Caston & Majors - Caston & Majors

Caston & Majors
CASTON & MAJORS is one of the most sought after Motown releases of all time and BBR is proud to announce the first ever CD release of the classic album with an entirely unreleased follow-up album included as bonus tracks!
The son of the legendary bluesman Leonard "Baby Doo” Caston, Leonard Caston Jr. started learning music and how to play guitar from his father and later made his way onto piano. By the tender young age of eight Caston was playing keys at his local church. It was there he was approached by Maurice McAllister to join a group that would later catch the attention of A&R director Billy Davis of the legendary Chess Records. They recorded a few R&B hits as The Radiants before Leonard Chess sadly died of a heart attack in 1969.
Caston then joined Motown and began working alongside Kathy Wakefield and Frank Wilson, co-writing songs for The Supremes and Eddie Kendricks. Later some of his songs were also recorded by The Four Tops and The Jackson 5. Caston also earned himself a 1975 Grammy Nomination, around the time he met his future wife, Carolyn Majors.
After relocating to L.A. the duo signed a recording deal to Motown. CASTON & MAJORS features the hugely successful track I’ll Keep My Light In My Window. Co-written by Caston with Terri McFadden, the song would go to be recorded by the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations and would win A Grammy when recorded by the Mighty Clouds of Joy. Other notable tracks include the incredibly uplifting LET THERE BE LOVE and EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT NOW which features a more recognizable Motown sound.
BBR is extremely proud to present CASTON & MAJORS digitally remastered and lovingly repackaged for the first time on CD anywhere in the world!
Complete with liner notes featuring interviews with Leonard Caston and Carolyn Majors with added bonus content, this Motown gem is a must have for any Funk, Soul, Gospel and Disco fan.

End Of The World
End Of The World by Greek Psych / Prog legends Aphrodite's Child. Formed in 1967 by keyboard player VANGELIS, the band also featured Demis Roussos on bass and vocals and Lucas Sideras on Drums. Their classic debut album was released in 1968 and featured the international hit Rain and Tears , partially inspired by Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale. However, the album revealed a more experimental side to the Band's nature with such Psychedelic gems as The Grass is No Green, You Always Stand in My Way and Day of the Fool. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been re-mastered from the original tapes and includes both sides of Aphrodite's Child's first single as bonus tracks. Our Price: £10.95

Groups & Sessions 65-74
Keith West is best remembered as the voice behind the legendary 'Grocer Jack' single Excerpt From A Teenage Opera, became a champion of both the pop charts and the 60's psychedelic lifestyle. Away from the pin-up-mags Keith also made a serious impression on the underground scene with Tomorrow. Keith enjoyed a wonderful and varied career, this compilation charts his progress through the 1960's and into the '70's with a remarkable collection of rare and previously unissued tracks. Ranging from Four + One, the In Crowd, with guitarist Steve Howe (who, when they became Tomorrow wrote two songs for the cult sixties thriller Blow Up, which appear here for the very first time) to both Teenage Opera Singles.

Witch Doctor: Expanded Edition
•    Instant Funk came out of New Jersey in the early seventies having started life as The Music Machine, performing as backing band for the likes of The Manhattans, Bunny Sigler and The TNJ's. The group moved to Philadelphia in 1976 to work on their own sound and released their first LP "Get Down With The Philly Jump” on the city’s famous TSOP imprint, now firmly under the wing of Bunny Sigler who produced the record. The following year Instant Funk backed Bunny Sigler on his Gold Mind/Salsoul release "Let Me Party With You” (CDBBR0249) paving the way for the groups eponymous debut on Salsoul in early 1979 (CDBBR0121) having perfected their marriage of Philly Soul/Disco and Heavy Funk.

•    WITCH DOCTOR (R&B #23/Pop #129), also released in 1979, came hot on the heels of the success of their first Salsoul offering capitalizing on tracks such as ‘I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)’ which hit the top spot on both the R&B and Disco charts. Bunny Sigler comes to the fore in the producers chair on WITCH DOCTOR, galvanizing the group to hit the heights on the full on funk tracks ‘Bodyshine’ (R&B #41/Pop #103), with Tee Scott's 12” Mix also included on this release, ‘Slap, Slap, Lickedy Lap,’ and the title track ‘Witch Doctor’ (R&B #35) which all exemplify the tightest of units at the top of their game grooving on the richest of party funk cuts. ‘Scream And Shout’ is another floor-filler while the ballad ‘I Had A Dream’ shows the band in a different light.

