Ladies Night: Expanded Edition - Kool & The Gang

Ladies Night: Expanded Edition

· KOOL & THE GANG need no introduction. They were the top selling Soul group of the 70’s and 80’s having sold over 70 million albums worldwide and have received countless awards. Without them we would not have such great hits as "Summer Madness,” "Get Down On It,” "Celebration” and who could forget that slammin’ funk monster that features so heavily in Quentin Tarantino’s cult flick - Pulp Fiction; "Jungle Boogie.”

· 1979 would see Kool & The Gang release LADIES NIGHT, their 13th studio album. LADIES NIGHT was a departure from the group’s edgier Funk sound that had brought them plenty of success throughout the 1970’s. The decision was made to bring in the Grammy Award winning Brazilian musician Eumir Deodato as producer, which heralded a smoother and more pop focused era for Kool & The Gang and strengthened their grip on both the R&B and Pop charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

· LADIES NIGHT, with its combination of pure, straight ahead dance cuts and down tempo soul pop helped Kool & The Gang strike a new chord with the music buying public and quickly hit the top of the U.S. R&B album chart as a result. The album also easily crossed over and peaked at #13 on the Pop chart.

· Singles featured on LADIES NIGHT include the title track, which rocketed to #1 on the U.S. R&B chart while gaining top ten spots on both the U.S. and U.K. Pop charts. "Too Hot” followed suit, landing at #3 R&B, #5 U.S. Pop and #23 in the U.K. singles chart. While not as successful as the previous two singles "Hangin’ Out” still gained a very respectable chart position slowing at #36 on the U.S. R&B and #52 on the U.K. chart.

· BBR is proud to present LADIES NIGHT. This fully expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with extensive liner notes, with new interviews, and added bonus material.

· This BBR re-master is a must have for all R&B, Soul, Funk, Disco and Pop fans out there!

Billy Preston & Syreeta
  • Continuing to reissue classic original albums from the Motown catalogue, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the worldwide CD debut of the self-titled 1981 album by BILLY PRESTON and SYREETA, an expanded edition with seven bonus tracks.
  • Billy Preston (through mid’-70s hits such as ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’ and ‘Nothing From Nothing’) and Syreeta (former wife of Stevie Wonder with four critically-acclaimed albums to her credit) were established as recording artists in their own right when, as Motown label-mates, they worked together on the 1979 soundtrack for the film, "Fast Break.” While the film itself made no impact, one track from the album, the beautiful ballad ‘With You I’m Born Again’ (included as a bonus track on this reissue along with an instrumental version of the song) became a Top 5 UK hit prompting Motown to release the single in the US where it reached No. 4 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart.
  • Encouraged by the single’s success, Syreeta’s 1980 self-titled LP (reissued by SoulMusic Records in 2013, SMCR-5094) featured two more duets with Billy, ‘One More Time For Love’ and ‘Please Stay,’ both included as bonus tracks on this release along with a non-album ‘B’ side ‘It Will Come In Time.’ The pair recorded BILLY PRESTON & SYREETA in 1981 working with producers including David Shire & Carol Connors, Ollie E. Brown and Michael Masser.
  • Bonus tracks include two versions of ‘Go For It’ (from "Fast Break”) and the reissue includes notes by UK Motown expert Sharon Davis with 2013 quotes from producer/songwriter Carol Connors.

Bumps & Bruises: Expanded Edition
· Joe Tex (born Joseph Arrington, Jr. in Rogers, Texas) was one of Southern Soul’s most uncompromising performers blending gospel, country and rhythm & blues into his repertoire. After winning several revues at the famed Apollo Theatre Tex signed to King Records, in 1955 and recorded a succession of singles for the label from ballads to rockers. A session at Muscle Shoals in 1964, with the singer now signed to the Dial label, produced Tex’s first R&B #1 with the straight ahead R&B ballad ‘Hold What You’ve Got.’ Over the next 10 years Tex racked up numerous R&B and Pop hits including arguably his most well-known song ‘Skinny Legs And All’ in 1967 (R&B #2) and ‘I Gotcha,’ his fourth R&B #1 in 1972.

· BUMPS & BRUISES was the first album Tex recorded for Epic Records and was released in 1977 as the Disco era was gaining a powerful momentum. Tex very cleverly, and with hilarious results, adapted one of the Disco era’s new dance crazes, The Bump, and came up with another crossover hit, ‘Ain’t Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman),’ (R&B #7/Pop #12 / UK #2). Tex injects his down-home funky style into the disco realm while playfully proclaiming his reluctance to keep dancing with the lady in question; she was clearly too much woman for him.

· ‘Hungry For Your Love’ was the second single from the album and reached a modest #84 on the R&B charts. Tex delivers a passionate, yearning vocal on this southern style, gospel tinged ballad. This album is much more rooted in the raw R&B and Funk that Tex had become famed for rather than the hint of what the opening track may suggest. From mid-tempo cuts like "Leaving You Dinner” to ballads like ‘I Almost Got To Heaven Once’ through to propulsive funk grooves like ‘I Mess Up Everything I Get My Hands On’, Tex is in fine form throughout proving his raw style could compete with the shiny and slick new sounds in the late 1970’s.

· Before sadly passing away in 1982 Tex reformed The Soul Clan with Wilson Pickett, Ben E. King and Don Covay in 1980, showing how well respected his career had been amongst his peers.
· BBR is very proud to bring you BUMPS & BRUISES, completely remastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and extended bonus content. A must have for all Funk, Soul and Disco fans!

Love Brought Me Back: Expanded Edition
·       Los Angeles-born D.J. Rogers began his musical journey like  so many of his contemporaries – in the world of gospel:  as a teenaged member of the Los Angeles Community Choir, he was featured on five albums for Savoy Records before recording with the ‘godfather of contemporary gospel,’ the Reverend James Cleveland.
·       In 1969, D.J. (Dwayne Julius) moved into secular music, recording a now-rare self-titled LP for singer/songwriter Leon Russell’s Shelter label. Signed to RCA Records in 1975, the powerhouse vocalist, songwriter, musician and producer made three critically-acclaimed albums for the label, establishing himself as a US soul music favourite with the now-classic ‘Say You Love Me’ (later recorded by Jennifer Holliday and Natalie Cole) and ‘Bula Jean.’
·        When Maurice White (founder of Earth, Wind & Fire) saw D.J. perform at an L.A. event, he signed him to his CBS-distributed Kalimba Productions.  The result was an association that spanned three released albums, the first of which was 1978’s LOVE BROUGHT ME BACK. The uplifting title track became D.J.’s biggest US hit (Top 20 R&B Singles) and the subsequent LP, his best-selling set.
·       This SoulMusic Records’ expanded edition reissue features five bonus tracks, including the 12” single mix of ‘Love Brought Me Back’ and single edits of ‘All My Love’ (a US Top 100 R&B hit) along with extensive liner notes by renowned US writer A. Scott Galloway with 2013 quotes from D.J. himself, Jerry Peters, James Gadson and Maxayn Lewis.
