As One (Expanded Edition) - Kool & The Gang

As One (Expanded Edition)

KOOL & THE GANG need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70’s and 80’s having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as ‘Summer Madness,’ ‘Get Down On It,’ ‘Celebration’ and who could forget that slammin’ funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s cult flick - Pulp Fiction; ‘Jungle Boogie.’

1982 would see Kool & The Gang release AS ONE, their 16th studio album. AS ONE went on to become a U.S. Certified Gold album in November of 1982 helped by its top 30 position on the U.S. charts, and top 50 in the U.K. (spending 10 weeks in the U.K. album chart), while also climbing all the way to #5 on the U.S. R&B album chart. The legendary Grammy Award winning pianist, Eumir Deodato would once again take hold of production duties, assisted by Kool & The Gang.

The first single release was ‘Big Fun,’ laden with a killer funky bass line and an equally impressive brass section; the single returned the group to the R&B top ten and UK top twenty. ‘Let’s Go Dancing (Ooh La La La)’ made the most noise on the chart front, earning an impressive top 30 position on the U.S. Pop charts like its predecessor and top 10 spots in both the U.S. R&B and U.K. charts. ‘Hi De Hi, Hi De Ho’ was also received well in the U.K. climbing to #29 on the U.K. charts while the third U.S. single, up-tempo, funky jam ‘Street Kids,’ became a further R&B chart hit.

Other notable tracks include the smooth and soulful album closer ‘Think It Over’ and the similarly paced title track.

BBR is proud to present AS ONE in fully expanded and newly re-mastered glory, complete with extensive liner notes including new interviews, and added bonus material.

Serious Slammin'
The Pointer Sisters were one of the most successful female groups the music industry has seen with 13 top 20 singles and eight top 40 albums shared between the US and UK pop charts. SERIOUS SLAMMIN’ was their ninth & final album with Richard Perry and saw him take the group into the harder electronic funk sound akin to Cameo/Gap Band hits of the period.
HE TURNED ME OUT was the first single and was also the opening theme to the cult movie Action Jackson. This single release saw the sisters return to the top 40 of the R&B and Dance charts.
The second single I’M IN LOVE was written by Jonathan Butler and Simon May and was originally a minor UK hit for Ruby Turner. The Pointer Sisters version became their final R&B hit on RCA Records as well as making the top 40 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart.
Featured as a bonus track on this edition of SERIOUS SLAMMIN’ is the 12” extended remix of BE THERE from Beverly Hills Cop 2. After the huge success of Neutron Dance, featured in Beverly Hills Cop, the Pointers were invited to contribute to the soundtrack of the follow up movie. BE THERE was produced by 80’s hit maker Narada Michael Walden fresh from his hits with Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. The 12” remix featured here was mixed by Shep Pettibone and became the groups final hot 100 hit in 1987. This marks the first time the song has ever appeared on a Pointer Sisters album
