING IN AMERICA from the soundtrack to Rocky VI.  This single gained the #4 spot in the Pop chart, #10 in the R&B and #5 in the UK.

GRAVITY, the follow up single reached #26 in the R&B chart as well as #93 in the Pop chart.  Also featured on this album is the James Brown classic TURN ME LOOSE, I’M DR. FEELGOOD which is a sure fire dancefloor filler.

HOW DO YOU STOP was the third single release and returned James to the R&B top 10.  It is a minor classic in Brown’s catalogue and was later covered by none other than Joni Mitchell on her 1994 album Turbulent Indigo.

Love Is The Message
MFSB (Mother Father Sister Brother) were the house band for Philadelpia International and worked closely with the production team of Gamble & Huff. They backed up groups such as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, the O’Jays, the Stylistics, the Spinners, Wilson Picket and Billy Paul.
MFSB’s second album LOVE IS THE MESSAGE was released in 1974 and reached R&B #1 and Pop #4.
T.S.O.P. (THE SOUND OF PHILADELPHIA) is probably known to most as the theme from Soul Train. It was a massive hit, featuring the Three Degrees, reaching R&B #1, Pop #1 and UK #22. It sold over one million copies.
The Single Version of LOVE IS THE MESSAGE, also featuring The Three Degrees, reached R&B #42 and Pop #85. It has also been sampled by the likes of EPMD and LL Cool J.
Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases, with two bonus tracks, LOVE IS THE MESSAGE is a must for all Funk fans out there!
