Cuchi-Cuchi: Expanded Edition - Charo and the Salsoul Orchestra

Cuchi-Cuchi: Expanded Edition
Maria del Rosario Mercedes Pilar Martinez Molina Baeza, professionally known by her stage name CHARO, is a Spanish-American actress, singer, comedienne and flamenco guitarist who was  well known for her flamboyant style and her catchphrase "Cuchi-Cuchi.” Having married Latin superstar Xavier Cugat in 1966, who had taken Charo on as his protégé, this all round performer racked up a multitude of film and television appearances (alongside her musical career - she was voted Best Flamenco Guitarist twice in Guitar Player Magazine) throughout the 60's and 70's which helped to make her a household name in the U.S.A. Charo even had a spell headlining her own shows in Las Vegas.

In 1977 Charo released her first album, CUCHI-CUCHI, and could not have teamed up with a better group than The Salsoul Orchestra to realise this ambition. As the house band for Salsoul Records The Salsoul Orchestra had honed their skills over the previous few years recording many albums for established artists as well as releasing their own, mostly instrumental recordings, to high acclaim.

CUCHI-CUCHI opens with the single ‘Dance A Little Bit Closer.’ This track has all the hallmarks of a classic Salsoul groove with its solid mid-tempo percussive beat and strong interplay between the sweeping strings and horn phrases, while Charo's breathy vocal sits on top inviting everyone to get to know each other a little bit better on the dance floor. Title track ‘Cuchi-Cuchi’ is a much more up-tempo and intense affair with swelling strings and horns alongside deft guitar work and arresting drum breakdowns while Charo insists that we all want the same thing... Cuchi Cuchi. Other notable tracks are the excellent reinterpretation of The Rolling Stones ‘Let's Spend The Night Together’ which softens the tone and adds a sultry Latin strut to proceedings, and ‘You're Just The Right Size,’ a classic Salsoul groove with a great guitar hook and shimmering strings under the repeated phrase of the title.

BBR is proud to present CUCHI-CUCHI. This expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus material.

This BBR re-master is a must have for all R&B, Soul, Funk, Disco and Pop fans out there!

Back Stabbers
THE O'JAYS were formed by five high school friends in 1958 who after seeing Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers perform, were inspired to start a vocal group. They spent time on various labels and released some fairly successful singles on Imperial Records working with H.B. Barnum and also Gamble & Huff, who were working as a production team for Neptune Records. Neptune folded in 1971 leaving THE O'JAYS, now a trio, in somewhat of a limbo. Having already captured the attention of Gamble & Huff, THE O'JAYS became one of the first signings at the newly formed, now legendary, Philadelphia International Records. Back Stabbers, released in 1972, was the album that made THE O'JAYS a household name and begun a period of incredible success with Philadelphia International, giving them close to 30 singles in the charts including a string of #1 R&B hits helping them to become one the labels biggest group and also serving as a landmark of the classic Philly Soul sound.  The title track was chosen for the first single and reached #5 on the US Pop chart while giving THE O'JAYS a #1 R&B hit. LOVE TRAIN followed suit and duly hit the top spot on the R&B charts as well as clinching the #1 position on the US Pop Chart.  BBR is so very proud to present the first ever expanded edition of this iconic Philly Soul album. Back Stabbers has been lovingly-mastered and carefully repackaged in full-expanded form. Complete with extensive liner notes featuring interviews along with added bonus content.Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases this BBR Remaster is a must have for all Funk, R&B and Philly Soul fans out there! Gravity
James Brown, also known as the Godfather of Soul and the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, had a career that would put any others in the business to shame.  He worked tirelessly until his unfortunate demise on Christmas day in 2006 writing, recording and performing some of Soul and Funks true classics. He notched up an impressive seventeen R&B #1’s including It’s A Man’s Man’s World, I Got You (I Feel Good), Make It Funky and Super Bad.

GRAVITY was produced by Dan Hartman (Relight My Fire, Instant Replay, I Dream About You) in 1986 due to the phenomenal success of LIVING IN AMERICA from the soundtrack to Rocky VI.  This single gained the #4 spot in the Pop chart, #10 in the R&B and #5 in the UK.

GRAVITY, the follow up single reached #26 in the R&B chart as well as #93 in the Pop chart.  Also featured on this album is the James Brown classic TURN ME LOOSE, I’M DR. FEELGOOD which is a sure fire dancefloor filler.

HOW DO YOU STOP was the third single release and returned James to the R&B top 10.  It is a minor classic in Brown’s catalogue and was later covered by none other than Joni Mitchell on her 1994 album Turbulent Indigo.

KC and the sunshine band
KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND formed in 1973 in Miami, Florida. Their most well-known songs include their five US #1 hits GET DOWN TONIGHT, THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT), (SHAKE, SHAKE SHAKE) SHAKE YOUR BOOTY, I’M YOUR BOOGIE MAN and PLEASE DON’T GO. Their music has been played at every major sporting event in the world and has also featured in over 200 movies. They were the first band since the Beatles in 1964 to score four #1 Pop singles in one 12-month period.

KC & THE SUNSHINE BAND was their second album and was a triple platinum hit in the US upon its release. It was released in 1975, the same year KC won the American Music Award for Best R&B Artist.

GET DOWN TONIGHT was a smash hit upon it’s release, gaining the group the #1 spots in both the US and Canadian Pop chart as well as the R&B chart. The rare TOM MOULTON MIX of GET DOWN TONIGHT sees it’s debut CD appearance in the UK on this reissue.

THAT’S THE WAY (I LIKE IT) built on this success, matching the previous singles #1 positions but adding the Netherlands to the list. The single I GET LIFTED, a George McCrae cover, has been sampled by the likes of N.W.A., Janet Jackson, Notorious B.I.G., Dr. Dre, MC Shan, Afrika Bambaataa and Digital Underground.

Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases, with bonus tracks, K.C. & THE SUNSHINE BAND is a must for all Soul, Funk and Disco fans out there!

Press:-

"Driven along by Robert Johnson's funky drumming, a bunch of bobbling basslines, some joyously riffing horns and a succession of hooky chants dressed up as chorus, the idea was to put feet on dancefloors and a smile or two on some faces. Their best stuff - That's The Way I Like It, Get Down Tonight, I Get Lifted, and Boogie Shoes are all on this 1975 album". 3/5* (Chris Wells / Echoes - August 2012)