•    During their career Instant Funk also worked with the likes of the O’Jays, Archie Bell & the Drells, the Three Degrees, Dexter Wansell and Evelyn "Champagne” King, as well as releasing seven albums between 1976 and 1983.

If You Want Me: Expanded Edition
•    CD DEBUT OF CLASSIC SOUL ALBUM FROM ARETHA’S SISTER!

•    CAROLYN ANN FRANKLIN spent her singing and song writing career somewhat in the shadow of her hugely successful sister, The First Lady Of Soul, Aretha, having followed both her older siblings Aretha and Erma from the church into a secular recording career in the mid to late sixties. Although, Like Erma, Carolyn had modest success compared to Aretha she recorded with her sister many times and proved herself as an excellent songwriter penning hits for Aretha such as ‘Ain't No Way,’ ‘Save Me’ and the stunning ‘Angel.’ From 1969-1973 Franklin released three albums in produced by Jimmy Radcliffe which provided the R&B hits ‘All I Want To Be Is Your Woman’ and ‘It's True I'm Gonna Miss You,’ proving Carolyn was an exceptional vocalist in her own right.

•    IF YOU WANT ME was Franklin's fourth and last studio album released in 1976 on RCA. Carolyn displays incredibly subtlety and control on this excellent album on which also she provides many of the song writing credits. ‘From The Bottom Of My Heart (To The Bottom Of Yours)’ sets the smooth, honeyed tone for the rest of this under-appreciated album. The beautifully sung and arranged ballad ‘I Can't Help My Feeling So Blue’ should have dented the R&B chart but went under the radar. Title track ‘If You Want Me’ and ‘You Can Have My Soul’ are superb examples of 'loose but tight' 70's soul with progressive rhythms and plenty of feeling. Closer ‘Deal With It,’ a classic slice of funky soul, adds a little kick at the end and tips it's hat to sister Aretha's ‘Rock Steady’ with its chopping rhythms and ‘There It Is’ refrain.

•    BBR is proud to present Carolyn Franklin's IF YOU WANT ME. This expanded and re-mastered edition comes complete with extensive liner notes and added bonus material and is a must have for all R&B, Soul and Funk fans out there!

Edwin Starr - Soul Master / Involved - BUNDLE DEAL
Take advantage of our special mail order bundle deal, buy 2 Edwin Starr albums - 'Soul Master' and 'Involved' for just £14.99!!

EDWIN STARR hailed from Nashville, Tennessee and is best remembered for his rasping Vietnam protest song ‘War’ from 1970. After a stint as vocalist for Bill Doggett’s touring band Starr was able to secure a solo recording deal with Detroit's Ric-Tic Records in 1965 and immediately gained chart success with his self- penned hit ‘Agent Double-O-Soul’ (R&B #8/Pop #21). More Ric-Tic hits followed before Berry Gordy bought out Starr's contract in 1967 and took him and his music to the fabled Motown imprint, making the James Brown and Stax influenced singer the rawest vocalist on the celebrated label.

  • SOUL MASTER was Starr's debut album and was released on Motown's Gordy imprint in 1968. With soul music in the 60's, and especially with Motown, the emphasis was on singles, so the album did not chart but does boast a number of R&B hit singles. These include the aforementioned ‘Agent Double-O-Soul’ and Starr's other top ten Ric-Tic release, 1966's ‘Stop Her On Sight (S.O.S)’ (R&B #9/Pop #48/UK #35), as well as ‘Headline News’ (Pop #84). Two more singles, issued on Gordy, charted in the US during the same year as the album release. These were ‘I Am The Man For You Baby’ (R&B #45/Pop #112) and ‘Way Over There’ (Pop #119).

  • INVOLVED was Starr's fifth LP for the Gordy imprint on Motown Records and was released in 1971. Reaching #45 R&B and a respectable #178 Pop INVOLVED was guided by legendary Motown producer Norman Whitfield who, along with song writing partner Barrett Strong, contributed the majority of the cuts on this album. Whitfield has both Starr and the session musicians playing as hard and explosive as he can, marking this album out as one of the rawest recordings ever released under the Motown banner.
