The singles collection 1975-83 - Ian Hunter

The singles collection 1975-83
The first ever round up of all the singles, A’s and B’s, that the legend that is Ian Hunter issued for CBS and Chrysalis.

Originally known as the voice and face of Mott The Hoople, Hunter split in 1975 and started a solo career that is fast approaching its 40th year.

From 1975’s ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’(a UK No.14 hit) right through until late 83’s ‘Somethin’s Goin’ On’, this 29 track release has all of Ian’s 45’s including many versions that were specially edited from LP length.

The sadly missed Mick Ronson plays on a good few of the tracks and other contributions come from the likes of Queen, members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band including Clarence Clemons, John Cale of Velvet Underground and The Clash’s Mick Jones.

The song ‘Ships’ later gave (of all people) Barry Manilow a USA Top 10 hit whilst ‘Once Bitten Twice Shy’ was taken into the American Top 5 by Great White.

Egg
This now legendary debut album by Egg featured the talents of Dave Stewart on Keyboards, Mont Campbell on Bass and Clive Brooks on Drums. Egg were associated with the so-called 'Canterbury' style of rock music pioneered by artists such as Caravan and Soft Machine. The trio produced music of startling originality and energy, drawing on influences ranging from rock to jazz to psychedelia to classical. This fusion resulted in one of the most enduring releases to appear on Decca's short lived Nova imprint and is now critically regarded as one of the more unique albums of the early 1970's. Re-mastered from the original tapes, the Esoteric Recordings reissue includes three bonus tracks, including both sides of the bands only single and 'Movement 3' from the albums notorious opus 'Symphony No. 2', now restored in its rightful place in this extended composition. Arena
Released in March 1971, 'Arena' was the second and final album by the group Marsupilami. Initially a folk-based group the band evolved into one of the most adventurous, if unsung, bands of the early 1970's, producing two stunningly original Mellotron soaked albums. Featuring a line-up of brothers Fred and Leary Hasson (lead vocals and harmonica and keyboards respectively), Dave Laverock (guitar), Richard Lathan Hicks (bass), Jessica Stanley Clarke (flute, vocals) and Mike Fouracre (drums), Marsupilami drew early comparisons to such contemporaries as Quintessence and Gryphon, although in truth the group were far more experimental and powerful. Produced by Peter Bardens (soon to form CAMEL), the CD release of 'Arena' will be welcomed by the legions of progressive rock afficianados. With this 24-bit remastered edition from ESOTERIC RECORDINGS, the conceptual 'Arena' has never sounded better.

Ginger Bakers Airforce
Ginger Baker is without doubt one of the most famous Rock Drummers ever - forming and playing in the worlds first super group "Cream" with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. This is Ginger's first official release since 1994 when he released BBM-Baker Bruce and Gary Moore. This Airforce album was originally released in 1970 a year after the demise of Cream. Chapters And Phases : The Complete Albums 1973 – 1975
Released on 28/09/09 . Lagos-based trio BLO shook the Nigerian scene to its foundations with their their Afro-rooted rock music. Their live debut in December 1972 found 10,000 new converts chanting we want BLO over and over again. Their Afro-delia looked far afield for inspiration: drummer Laolu Akintobi said we were listening to Grand Funk Railroad and The Isley Brothers and thought we should be able to do this in an African way. A further inspiration wasGinger Baker for whom both Akintobi and BLO sBerkley Jones played and toured with in 1971.

BLO’s first two albums, 1973’sChapter One and 1975’sPhase 2, are amazing fusions of traditional rhythms and American psychedelia that evoke a spacier Tago Mago -era Can. Original copies of each sell for £200 and up. Chapter One’shighlights include the psychedelic instrumental Miss Sagit with its snakey fuzz guitar. Equally far out is Chant To Mother Earth, where a hypnotic three-note bass line tops shuffling drums, choppy guitar and distant chanted vocals. Phase 2’swah wah guitar and funk takes their Afro-delia onto the dance floor. Press reports of the time describe BLO as Africa’s first rock band. They had an electronic cosmic sound that deserves total world-wide attention

Eat it
For fans of bluesy, hard-charging boogie rock, the legendary band Humble Pie is an icon. Current artists such as the Black Crowes invoke its name and that of its leader Steve Marriott with nothing less than reverence. That Humble Pie was co-founded by Peter Frampton, enjoying a notable renaissance of late, provides even greater impetus for these new reissues of the bands classic albums
In 1969, Marriott, who had left Small Faces, and Frampton, formerly of the Herd, joined with ex-Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley. Humble Pie's first single, ‘Natural Born Woman’ (aka ‘Natural Born Boogie’) hit the U.K. Top 10 and led to its debut album, As Safe As Yesterday Is. Humble Pie live, however, was explosive, loud and raucous. Frampton left after the tour, replaced by Dave "Clem" Clempson, A year later, Humble Pie disbanded. Marriott and Shirley briefly reformed the group in the '80s but accidents and ill health plagued Marriott and the band.
The album titleEat Itmeans "Dig it", Each side of the original double album was different: Side 1 featuresSteve Marriott pennedrock and roll; Side 2 has classic R&B covers; Side 3 is a collection of acoustic Steve Marriott songs; finally Side 4 features Humble Pie live in concert.
This album showcases the dynamic diversity and talent of Steve Marriott's gritty bluesy vocals with some funky soul mixed in throughout along with straight ahead blistering rockers. The band is right on and they deliver an extremely energetic powerhouse combination on this double album that overall ranks with their best
