Happy Together (Expanded Edition) - Odyssey

Happy Together (Expanded Edition)
ODYSSEY started life as The Lopez Singers, a female vocal group from Connecticut, in 1968. The original line up was the three Lopez sisters Carmen, Lillian and Louise, however Carmen left soon after and was replaced by Filipino singer and bassist Tony Reynolds. It was this line-up which went on to have worldwide success with the hit single ‘Native New Yorker’ in 1977, taken from their debut self-titled LP "Odyssey," which was the first of their albums to be re-issued by BBR. In 1978 Reynolds was replaced by Billy McEachern  who gave the group a settled line up which was a springboard for their continued success on both sides of the Atlantic.

HAPPY TOGETHER was the groups fifth LP released in 1982, and followed on from 1981's "I Got The Melody,” 1980's "Hang Together” and 1978's "Hollywood Party Tonight,” all of which are now available on BBR.  By this point Odyssey had gained a strong following in the UK due to the success of these albums and in particular the singles ‘Use It Up And Wear It Out,’ from "Hang Together” and ‘Going Back To My Roots’ from "I Got The Melody.”

HAPPY TOGETHER (R&B #23/UK #21) features the smash classic single "Inside Out” which gave the group their highest performing single in the US since their debut ‘Native New Yorker,’ peaking at #12 R&B (Pop #104/Dance #22). ‘Inside Out’ also continued the group’s great success in the UK giving them their biggest hit (#3) since 1980's ‘Use It Up And Wear It Out’ hit the top spot. Further stand out tracks in this set are the singles ‘Together’ (written and co-produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of CHIC) and ‘Magic Touch’ (UK #41) which bookend this classic album.

BBR is very proud to bring the first ever CD release anywhere in the world of HAPPY TOGETHER, completely remastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes, interviews and bonus content. HAPPY TOGETHER is an essential purchase for all R&B, Soul, Disco and Pop fans out there!

‘Criminally ignored in their US homeland where their only top 40 hit was native New Yorker – Odyssey were more than one hit wonders in the UK, putting together a run of impressive an polished hits in the R&B/dance vein. Now remastered and expanded, Hang Together was the first of three consecutive albums by the group to crack top 40 her, and arguably the best. Music Week, May 2012

"Native New Yorker labelled them a disco act but producer Sandy Linzer widened the trio's appeal on this 1980 LP with Lillian Lopez's beautiful vocal on 'If You're Looking For A Way Out'". MOJO, September 2012

Naturally - Expanded edition
LEON HAYWOOD, who hailed from Houston, Texas, was a singer, songwriter , producer and pianist who is arguably best known in the USA for his crossover 1975 hit ‘I Want'a Do Something Freaky To You’ which has been sampled a multitude of times, most notably on Dr. Dre's ‘Nuthin' But A G Thang.’ Haywood had a long and varied career which included accompanying Guitar Slim on piano when he was still in his teens, as well as joining Sam Cooke's band as keyboardist until the singer passed away. During the 60's he released his own instrumental sides and singles as well as playing on R&B hits for short lived outfits such as The Packers and The Romeos. This period culminated in his first solo R&B hit ‘It's Got To Be Mellow’ which peaked at #21 in 1967 on Decca Records.

NATURALLY was Haywood's ninth studio album and was released in 1980 on 20th Century Fox Records, giving him his most successful release for many years with the LP peaking at #22 R&B and #92 Pop. Haywood was adept at appropriating the musician styles and trends of the day and NATURALLY exemplifies this skill as it stands up to, and in many instances surpasses many of his contemporaries at the time.

The opening track and first single, ‘Don't Push It, Don't Force It’ gave Haywood his biggest chart hit as it reached #2 R&B, #10 Disco and crossed over to #49 Pop, as well as #12 Pop in the U.K. The clean, crisp, funky tone of this mid-tempo groover locks you in from the opening bars and won't let go, setting the scene for the rest of the album. Second single ‘If You're Looking For A Night Of Fun (Look Past Me I'm Not The One)’ (R&B #67) is another incessantly solid and funky track with Haywood refreshingly looking to get to know his intended in body, mind and soul before gettin' it on. Other very notable tracks are ‘Daydream’ and the accusatory ‘Who You Been Giving It Up To.’

At this time Haywood also penned several songs for Carl Carlton's eponymous album including the smash hit ‘She's A Bad Mama Jama (She's Built, She's Stacked).’ Watch out for this album as a forthcoming release on BBR. · BBR is proud to release the first ever CD issue of NATURALLY, this fully remastered and repackaged edition comes with extensive liner notes and bonus content and is a must for all Funk, Soul and Disco fans out there!

Gwen McCrae: Expanded Edition
•    Gwen McCrae, a gutsy soul singer in the southern style and initially influenced by such leading lights of the soul world as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin, is known best for her 1975 R&B #1 ‘Rockin’ Chair’. Having married George ‘"Rock Your Baby” McCrae after a whirlwind romance in 1963 the couple became a vocal duo, ‘George & Gwen’ and were discovered by influential singer/producer Betty Wright in the late 60’s while performing extensively throughout South Florida. Betty Wright was able to help them get a recording deal at Henry Stones Alston imprint which led to a move to Columbia Records before going back to a different Henry Stone imprint, Cat. A succession of singles were released during this period with modest success until she hit the R&B #1 spot with the aforementioned ‘Rockin’ Chair’ in 1975 and followed it up with her debut LP of the same name. Gwen recorded several more albums for the Cat imprint with reasonable R&B chart success before teaming up again with Betty Wright who produced her final LP for the label, "Melody Of Life” (BBRCD0227), in 1979 before moving on to Atlantic Records.

•    GWEN McCRAE was the first of the singers 2 offerings for Atlantic and was released in 1981 to high acclaim. Opening track ‘Funky Sensation’ (R&B #22/Disco #15), penned and produced by Kenton Nix, as was the rest of the album, is a bone-fide dance classic despite its mid tempo pace. The funky, solid beat and infectious piano and bass groove grip you from the start before McCrae's unmistakeable raspy soulful tones direct you to the floor and ask you if you can feel her "Funky Sensation” while the low strings and chopping guitar hold you in the groove before the horns complete the picture. As she so aptly states we "ain't never had no funk like this before,” this is true dance floor dynamite. The same is essentially true for the follow up single ‘Poyson,’ another mid-tempo super solid funk groove that just won't let go as each element comes together to create a fever with McCrae’s incendiary vocals on top, there's no doubt this ‘Poyson’ gets in your veins. Other great tracks on this superb offering are the more soulful, uptempo ‘Have A Good Time’ and the excellent ‘Feel So Good.’

•    BBR is also proud to present a previously unreleased extended remix of the classic FUNKY SENSATION from 1981. This expanded and remastered edition of GWEN McCRAE comes complete with extensive liner notes, a new interview with Gwen McCrae and added bonus material. It is a must have for all Funk, Soul, R&B and Disco fans out there!
