The O’Jays In Philadelphia - O'Jays (The)

The O’Jays In Philadelphia
THE O'JAYS were formed by five high school friends in 1958 who after seeing Frankie Lymon and The Teenagers perform, were inspired to start a vocal group. They spent time on various labels and released some fairly successful singles on Imperial Records working with H.B. Barnum and also Gamble & Huff, who were working as a production team for Neptune Records. THE O’JAYS IN PHILADELPHIA was the group’s only studio album to be released on Neptune Records in 1970.The title refers to the beginning of their association with Philly's R&B scene and producers/songwriters Kenny Gamble&Leon Huff. This album heralded a long run of success and one of the most fruitful partnerships in the history of soul music with The O’Jays becoming the biggest act on Gamble and Huff’s legendary Philadelphia International Records imprint throughout the 70’s when the label released the "Back Stabbers” album in 1972 (CDBBR0051). THE O’JAYS IN PHILADELPHIA starts with the amazing ‘One Night Affair’. The song was released as a single in the summer of ’69 reached #15 R&B. The track has an up-tempo propulsive groove backed up with lush strings and horns to compliment the gritty gospel influenced vocal from Eddie Levert as he pleads for a night of passion with no strings attached. The second single was ‘Branded Bad’ (R&B #41), a quintessential Gamble/Huff production with some great instrumentation including a crunching organ motif towards the end. ‘Deeper (In Love With You)’ (R&B #21), the third single, is a swinging soul track in the 60’s style with a demanding ‘walking’ bass line and a very danceable track. Single number four, ‘Looky Looky (Look At Me Girl)’ (R&B #17) is another energetic up-tempo soul track with the group pleading for attention from the fairer sex. Other standout tracks are the stunning ballad ‘Let Me In To Your World’ and the mid-tempo groovers ‘You’re The Best Thing Since Candy’ and ‘I Should Be Your Lover’. BBR is very proud to present THE O’JAYS IN PHILADELPHIA, expertly re-mastered and complete with extensive liner notes and the album’s original art work on CD for the first time. THE O’JAYS IN PHILADELPHIA is absolutely essential listening for all R&B and Soul fans, especially those who champion the Philly Sound!

Bagpipe Music
Bagpipe Music - an album first released in 1981 to high critical acclaim from artists hailed as the "worlds first poetry dance band"… The Art Objects. The brainchild of Bristol poet Gerard Langley and the pre-cursor to his current band The Blue Aeroplanes, this album was the first time poetry and music had been uniquely fused together in such a way that even John Cooper Clark would envy. A collection of "brilliant images and stunning sounds that nothing else comes close to" yelled the music press. Even Radio One woke up and offered daytime airplay to the single "Showing off to Impress the Girls". The Art Objects had arrived, four of Bristols' finest musicians providing the perfect backdrop for Gerards' words - words that speak for themselves, but only if you're prepared to listen - and now you can, this time on CD for the first time, with four extra previously unreleased tracks. Wendy and Lisa
Having brought their esoteric funk leanings to Prince & The Revolution through their purple reign in the early 80s, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman split to pursue their own maverick musical path in 1986. Their self-titled debut saw the duo (who recently won their first Emmy for the soundtrack to hit US drama ‘Nurse Jackie’) at their most creatively daring and typically eclectic – ranging from Minneapolis funk to jazz fusion and acoustic balladry.
Included on this Special Edition CD of 15 remastered tracks are:
The original 1987 album containing the singles ‘Waterfall’, ‘Sideshow’ and ‘Honeymoon Express’, written and produced by Wendy & Lisa with Bobby Z. Includes guest appearance by veteran jazz saxophonist Tom Scott. A must-have for all Prince fans.
Bonus tracks include hard-to-find 12” mixes of all the album’s singles.

A comprehensive booklet featuring discography and an exclusive interview and track-by-track review by Lisa Coleman with ex-Attitude editor Adam Mattera.

Hard Core Poetry
After the brothers Tavares (Ralph, Pooch, Chubby, Butch and Tiny) signed to Capitol Records in 1974, they experienced immediate success with their debut LP, Check It Out. However, it was the follow-up, the much-treasured HARD CORE POETRY that set the group up for a row of hits that established them as solid hit-makers.
Produced by the team of Dennis Lambert & Brian Potter, (just coming off success with The Four Tops), HARD CORE POETRY (a Top 20 R&B charted album) gave the New Bedford, Massachusetts family group the first of three No. 1 U.S. R&B hits in the form of 1974’s ‘She’s Gone,’ a song written and originally recorded by Philly blue-eyed soul duo, Hall & Oates.
The album also included two other major hits for Tavares, the uptempo ‘Too Late’ (No. 10 R&B) and ‘Remember What I Told You To Forget’ (No. 4 R&B/No. 25 pop), a song that had originally been cut by The Four Tops. The flipside of that single, ‘My Ship’ also achieved significant club airplay reaching No. 13 on Billboard’s disco charts.
Previously only available as a now out-of-print Japanese CD, this expanded edition of HARD CORE POETRY includes two single edits as bonus tracks and liner notes by SoulTracks’ founder Chris Rizik with quotes from Pooch Tavares. HARD CORE POETRY is part of the reissue series by SoulMusic Records of Tavares albums including "In The City” (SMCR-5022), "Sky-High!” (SMCR-5023), "Supercharged” (SMCR-5045), "Madam Butterfly” (SMCR-5064) and "Love Uprising” (SMCR-5065).
