Queen of the Night: Expanded Edition - Loleatta Holloway

Queen of the Night: Expanded Edition
Loleatta Holloway was a dance music legend. Her amazing vocal talents gained her the reputation as one of the premier vocalists of soul and dance music during the 70’s and 80’s. Holloway started her singing career with Queen of Gospel, Albertina Walker (and her Caravans) before striking out on her own. She released her first single "Rainbow ‘71” on the fledgling Apache label before moving to Aware to record her first two albums prior to her work with Gold Mind/Salsoul.

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT, released in 1978 on Gold Mind/Salsoul Records, was the follow up to her breakthrough LP for the label in 1976, simply titled "Loleatta” and re-united her with Salsoul stalwart Norman Harris who took on the production duties. With QUEEN OF THE NIGHT being the singers second LP for this disco dominated label it confirmed her transformation from Southern soul songstress to disco royalty.

Norman Harris' soaring arrangements and infectious rhythms, allied with Holloways powerful vocals ensured that QUEEN OF THE NIGHT would gain commercial as well as critical success.

Opening track ‘Catch Me On The Rebound,’ (R&B #92) with its fluid, funky bass line, chopping rhythms and sweeping strings sets the tone for the album. Along with the opener, ‘Mama Don't, Papa Won't’ and ‘I May Not Be There When You Want Me (But I'm Right On Time)’ were also huge club hits, collectively peaking at #9 on the disco charts and all represented on this release in extended form. However the greatest success from the album was Holloways stunning duet with Bunny Sigler, ‘Only You,’ which peaked at #11R&B and #87 Pop, giving the singer her biggest ever hit.

BBR is proud to present QUEEN OF THE NIGHT. This expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus material.

Strange fruit
Strange Fruit' is a great undiscovered work of the acoustic rock / classic rock genres, cited by some as a minor masterpiece. In the late 60's Gary Farr made the transition from leader of R&B outfit The T-Bones to a noted singer-songwriter. Recording an album for Marmalade Records, Farr then signed to CBS Records in 1970, recording this sole album for the label. Sessions featured contributions from RICHARD THOMPSON on lead guitar and leading lights of the underground MIGHTY BABY. Unavailable on CD for many years, 'Strange Fruit' is a record made by an often overlooked singer-songwriter made available once more by Esoteric Recordings and is certain to appeal to all who adore acoustic music both melancholic and uplifting. The reissue also features the first ever CD appearance of the single edit of 'Revolution of the Season'. Our Price: £10.95

Sound Of The Koto: The Music of Japan
·       During his lifetime, Kimio Eto was considered to be Japan's foremost master of the koto, the ancient 13-string instrument of his native land. He, like so many, was attracted to the koto by both its beautiful tonal qualities and remarkable versatility.

·       In his youth, Eto studied the koto under the great master Michio Miyagi with his first composition for the instrument, Omoide, being published at just seventeen years. Eto would prove to be a prolific composer and a musician of both feeling and unparallelled technical excellence. His virtuosity being all the more remarkable when it is realised that he was totally blind from the age of five.

·       The fine art developed through the ages in Japan has long been appreciated in the West. The style of a previously strange and mysterious culture is being increasingly integrated; literature, music, film, painting, architecture, manufacturing and food. But above all, the basic culture of Japan has remained, and one still finds the simplicity and awareness that has always been there: an insight born out of extreme sensitivity.

·       Koto music is part of Japan's ancient heritage and was first heard as court music. The composers of today are creating a new form of art with this classical music as a foundation.

·       Some of the truly outstanding performances of Kimio Eto have been gathered together to create this edition including a handful of extraordinarily lovely duets with the American jazz flautist Bud Shank.

Big Girls Don’t Cry (Expanded Edition)

THE WEATHER GIRLS were Martha Wash and Izora Rhodes. The duo started out in the gospel group NOW (News of the World) before becoming backup singers with Sylvester in the late seventies. They were then named TWO TONS OF FUN and had a run of Disco hits on the Fantasy label.

The group then signed with Columbia Records and changed their name to The Weather Girls in 1982. The newly named duo’s first single IT'S RAINING MEN was quickly a massive club hit in the US, topping the Dance/Disco chart in 1982. Their debut album SUCCESS featured the hit single and was a US chart hit. Despite only being a minor pop hit at home, IT’S RAINING MEN became an international hit and eventually made number 2 in the UK in 1984. Since then it has become a massive anthem.

1985 saw the second album release by the duo under the name, The Weather Girls. BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY is another very well crafted pop/dance record for the duo, the recording of which was guided by producers Hank Medress and Jeff Kent.

BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY provided the dance floor hit ‘No One Could Ever Love You More Than Me,’ which peaked at #26 on the US dance charts and is featured here in extended form. ‘Well-A-Wiggy’ also charted making a respectable #76 on the US R&B charts and #107 Pop. Other notable tracks are the title track itself and an interesting cover of Canned Heat’s ‘Down On The Corner.’

Cherry Pop is very proud to present BIG GIRLS DON’T CRY, expertly re-mastered and complete with liner notes and bonus tracks. It is essential listening for all Hi-NRG, Disco and ‘80s Pop fans out there!
