Salsoul (Expanded Edition) - Joe Bataan

Salsoul (Expanded Edition)
Joe Bataan was born and grew up in Spanish Harlem, New York, in the 103rd St and Lexington Avenue area of the city. It is argued that no recording artist has more genuine street cred than Joe Bataan, the originator of the New York Latin Soul style that paralleled Latin Boogaloo and anticipated disco, he decided to focus his considerable talents full time on his music in 1965 after being released from a short jail sentence as a youth. His musical experience had begun with street corner doo wop in the 1950s, and progressed through the years to include one of the first rap records to hit the charts, 1979's "Rap-O, Clap-O." In between these milestones, he recorded classic albums like Riot! And Saint Latin's Day Massacre on the Fania label, and Afrofilipino, which included one of the first New York disco hits, an instrumental version of Gil Scott-Heron's "The Bottle."

SALSOUL, which gave the record label its name, (Bataan co-founded the label with the Cayre brothers but soon relinquished his stake) and helped ignite the explosion of urban dance music was released on the Mericana label in 1973 to wide critical acclaim. SALSOUL is still as influential as ever and a cult rare groove album, as it was a prophetic statement at the time of its release. This album exemplifies Bataan’s visionary and culturally aware musical concept of Latin Soul fused with orchestral funk.

SALSOUL is drenched with infectious rhythms, passionate soul and Bataan’s gritty lyrics. Opener "Mi Nube” (My Cloud) sets the tone with propulsive rhythms, driving horns and great vocal phrasing and delivery. "Muchachu Ordinario” (Ordinary Guy) is a super smooth soulful strut which Bataan identified with strongly as he proclaimed himself to be just that, an ordinary guy from the streets. "Fin,” "Latin Strut” and "Aftershower Funk” are all uplifting instrumental workouts giving focus to deftly played chopping and/or wah-wah guitar and soaring flutes and horns amongst the rich assortment of Afro/Latin percussive grooves.

This newly remastered, expanded edition is an essential listen for all true music fans and comes packaged complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content making this BBR re-master of SALSOUL a must have for all R&B, Funk, Soul, Latin, Afro/Cuban, Disco, and  Salsoul fans out there!

MFSB
M.F.S.B. (Mother Father Sister Brother) was the house band for Philadelphia International Records and worked very closely with the production team of Gamble & Huff. They backed up groups such as Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The O’Jays, The Stylistics, The Spinners, Wilson Pickett and Billy Paul and are probably best known in their own right for providing the theme music for the legendary TV show Soul Train with ‘T.S.O.P. (The Sound Of Philadelphia)’. With the rise of the Philly soul sound at the beginning of the '70s, business was booming at GambleandHuff's Philadelphia International imprint and as a result M.F.S.B. were kept very busy in the studio providing backing for the aforementioned artists and leaving little time for the groups own recording sessions. It wasn’t until 1973 that the group had a chance to record material in its own name and released their self-titled debut album to high acclaim later that same year. MFSB features extended Funk-Soul-Jazz work-outs as on the seven-minute cover of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Freddie's Dead’ that opens the set. The group also re-interpreted Sly Stone's ‘Family Affair’ to great effect while emphasising the flute as the driving force for their version of their label mates The O’Jays ‘Back Stabbers’ R&B chart topper from the previous year. The lush Disco/Pop sounds that informed the majority of the group’s later recordings, both in their own right and as the PIR house band, are featured on the other notable tracks on the album, in particular "Poinciana" which also features jazz-blues piano and guitar interjecting the soaring strings. ‘Something For Nothing’ (sampled by Groove Armada) also fits that description with a beautiful string led section that leads to an incredible motif on the horns which blasts through at just the right time, propelling the track forward. BBR is very proud to present MFSB, fully re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks. MFSB is a must for all R&B, Soul, Funk and Jazz fans out there!

Born To Love
When Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack teamed up in 1983 to record the Capitol album BORN TO LOVE, the pair had already experienced success as a duo thanks to the 1980 LP, Live & More (a Top 10 R&B best-selling album). By the time they headed into the studio to cut BORN TO LOVE, Bryson was six years into his recording career and had established himself as one of the premier black male vocalists of the day; Flack was already considered an internationally-renowned artist thanks to classic recordings such as ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’ and ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song.’
With tracks produced by songwriters Michael Masser, Bob Crewe and Bryson himself, BORN TO LOVE achieved gold status in the US as well as becoming both artists’ highest-charting international success. The impact of the now-classic single, ‘Tonight, I Celebrate My Love’ (co-written by Masser, then known for songs such as Diana Ross’ ‘Touch Me In The Morning’ and Natalie Cole’s ‘Someone That I Used To Love’ and Gerry Goffin) was global, reaching No. 2 on the UK charts, No. 10 in Australia, No. 4 in Canada and No. 16 in the US).
The album also included two other charted singles, ‘Maybe’ and ‘You’re Looking Like Love To Me’ while ‘Heaven Above Me’ got radio and club play in the UK.
This 2013 expanded edition of BORN TO LOVE includes three bonus tracks along with liner notes by Billboard Senior Editor, Gail Mitchell with new quotes from Roberta Flack.

Just For You/All Night Music
· Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, the brother-and-sister group The McCrarys began their career in the gospel field recording their first LP in 1972. However, it was a move into secular music in 1978 that brought the team national prominence in the US when their debut album for Portrait Records, "Loving Is Living” achieved success, in part due to the Top 10 R&B hit, ‘You’ which featured one of their champions, Stevie Wonder. After their label follow-up LP, "On The Other Side,” the group signed a new deal with Capitol Records in 1980.
· Consisting of sisters Charity and Linda and brothers Alfred, Howard and Sam, The McCrarys worked with producer/musician Patrick Henderson (whose roots were also in the gospel field). With seven tracks credited to various members of the group as songwriters, JUST FOR YOU included the key cut, ‘Any Ol’ Sunday’ which was recorded by Chaka Khan in 1981.
· Teamed with former member of The Crusaders, Wayne Henderson (producer of Ronnie Laws, Esther Phillips, Side Effect and Pleasure among others), the group’s second Capitol LP, ALL NIGHT MUSIC fared better. The track, ‘Love On A Summer Night’ became a Top 100 US R&B hit single and a constant favourite – and now classic - in the UK with ‘smooth groove’fans.
· Apart from a limited Japanese pressing of "All Night Music”, both albums are making their worldwide CD debut with this SoulMusic Records reissue, which includes notes by renowned UK writer Charles Waring with 2013 quotes from members of the group.
