Caston & Majors - Caston & Majors

Caston & Majors
CASTON & MAJORS is one of the most sought after Motown releases of all time and BBR is proud to announce the first ever CD release of the classic album with an entirely unreleased follow-up album included as bonus tracks!
The son of the legendary bluesman Leonard "Baby Doo” Caston, Leonard Caston Jr. started learning music and how to play guitar from his father and later made his way onto piano. By the tender young age of eight Caston was playing keys at his local church. It was there he was approached by Maurice McAllister to join a group that would later catch the attention of A&R director Billy Davis of the legendary Chess Records. They recorded a few R&B hits as The Radiants before Leonard Chess sadly died of a heart attack in 1969.
Caston then joined Motown and began working alongside Kathy Wakefield and Frank Wilson, co-writing songs for The Supremes and Eddie Kendricks. Later some of his songs were also recorded by The Four Tops and The Jackson 5. Caston also earned himself a 1975 Grammy Nomination, around the time he met his future wife, Carolyn Majors.
After relocating to L.A. the duo signed a recording deal to Motown. CASTON & MAJORS features the hugely successful track I’ll Keep My Light In My Window. Co-written by Caston with Terri McFadden, the song would go to be recorded by the likes of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations and would win A Grammy when recorded by the Mighty Clouds of Joy. Other notable tracks include the incredibly uplifting LET THERE BE LOVE and EVERYTHING IS ALRIGHT NOW which features a more recognizable Motown sound.
BBR is extremely proud to present CASTON & MAJORS digitally remastered and lovingly repackaged for the first time on CD anywhere in the world!
Complete with liner notes featuring interviews with Leonard Caston and Carolyn Majors with added bonus content, this Motown gem is a must have for any Funk, Soul, Gospel and Disco fan.

Amigo
BBR expand their musical horizons again with the release of the 1980 Reggae/Brit-Funk LP AMIGO by UK group Black Slate. Black Slate are a reggae band based in the United Kingdom which formed in 1974 and included musicians from England,Jamaica, and Anguilla. They toured heavily around London and the UK in their formative years, backing renowned Jamaican musicians such as Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson and Ken Boothe. They toured the UK in their own right for the first time in 1978, capitalising on the success of their first reggae chart hit ‘Sticks Man’ in 1976. The anti-mugging song made a big impression on the continent where the record hit the Dutchand Flemish charts after being an underground hit in Antwerp discothèques. Also at this time Black Slate formed their own TCD label and achieved a minor hit with the single ‘Mind Your Motion’, and in 1980 their Rastafarian rallying call, ‘Amigo’, was picked up by Ensign Records, and broke into the UK Singles Chart, reaching a very impressive #9. It was also in 1980 that Black Slate released the album AMIGO, also on Ensign Records, which features all three of the hit singles already mentioned above and secured Black Slates’ reputation as one of the leading contemporary reggae outfits in Europe with their dance floor friendly reggae grooves. BBR is very proud to present AMIGO in full and expanded form, complete with extensive liner notes and bonus content. This BBR re-master is a must have for all Reggae, Disco and Brit-Funk fans out there!

All My Life
Arthur Prysock (born January 2nd 1929 in Spartanburg, South Carolina) had a long and varied career as a vocalist of high repute, lending his velvet baritone to jazz, blues, R&B, pop and disco, having been inspired by his musical hero Billy Eckstine.
Prysock was discovered by the jump blues band leader Buddy Johnson while living and working in Hartford CT, where he had honed his talents in several groups during his time off. Johnson installed Prysock as his lead male vocalist and they recorded several hits together for Decca in the 40’s before Arthur went solo, touring the chitlin circuit, sometimes accompanied by his brother Red Prysock, (an exhilarating tenor saxophonist) with whom he also recorded. Before long ‘I Didn’t Sleep A Wink Last Night’ gave Arthur his first solo R&B hit on Decca in 1952 charting at a high of #5, and cementing his reputation as a great balladeer.
During the late 50’s and early 60’s Arthur recorded several R&B hits for the Old Town label and in 1965 fulfilled a life-long dream recording with Count Basie, which started a fruitful relationship with the Verve label for the remainder of the decade.
The 1976 album ‘All My Life’ (R&B #36, Pop #153) heralded a return to prominence (and to his old label Old Town) for Prysock and exemplified his dexterity in tackling the new contemporary Philly Soul inspired disco style. The lead single ‘When Love Is New’ (R&B #10, Pop #64), a smooth, percussive disco-soul track with Prysock’s perfectly understated laid-back vocal was penned by legendary Philly International producers and song-writers Gamble & Huff, as was follow up single ‘I Wantcha Baby’ (R&B #43) which tells you everything you need to know about the tone of this underappreciated album. Another stand out is the title track ‘All My Life’, Prysock delivers a Barry White-esque impassioned croon over an up-tempo, uplifting solid dancefloor groove provided by this tracks songwriter, and producer of the album John Davis, along with his Monster Orchestra.
BBR is very proud to bring you ALL MY LIFE completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and bonus content.
ALL MY LIFE, released on CD for the first time, is a must have for all R&B, Disco and Philly Soul fans out there!

