Magic Journey: Expanded Edition - Salsoul Orchestra (The)

Magic Journey: Expanded Edition
· The brainchild of once MFSB member and legendary vibraphonist, Vince Montana Jr. came THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA.

· Formed in 1974, THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA, house band for the remarkable Salsoul Records, sometimes featured up to 50 members amongst its ranks. This included a number of former musicians from MFSB, the house band for the Gamble & Huff fronted Philadelphia International Records, who fused elements of Funk, Latin, Disco and Philly Soul into their compositions.

· Conducted by Vincent Montana Jr., THE SALSOUL ORCHESTRA began an eight-year recording period in 1975 releasing eleven sensational albums during which time they featured production input from Tom Moulton, Stan Lucas, Patrick Adam and Bunny Sigler as well as the orchestra’s conductor.

· BBR is proud to bring you the third instalment of our Salsoul Orchestra reissues, MAGIC JOURNEY, which climbed all the way to #61 and spent an incredible 20 weeks on the R&B album charts. Recorded at the famous Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with much of the writing, arranging and production being tended to by Vince Montana Jr. himself, MAGIC JOURNEY also features some great musicianship from legends like Bobby Eli, Ron Kersey, Norman Harris and Ron Baker to name but a few.

· Standout tracks include the hit single Run Away, which featured Loleatta Holloway on vocals and spent 6 weeks on the R&B charts peaking at #84. The track would later be revived by Masters At Work with the help of Vince Montana Jr. himself on their 1996 rendition under their Nu-Yorican Soul alias. Other notable tracks include Magic Bird Of Fire with its ominously driven beginning that gives way to an upbeat bass riff coupled with some R&B inspired piano as well as the unmistakable Salsoul groove, and Getaway, with its fusion of disco and Latin flavours.

· This newly re-mastered, fully expanded edition comes packaged complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus content making this BBR re-master of The Salsoul Orchestra – Magic Journey a must have for all R&B, Funk, Soul, Latin, Disco, and Philly Soul fans out there!

Back Stabbers
THE O'JAYS were formed by five high school friends in 1958 who after seeing Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers perform, were inspired to start a vocal group. They spent time on various labels and released some fairly successful singles on Imperial Records working with H.B. Barnum and also Gamble & Huff, who were working as a production team for Neptune Records. Neptune folded in 1971 leaving THE O'JAYS, now a trio, in somewhat of a limbo. Having already captured the attention of Gamble & Huff, THE O'JAYS became one of the first signings at the newly formed, now legendary, Philadelphia International Records. Back Stabbers, released in 1972, was the album that made THE O'JAYS a household name and begun a period of incredible success with Philadelphia International, giving them close to 30 singles in the charts including a string of #1 R&B hits helping them to become one the labels biggest group and also serving as a landmark of the classic Philly Soul sound.  The title track was chosen for the first single and reached #5 on the US Pop chart while giving THE O'JAYS a #1 R&B hit. LOVE TRAIN followed suit and duly hit the top spot on the R&B charts as well as clinching the #1 position on the US Pop Chart.  BBR is so very proud to present the first ever expanded edition of this iconic Philly Soul album. Back Stabbers has been lovingly-mastered and carefully repackaged in full-expanded form. Complete with extensive liner notes featuring interviews along with added bonus content.Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases this BBR Remaster is a must have for all Funk, R&B and Philly Soul fans out there! Loleatta
Loleatta Holloway was a dance music legend. Her amazing vocal talents gained her the reputation as one of the premier vocalists of soul and dance. Loleatta unfortunately passed away in March 2011. Loleatta started singing with Queen of Gospel, Albertina Walker and the Caravans. She released her first single "Rainbow ‘71” on the fledgling Apache label before moving to Aware to record her first two albums prior to her work with Salsoul.
LOLEATTA was her first album for Gold Mind/Salsoul Records and was released in 1976. WORN OUT BROKEN HEART was released as the album’s first single and made #25 R&B. Its B-Side was DREAMIN’, an underground club hit when initially released. DREAMIN’ later became one of Salsoul’s key tracks and has often been remixed, most notably in 200 when it topped the Billboard Dance chart. HIT AND RUN was the album’s second single and another Salsoul classic. It was a #11 Disco hit when released.
LOLEATTA also features WE’RE GETTING STRONGER which was sampled by Whitney Houston on her Million Dollar Bill single as well as the Curtis Mayfield penned song WHAT NOW. Loleatta was responsible for providing the vocals for dance classics Love Sensation and Relight My Fire (Dan Hartman) as well as the UK #1 hit by Black Box, Ride On Time.
Released in deluxe Super Jewel cases, with bonus tracks LOLEATTA is a must for all Soul and Funk fans out there and a very welcome addition to our collection of Salsoul reissues!

Utopia
Enchantment were formed in 1967 at Pershing High School in Detroit and secured their first recording contract two years later by winning first place in a talent contest sponsored by Detroit’s WCHB radio station.
In 1970 Enchantment joined the renowned talent agency Artists International and developed their song and stage craft through the early seventies performing throughout the Detroit area. This period culminated in the group recording the soundtrack for the movie ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ which was released on Polydor in 1975.
The following year Enchantment released their eponymous debut LP which kick started a great run of success and the release of further albums over the following few years which spawned the singles ‘Gloria’ (R&B #5) and ‘Sunshine’ (R&B #3), ‘It’s You That I Need’ (R&B #1), and ‘If You’re Ready (Here It Comes)’ (R&B #14, and an underground dance classic)" to name just a few.
Utopia was Enchantments sixth LP released in 1983 and saw the group take a departure from their horn and string led soulful, lush sound, instead putting the Fairlight synthesizer at the core of the album. Utopia contains both passionate ballads and full-on club tracks. ‘Don’t Fight The Feeling’ was the album’s R&B hit single with its relaxing percussive groove and compassionate vocal from Joe ‘Jobie’ Thomas. ‘I’m Dreaming’ sees Emanuel ‘E.J.’ Johnson lend his hair-raising tenor vocal to a gorgeous composition. ‘Somebody’s Loving You’ and ‘Get It While It’s Hot’ are both bone-fide dance-floor shakers with the former demonstrating the group’s aptitude for straight ahead rhythms and solid propulsive bass-lines.
BBR are very proud to present UTOPIA, fully re-mastered with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks.
UTOPIA is a must for all R&B, Soul and Post Disco/Dance fans out there!
