Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition) - Hues Corporation (The)

Freedom For The Stallion (Expanded Edition)
THE HUES CORPORATION was a soul trio formed in 1969 in Santa Monica, California by band mates St. Clair Lee, Fleming Williams and Hubert Ann Kelley. Their first break came in 1972 with the Blaxploitation film, Blacula, in which they made a small appearance, in addition to recording three songs for the soundtrack.  It was shortly following this that they were signed to RCA where they released their debut album, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION, now making its international CD debut on BBR!

The Allen Toussaint penned, FREEDOM FOR THE STALLION - beautifully arranged by Gene Page at the height of his success with Barry White - was The Hues Corporation's first RCA single. The timely, socially conscious message in the song, with its anthemic quality, was a worthy introduction of The Hues Corporation to the American public, as it peaked at #63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Keen to illustrate the versatility of their new signing, RCA decided to issue the more light-hearted and pop orientated, MIRACLE MAKER (SWEET SOUL SHAKER) as the bands second single. The song was penned by legendary Brill Building songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and seemed destined to take on the top 40, however, unbeknownst to RCA it was another album cut that was creating a stir in a new bubbling underground scene that was poised to spread across the world from New York City.

Penned by Waldo T. Holmes, ROCK THE BOAT was one of the key tracks selected by underground DJs in New York’s burgeoning early disco scene and when RCA execs learned of this, promotions of the previous single were abandoned, and ROCK THE BOAT was rush released as the albums third single in February of 1974. ROCK THE BOAT rose to an impressive #3 on the R&B charts while doing even better on the Hot 100, becoming the first record of the Disco era to top the charts. Despite the popular success of the singles, the album takes inspiration from some of the best vocal groups of the time including The 5th Dimension and The Undisputed Truth, showcasing the true variation of musical styles contained within

BBR is proud to present this fully expanded edition of THE HUES CORPORATION – FREEDOM FOR THE STALION complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and added bonus content, making this a must have for all R&B, Disco, Funk and Soul fans out there!

Open Sesame- Expanded Edition

Kool And The Gang needs no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 80s and have sold over 70 million albums world wide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as Summer Madness, Get Down On It, Celebration and who could forget that slammin funk monster that featured so heavily in Quentin Tarantino's cult flick - Pulp Ficton; Jungle Boogie. Kool & The Gang was started by two brothers, Robert Kool Bell and Ronald Bell along with five friends in 1964. After some time playing the growing Jersey City Jazz coffeehouse scene and spots like Café Wha? in New York City, performing alongside other yet-to-be famous talents of the time, Kool & The Gang were signed to Redd Coach Records in 1968 and a year later were recording for the small subsidiary label, De-Lite Records. The 1970s was a busy and fruitful decade for the group, with Kool & The Gang, releasing twelve studio albums, two live albums and appearing on numerous occasions across the charts. 1976 saw Ricky Westfield leave the group to form his own band, North East South West, and would also mark the end of collaborations between the original seven members of KOOL & THE GANG. Later that year the group released Open Sesame which features the up-tempo single Superband which gained a top 20 R&B chart spot and the title track which reached #6 R&B and #55 on the US pop charts and soared to #13 on the Dance chart and was later featured in the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever.

United We Stand
In the beginning, Tony Hiller created The Brotherhood of Man. Formed in the recording studio and launched into a world at war over Vietnam, peace certainly won the day on vinyl in 1970 with the group‘s top ten single ‘United We Stand’ and accompanying album’s original sleeve notes announcing the groups arrival "with an eloquent and convincing plea to unite”.

The Brotherhood of Man would eventually win a very different war with a very different line-up in Europe at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976. A different time, place, sound. RPM’s collection, concentrates on their old testament with chief peacemakers Johnny Goodison, Tony Burrows, Roger Greenaway, Hal Atkinson, Russell Stone and the brit girl sisterhood of Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie. Featuring the complete 1970 album now with corresponding non-album Asides and B-sides together with Sue and Sunny’s soulful Deram 45s from the same period. United We Stand unites the best session singers and songwriters of the late sixties and early seventies in total harmony with both their record buying public and the charts of the times.
