Dick Jensen - Dick Jensen

Dick Jensen
DICK JENSEN is arguable the greatest music entertainer to hail from the Pacific paradise islands of Hawaii. Immersing himself on native Hawaiian sounds and the Pop, Soul, Country and Rock music he heard on radio, it wasn’t long before this Blue-Eyed Soul vocalist began to catch attention across the music world.
After spending the ‘60’s and early ‘70’s wowing crowds from Las Vegas to Mexico City and his native Hawaii, where he supported The Rolling Stones on their 1966 US tour (his exuberant dance moves were likened to James Brown and Jackie Wilson), and releasing a number of well received records on various labels Jensen found himself signed to the legendary Philadelphia International Records in 1972.
The following year, backed by the insatiable PIR house band MFSB, Jensen released this debut with the label to an initially muted response.
The breezy "Penny For Your Thoughts” opens the album and immediately informs the listener that this isn’t going to be a completely typical PIR platter as this track is a delicious slice of melodic Easy Listening Pop at it’s finest.
The classic PIR sound makes its first appearance on "I Don’t Want To Cry,” originally a hit for Chuck Jackson in 1961. Jensen’s version swoops and soars thanks to his passionate delivery. The real gem on this self-titled album however is "New York City’s A Lonely Town,” a wonderfully soulful ballad that Jensen really sinks his teeth into. 32nd Street found an audience in the UK where it was released as a single.
With a musical setting that would have made The Stylistics cry with glee, Jensen wraps his booming voice around the heart-breaking melody, turning the sweat of his performance into tears of loneliness.
BBR is very proud to bring you DICK JENSEN, completely re-mastered and repackaged complete with extensive liner notes, a must have for all Soul, Pop & Easy Listening fans out there.

Psychonaut
Released 28/06/10. Esoteric Recordings continue with releases on their new Reactive imprint, (dedicated to reissues of classic German rock), with the first ever UK CD release of Psychonaut by Brainticket. Formed in 1968 by Belgian born keyboard player Joel Vandroogenbroeck, the band released their debut album, the extreme psychedelic Cottonwoodhill in Germany in 1971. Breaking apart soon after, Vandroogenbroeck formed a new incarnation of the group with drummer Barney Palm comprising Swiss and Italian musicians. Psychonaut was recorded in Milan in 1972 and was less intense than Cottonwood Hill but was more cohesive and was an impressive Psychedelic rock album, later much sampled by European Trance DJs. Psychonaut is one of THE essential albums associated with the German Psych & Prog scene of the early 1970's. Our Price: £10.95

Live Music from the Twilight Zone
Released 22/02/10. Esoteric are pleased to continue their series of CD reissues of the catalogue of Finnish Progressive group Wigwam with their classic 1975 double live album Live Music From The Twilight Zone. Formed in Helsinki in 1969, the band featured the talents of British Keyboard player and vocalist Jim Pembroke, Jukka Gustavson (keyboards, vocals), Pekka Pohjola (bass, violin, keyboards) and Ronnie Osterberg (drums). In late 1974, following the release of the album Being (also released by Esoteric this month), the band were augmented by the arrival of guitarist Pekka Rechardt. Soon after a series of concerts in Finland were recorded by Love Records to comprise Wigwam's first live album. The recordings demonstrated the diversity of the band and the excellent musicianship of its members. A particular stand out track was a fifteen minute version of Jim Pembroke's Grass for Blades, previously recorded under the pseudonym Hot Thumbs O'Reilly. Soon after these recordings both Gustavson and Pohjola departed, leaving this album as their final statement with Wigwam. Our Price: £10.95