Gap Band VII
THE GAP BAND enjoyed huge success throughout the 70s and 80s with their unique sound and contribution to the Funk scene. Formed in 1967 in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, brothers Charlie, Ronnie and Robert Wilson first went by the name Greenwood, Archer and Pine Street Band later shortening the name to THE GAP BAND in 1973. LA Producer, Lonnie Simmons, signed them to his label, Total Experience Records, setting in motion what would be the start of a long and prosperous relationship between THE GAP BAND and Simmons.
Notable hits include their top ten hit Shake, the breakthrough single from The Gap Band II, I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops!) and the number one R&B hit Early In The Morning taken from their 1982 #1 R&B album The Gap Band IV. Their 1985 offering THE GAP BAND VI, an R&B #1 album, spawned the hits Beep A Freak (R&B #2), I Found My Baby (R&B #8) and Disrespect which earned a Top 20 R&B position.
1986 brought the release of THE GAP BAND VII and with it the band scored another hit R&B album peaking at #6. The first single was the opening track DESIRE, which was followed by the stunning R&B ballad GOING IN CIRCLES which climbed all the way to #2 on the Billboard R&B charts. The final single saw the band back on their trademark groove with the super-catchy funk workout, AUTOMATIC BRAIN, while not gaining the acclaim that it deserved at the time, Automatic Brain has gone on to be revered by Gap Band fans everywhere.
THE GAP BAND VII also provided classic Gap Band sonics on the tracks ‘Ooh, What A Feeling’, ‘Li’l Red Funkin’ Hood’ and ‘Bumpin’ Gum People’.
BBR is very proud to present the next entry in our series of new to CD Total Experience reissues in the form of THE GAP BAND VII, newly remastered and repackaged for the first time on CD anywhere in the world complete with extensive liner notes and expansive bonus content.
This BBR Remaster is a must have for all Funk, Soul, R&B and Quiet Storm fans out there!

Lately
Grammy Award Winner, Billy Paul is most noted for his R&B and Pop #1 ME AND MRS. JONES from his 1972 album 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul (CDBBR 0175). From the early 70’s through to the early 80’s Billy Paul was one of the most successful artists on the legendary Philadelphia International Records imprint scoring several hit albums and singles and securing his reputation as one of the most expressive, dynamic and heartfelt soul singers in the world.
Having released his last solo album for PIR in 1979 (First Class) Billy took a break from the studio but returned in 1985 having signed a deal with Lonnie Simmons Total Experience Records (joining new label mates the Gap Band and Yarbrough & Peoples) and cut this album, LATELY, the fifth Billy Paul album to be given the BBR re-master treatment!
Unlike his PIR recordings on which he was backed by a live band/orchestra LATELY has a fully synth/keyboard based musical backdrop produced under the direction of Total Experience staff songwriters/producers Jonah Ellis and Oliver Scott (as well as Billy Paul himself) which gave the Philly Soul singer a contemporary sound favoured by many Soul and R&B artists of the time.
Standout cuts on LATELY are Billy’s covers of ‘ON A CLEAR DAY’ and ‘I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU’, the ethereal ballad ‘LET ME IN’, ‘GET DOWN TO LOVIN’’, ‘HOT DATE’ and ‘SEXUAL THERAPY’, a track in the same vain as Marvin Gaye’s ‘Sexual Healing’.
BBR is very proud to bring you LATELY, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes and bonus content.
LATELY is a must have for all R&B, SOUL, and FUNK fans out there!
