And Did Those Feet
When Mick Mercer, one of the most respected music journalists with some 30 years in the trenches, cites The Dancing Did as his favourite English band of all time, you know we're talking about something a little special. Yet their epic output, has always been a little too subversive and clever for the mainstream and therefore has never before been available on CD. Cherry Red's re-release puts this travesty to rights, restoring their captivating sole long-player "And Did Those Feet" in full. As if that wasn't enough, the package comes complete with bonus material from their time with Stiff and Kamera Records, including all their a-sides, plus never before heard soundboard live recordings. The package also includes Mick's detailed liner notes, written in co-operation with the band, plus exclusive photographs and memorabilia. The Dancing Did's amalgam of the rural Gothic, replete with folk jigs and Hank Marvin-esque guitar, as well as Tim Harrison's unfailingly intricate and humorous lyrics, mark them out as one of the great undiscovered treasures of the early 80s post-punk milieu. The Curse of The Higsons: Deluxe Edition

· The Higsons were founded in 1980 at the University of East Anglia by Charlie ‘Switch’ Higson, Terry Edwards, Simon Charterton, Colin Williams, Dave Cummings and Stuart McGeachin. Over a string of Indie singles and an album, they married disjointed punk/funk rhythms and warbling vocals in a style which betrayed their love of Talking Heads.

· After singles on local Norwich-based labels like Romans In Britain and Waap and two releases for 2Tone, the band signed to Upright for long-overdue album The Curse Of The Higsons in 1984. Charlie later excelled as a comedian and writer (not least in The Fast Show) while Terry has seemingly played every instrument with myriad different bands.

· Long out-of-print, The Curse Of The Higsons is now treated to a deluxe 3-CD set, compiled, mastered and approved by Terry Edwards and the rest of the band.

· This expanded version adds all the versions/tracks which graced their two collectable singles for 2Tone (‘Tear The Whole Thing Down’ and ‘Run Me Down’), plus other singles ‘Push Out The Boat’, their charming cover of Andy Williams’ ‘Music To Watch Girls By’ and a demo of their swansong, ‘Take It’, from 1985.

· As a bonus third disc, the hitherto cassette-only album Live At The Jacquard Club, Norwich makes its digital debut. Issued on Chaos Tapes, it is now swelled by five tracks from a Lyceum show in 1984, three of which are previously unissued..

Members of The Higsons, including Charlie, will be speaking about the band’s history as part of celebrations for UEA's 50th anniversary over the last weekend of September.

Black And Dekker - The Complete Stiff Recordings 1980 - 1982

·A legend in Jamaican music, Desmond Dekker was the island’s first ‘outernational’ star, scoring huge hits in the late 60s with the likes of ‘007’, ‘It Mek’ and ‘Israelites’.

·This 2-CD set boasts all of Desmond’s recordings for Stiff between 1980 and 1982, including two albums plus stray B-sides and a brace of exclusive tracks from the rare ‘Hot City’ 12”. This was a successful period for Dekker, who enjoyed renewed popularity on the back of the 2 Tone movement.

·The majority of these recordings are currently unavailable on CD. In fact, the two albums have only been issued before as rare Japanese imports!

·Black And Dekker was self-produced with help from Vic Keary and Stiff boss Dave Robinson and engineered by the likes of Sid Bucknor (like Keary, a Trojan Records veteran). The album boasted reworkings of several of his classic 1960s singles. Also included here is ‘Juliet’, which was omitted from the UK/European edition.

B-A-B-Y (The Complete Stiff Recordings 1978-1980)
It’s 1977 and Stiff Records struck oil in Akron, Ohio when they signed Devo. Following up with ‘The Akron Compilation’ which featured fellow ‘Akronites’ Jane Aire, The Waitresses and the youngest of them all, Rachel Sweet.

Already talented way beyond her years, Rachel had toured the US and recorded several independent Country singles by the time she took the train from London to John O’Groats with backing band The Records to become the surprise hit on 1978’s ‘Be Stiff’ tour at the tender age of 16.

Rachel’s Country Music leanings were perfectly juxtaposed with songwriter/producer Liam ‘Walk Like An Egyptian’ Sternberg’s urban new wave sketches and pop pastiches of the past with retro recordings of Carla Thomas’ Stax US hit B-A-B-Y (a Top 40 UK hit for Rachel in January 1979) and the Spectropop treatment of Dusty Springfield’s Stay Awhile.

Subsequent recordings for the label resulted in the debut album Fool Around ; a classic Stiff in house affair featuring The Rumour and The Blockheads, as well as Will Birch’s Pin A Medal On Mary and Elvis Costello’s Stranger In The House.

RPM’s B-A-B-Y: The Complete Stiff Recordings 1978-1980 collects together Rachel’s entire recorded output for the label with all the necessary Hits Greatest Stiffs including compilation only tracks, live and remix B-sides…and Rachel’s second and final album for the label in 1980, Protect The Innocent, produced by Martin Rushent and Alan Winstanley - a much, harder rock around the edges album taking on Elvis Presley,Lou Reed and Graham Parker.

Disc One presents the Akron Compilation tracks, the ‘Fool Around’ LP , the first singles b-sides, a Sounds exclusive track. Disc Two presents the ‘Protect The Innocent’ LP and the final single b-sides.
