Melody Of Life - Gwen McCrae

Melody Of Life
Gwen McCrae, a gutsy soul singer in the southern style and initially influenced by such leading lights of the soul world as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin, is known best for her 1975 R&B #1 "Rockin’ Chair”.
Having married George "Rock Your Baby” McCrae after a whirlwind romance in 1963 the couple became a vocal duo, ‘George & Gwen’ and were discovered by influential singer/producer Betty Wright in the late 60’s while performing extensively throughout South Florida. Betty Wright was able to help them get a recording deal at Henry Stones Alston imprint which led to a move to Columbia Records before going back to a different Henry Stone imprint, Cat. A succession of singles were released during this period with modest success until she hit the R&B #1 spot with the aforementioned ‘Rockin’ Chair’ in 1975 and followed it up with her debut LP of the same name. Gwen recorded several more albums for the Cat imprint with reasonable R&B chart success before teaming up again with Betty Wright who produced her final LP for the label, MELODY OF LIFE, in 1979.
MELODY OF LIFE opens with intent with McCrae putting down a strong, soulful vocal on "All This Love That I’m Givin’” backed up with a great synth bass line helping it to become a much lauded underground dance floor favourite up to the present day despite not charting on its release. From ‘I Can Only Think Of You’ onwards MELODY OF LIFE provides elegant and endearing soulful backdrops for McCrae’s stunning vocals to soar over. ‘The Joy’ has a positive groove led by the bass guitar and backed up with an energetic horn section. On every track McCrae is at her impassioned best, a great example of which is ‘Ease The Pain’ where McCrae builds the track to a emotional crescendo, tapping right in to the song’s theme of loneliness.
BBR is very proud to present an often overlooked soul classic MELODY OF LIFE with extensive liner notes and bonus tracks.

Nona Hendryx

Released on 27/09/10. Nona Hendryx was one third of the pop/soul act LaBelle, and by far and away made the hippest solo records of any of the other members of the group, Patti LaBelle and Sarah Dash.

After LaBelle called it quits in 1976. Hendryx released her self-titled debut record, which was an amazingly strong amalgam of soul and hard rock.

Wearing skin tight pants, black leather and brandishing a Bowie knife on the LP cover she announced her intentions loud and clear but neither record company or radio at that time knew what to do with this African American woman with a huge voice comfortable and capable of singing hard rock as well as soul music.

Nona worked with Talking Heads as back-up singer and fell in with a hip crowd of musicians and her association with David Byrne led to her working with Bill Laswell who helped her put together her second solo album. Entitled NONA it sparked greater interest in Nona s considerable talents and her solo career flourished.

Don't Look Any Further- Expanded Edition
Born February 1943 in Birmingham, Alabama, Dennis Edwards began his singing career at a very early age when he began singing in his father’s church choir at the tender age of 2. After moving to Detroit several years later, Edwards continued his passion for singing in a number of groups and later formed his own Soul/Jazz outfit called Dennis Edwards and the Fireballs and in 1967 joined The Contours before leaving to replace David Ruffin as The Temptations lead singer the following year.

After a very successful period with The Temptations, winning two Grammy Awards for the songs Cloud Nine and Papa Was A Rolling Stone, it was time for Edwards to try a second attempt at his solo career on Motown, this time with great success! 1984 saw the release of DON T LOOK ANY FURTHER. Produced by Dennis Lambert, and featuring support vocals from the likes of Paulette Williams who was the first lead singer of Rufus before Chaka Khan, the album soared into the top 50 in the Pop charts and #2 spot in the R&B charts. The title track, a duet with Siedah Garrett, also known for her duet with Michael Jackson on I Just Cant Stop Loving.

You and co-writer of Man In The Mirror, features a timeless bass line and Dennis Edwards smooth vocals lock it down into a serious groove making it easy to see why it became a UK hit twice in the eighties and a timeless dance classic. Other notable tracks are the soulful second single, You’re My Aphrodisiac which climbed to #15 in the R&B chart and the funky synth-led, Cant Fight It.
